 Whose woods these are I think I know.
 His house is in the village though;
 He will not see me stopping here
 To watch his woods fill up with snow.
 My little horse must think it queer
 To stop without a farmhouse near
 Between the woods and frozen lake
 The darkest evening of the year.
2
 He gives his harness bells a shake
 To ask if there is some mistake.
 The only other sound’s the sweep
 Of easy wind and downy flake.
 The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
 But I have promises to keep,
 And miles to go before I sleep,
 And miles to go before I sleep
3
 Whose woods these are I think I know.
The poet is trespassing woods. He wonders if
he knows the owner. And he thinks he
knows.
 His house is in the village though;
The owner lives in the village.
4
 He will not see me stopping here
The poet is afraid of trespassing and getting
caught. But he’s sure that there is no chance
here.
 To watch his woods fill up with snow
And he not only trespasses but also will watch
snow pile up on woods.
5
 My little horse must think it queer
The poet is not alone. He has a pony with him.
He cares of his horse and can even read its
mind.
 To stop without a farmhouse near
According to the poet, the horse thinks
stopping here, not going to a farmhouse, is
weird.
6
 Between the woods and frozen lake
Here much details are given. They are by the
side of woods. One side to them is woods
and on the other a frozen lake.
 The darkest evening of the year.
To add more suffering, it’s the darkest evening.
Maybe winter solstice.
7
 He gives his harness bells a shake
The poet can also read symbolic language of
the horse made by its ‘harness bells shake’.
 To ask if there is some mistake.
According to the poet, the horse is asking if
there is anything wrong.
8
 The only other sound’s the sweep
Without the sounds made by the horse, the
only sound is heard is the sound of ‘sweep’.
 Of easy wind and downy flake.
The sound comes from slight wind and soft
snow falling.
9
 The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
The poet is enchanted by the dark and deep
beauty of the wood.
 But I have promises to keep,
He has a desire to stay here, but he has
promised of returning.
10
 And miles to go before I sleep,
 And miles to go before I sleep.
He has to cross a long way to reach his
destination. The repetition of the same line
says so.
11
 The poet is trespassing woods. He knows its
owner who lives in the village and there is no
chance of being caught. He will watch woods
covered with snow.
 His horse thinks it weird. It asks if there is
anything wrong. Because they are at the
side of woods and a frozen lake and it is also
the darkest evening of the year.
12
 On the other hand the poet is enchanted by
the dark and deep beauty of woods and
doesn’t want to leave this silent place.
 But he has to go and has to cross a long way
to reach his destination.
13
 The poem is about isolation.
 The isolated poet takes pleasure in the
nature even though the nature is at its
worse.
