Hi, we are Aaron, Satwant & GregWe are presenting Stop & Search
One of the powers that the police sometimes use to prevent crime in the local community is the power of stop and search. This means that police officers and community support officers can stop you and ask questions about what you're doing in that area. You may be stopped on the street or in your car.The power of stop and search also allows the police to search you if they suspect you might be carrying an illegal substance or something that could be used as a weapon.Source - http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/YoungPeople/CrimeAndJustice/CrimeAndTheLaw/DG_10027690
Stop & Search is a significant issue for people living in our areaPolice carried out 66% more stops and searches under Section 44 of the Terrorism Act in 2008/2009 than the year before, government figures show today.http://www.amateurphotographer.co.uk/news/Police_stop_and_search_rockets_66_news_296962.html210,013138,608.58
Despite or maybe due to this incredible increase, only 6 in every 10,000 stop and searches results in an arrest6in10,000Think about thathttp://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/may/06/police-stop-and-search-reform
This means that 99% of all Stop & Searches affect people who are innocent of anything99%IncredibleHowever less then 1% of searches led to an arrest and only nine arrests were in connection with terrorism.
Imagine how that makes all these people feel:Disempowered – you have no control over what is happening. Your innocent, you cant just walk off.Frustrated – you have no idea what you are allowed to do or notConfused – what now, what are my rights?
