STEREOTYPES IN MUSIC VIDEOS 
Taylor Swift – Shake It Off

AGE 
• In the music video, the representation is that all the 
actors and the singer are in their teens and twenties. 
• This can be interpreted in that youthful people have 
more fun, perhaps over middle aged people or 
pensioners. 
• There was no children in the video, which was 
surprising, as childhood is associated with having fun. 
• There was also a scene where the actors and singer 
rein act a high school cheer (cheerleading), which 
emphasises upon being younger is associating with 
having more fun.
GENDER 
• The song is sung by a female, however the song is not gender 
specific. 
• The song and video do not conform to gender identifies and 
for clothing as well. 
• This is shown as she is wearing a ballerina costume, 
stereotypically feminine, then wearing tracksuit bottoms, chains 
and a snapback, stereotypically masculine.
ETHNICITY 
• The main ethnicity is Caucasian, quite possibly it is to blend 
the actors in to the video. 
• African-American actors is a representation of the cultures in 
Americas demographic. 
• There is not a lot of Asian, Afro-Caribbean and Hispanics, due 
to there low representation in America Media existingly.
SEXUALITY & SOCIAL CLASS 
• Both of these representations are not clearly highlighted or 
shown within the music video. 
• No representation of LGBT, because they do not make up the 
norm and majority in media already. 
• There was a little representation of Social Class within the 
music video, this is because the song is quite general to who its 
social class is.
