Two fundamental technologies to enter into mainstream information technology are Big Data and cloud computing. Although these two are not the same; as Big Data represents content, whereas cloud computing is infrastructure, the combination of both technologies can yield excellent results. Cloud computing provides enterprises with a cost-effective & flexible way to access a vast volume of information we call the Big Data. Because of Big Data and cloud computing, it is now much easier to start an IT company than ever before. https://vexxhost.com/blog/big-data-cloud-computing/

Monetizing the Internet of Things: Extracting Value from the Connectivity Opp...Capgemini
Cisco has estimated that the Internet of Things (IoT) has the potential to generate about $19 trillion of value over the coming years. The staggering potential size-of-the-prize has certainly caught the attention of the world’s business community. In a recent survey of senior business leaders around the globe, 96% said their companies would be using IoT in some way within the next 3 years. However, there is a catch – most organizations are yet to derive significant commercial value from IoT. Our research shows that 70% of organizations do not generate service revenues from their IoT solutions. We have looked at why organizations are falling short in monetizing the IoT, and have tried to capture some initial observations on monetization models in what is still a very fast-developing marketplace.

Big data refers to huge set of data which is very common these days due to the increase of internet utilities. Data generated from social media is a very common example for the same. This paper depicts the summary on big data and ways in which it has been utilized in all aspects. Data mining is radically a mode of deriving the indispensable knowledge from extensively vast fractions of data which is quite challenging to be interpreted by conventional methods. The paper mainly focuses on the issues related to the clustering techniques in big data. For the classification purpose of the big data, the existing classification algorithms are concisely acknowledged and after that, k-nearest neighbour algorithm is discreetly chosen among them and described along with an example.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.
Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Storage software use ‘continues to expand’
1. Storage Software Use ‘Continues To Expand’
Facebook.com/storetec
Storetec Services Limited
@StoretecHull www.storetec.net
New data has indicated that a growing number of companies are
making use of data storage, as providers of the software have seen
their revenues rise.
A study by market intelligence firm International Data Corporation (IDC)
revealed that global storage software returns rose 4.1 per cent in
the second quarter of 2013 compared with the previous three
months, to $3.5 billion (£2.2 billion).
2. IDC research director Eric Sheppard commented: "Data protection and
recovery software, and storage and device management software were
the two biggest sources of growth this quarter.
"Once again, organisations continued to invest in storage software that
improves the resiliency and operational efficiencies within their storage
infrastructure."
The study found the storage and device management revenues rose
9.1 per cent to $674 million, while data protection and recovery income
increased by 8.9 per cent year-on-year to $1.3 billion.
3. Such figures indicate that companies across the world are realising the
numerous benefits of using software-based paperless storage
methods, which use up less space, boast the ability to retain data even
in the event of disasters such as floods, fires, hacking and data theft
incidents, and safeguard against the loss of paper documentation or
the destruction of computer hardware.
4. The capacity of organisations to save money in the longer run by
investing in storage software now may be another reason many firms
and public sector bodies are increasingly doing so. The impact on the
bottom line can help firms at a time of ongoing economic weakness
and help them stay lean, efficient and competitive as the financial
climate improves. For government bodies, money saved could help to
ease the strain of austerity.
This latter benefit was listed as a very good reason for Whitehall to go
paperless in a report by the Policy Exchange think tank, published last
week. It said such a move could save £70 billion by 2020, as well as
provide better and more accessible services.
