DEVELOPED ABILITIES
Interpersonal and Communication Skills:
Through my hands-on approach to any challenge, dealing with customers and my part-time
work experience I was exposed to a range of interpersonal situations. As a result I
developed strong communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to work well within a
team and self-confidence. I have also developed good report writing and presentation skills.
I contribute positively to a group environment and often naturally fill the role of leader. A

large portion of my day to day tasks is to fulfill a mentor role as well as applying my
extensive business and technical knowledge to improve the general business performance.
My current role requires dealing with executives on a regular bases and conveying
information to them in a format that enables better decision making.
I believe in not compromising my values and will always use these values to actively grow
the company I am involved with and to serve customers in the best way possible.
Problem Solving and Analysis:
I enjoy promoting creative ideas in a group situation, and using brainstorming to assist in
problem solving. A developed ability gained through experience to apply my analytic skills to
problem areas with the additional ability to apply technical knowledge in a practical way.
My ability to think through a problem has aided me well in the past and often sets me
above my peers. Technical knowledge can be gained in a class room but the ability
to think is something that you need to learn through experience and by working
through difficult challenges successfully.
Stewardship:
I am a strong believer in doing something right the first time and I actively try to avoid
constant rework of a solution due to bad design and not taking into account possible future
needs into account. I always try to embed a value of leaving something better in any
deliverable than the state I found it in, this knowledge is also shared with team members and
the general business.
Organizational Skills:
Dealing with various different levels of stakeholders from analyst, sales staff and top
management is a skill that I have refined over the last few years. It is sometimes necessary
to question a request received if it doesn’t add business value or due to previous experience
gained can guide the requester onto a better path.
Performance:
The prioritizing of large workloads that add real business value was a skill developed over a
period of time. High yearly ratings reflect my high performance level when compared to my
peers. I have a constant drive and motivation to add as much value possible to any business
area that I engage with.
Technical Skills:
I have expert SQL writing ability in both Oracle and Microsoft SQL with a moderate to high
level of skill in Base SAS 9.1
I am a firm believer of using the web to aid development and problem solving, this has
enabled me reduce development time significantly by not trying to re-invent the wheel with
every solution.

Most recent tools used are Toad for Oracle, MS 2008 SSIS, SSAS and SQL Management
Studio. I have developed a single Qlikview model for Claims reporting but due to time
constraints we have focused more on getting the basic data structures in place before
placing more focus on the displaying of data.
IT Skills:
I am proficient in installing and understanding almost any hardware component in an IT
environment. I also have good knowledge of how hard ware interacts within a business. This
knowledge was gained through personal experience as well as the constant reading of
technical articles.
Leadership Skills:
Mentorship of my team members is a daily task that I have shown great ability in. I am a
natural leader that requires very little motivation and will always see a task through to the
best of my abilities.
Business Understanding:
The management information role places great emphasis in getting to know the business
operations in a company. Through interactions with various business stakeholders I believe
that I can add business value be it in operations, sales or even new product development.
Everything that I touch and do must add business value otherwise resources spent on
unnecessary tasks will be to the detriment of the business in general.
TECHNICAL / BUSINESS KNOWLEDGE
Business / System Issues: Part of my role is to assist as a stop gap solution when system
issues such as non-collection of premiums, low / no sales volumes, incorrect sales allocation
in terms of sales channels are experienced. This is to assist IT with quicker resolution or
business continuity.
System Analysis: Due to age of our main frame systems it is almost impossible to find
documentation regarding system functions or expected results, this very often forces us to
come up with workaround where systems are not fully suited to new products or channels
and to trace system operations down to a column / attribute level.
Business Processes: Recently we have picked up a lot of failing processes in terms of call
centers that forced me to create a very complex solution all the way from sourcing the raw
data from warehouse  analyzing business rules within the team  analyzing results
coming from these rules  adapting the key structures to add additional fields such as date
filters that are more user friendly  creating an SSAS cube from this dimensional structures
 and finally creating an excel based solution that connects to this cube .
The above is probable the most important piece of development I have done in the last 2
years especially in the economic decline after 2009 as a key metric for an insurance
business is to grow more business than what falls off. This set of information will mostly

likely be used all the way to the management director of Absa Life in order to drive business
efficiency and the managing of partners.
Specifications: Generally we follow a chaos theory structure where burning issues are
prioritized and normally with little specification documents available. My current role within
the management information team means I often have to do my own system / business /
needs / testing analysis with our manager overseeing the final products on a high level. In
some sense this is very poor governance but has forced me to work in a changing
environment on my own to a large extent.
Trust: There is enough trust and confidence in my ability to work on my own as my previous
outputs have almost always suited business needs and have always been correct to a 99%
degree.
Knowledge anchor: My ability to understand the business needs with my long term
experience has assisted with all business engagements and to bridge the gap between
technical and soft business needs. I don’t have a technical advisor for the most part and
when there are gaps in my technical knowledge I can find the information I need either
online or through engaging with other areas. Very often the trick is simply knowing what to
search for and breaking down a problem step by step.
Problem Solving: I was taught at very early stage whilst doing warehouse ETL development
that the solution is often the simplest and not the most elegant solution and that you need to
deep dive into individual data records in order to identify why records counts are lower than
expected or where duplicates come from.
Architecture: After completing my Togaf certification my mindset changed to develop
solutions that are easily scaled or changed for various purposes. I started developing central
lookups that combines different systems with different products and processes into single
usage datasets. The challenge very often is to combine systems of varying granularity into
cohesive single datasets that can be used across the board for varying purposes. One
example is to facilitate migrations from one system to another to appear seam less for users
by developing an architecture that supported this.
Technologies:
Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB) – This was the starting tool in my career when I
developed warehouse tables
Oracle Workflow Manager – Use to schedule OWB jobs
Main Frame – I can find my way around AIX with some internet help and have in the past
uploaded files manually and via scheduled crontab jobs
Toad for Oracle – This is my life force to interrogate our Oracle Databases
SAS – Oracle queries created in Toad was used in SAS as SAS was our local ETL tool
Excel 2007 / 2010 – Pivot tables, Macro’s Etc. , more recently connecting to cubes and using
a single Absa Life template to keep looks uniform.

SSIS – We have moved 90% of our SAS jobs to SSIS and have a good working knowledge
in creating SSIS packages.
SSAS – Using SSIS package created dimensional structures and fact tables I have built on
my own our Fall Cube with very little assistance, previously I have updated external
contractor created cubes and have been through some of the pains such as 2008 R2 limited
hierarchy assistance. I am looking forward to the next version where MDX will not be used
anymore as Microsoft have developed a very powerful tool that is extremely difficult to use
within certain functions.
CA Erwin – Due to fact that we are not an architecturally / governance strong department my
toolsets available in terms of creating actual data structures is limited to Visio and excel I
have lost out on the opportunity to use formal data modeling toolsets such as the ones IBM
provides however the toolset is only a tool or 1% of the work, thinking behind creating data
structures is the important part and when I understand the needs of a client I can develop a
80% solution with the additional 20% following during testing phase.
During a business analyst course I proved to be the only team member that had the ability to
create an entity relationship diagram of about 70 objects.
SQL: I am an expert in all aspect SQL and have had the opportunity to create SQL in SAS,
Oracle, and T-SQL (SSIS). I have received a bronze prestige team award for the work we
did in creating almost 90 complex queries used to measure business performance right
across Absa based on specifications. I have a unique ability to persevere and to get data
outputs correct in terms of record counts, not losing records along the way, checking results,
unique joins, I have completed many queries where other developers have given up or
created poorly performing code.
I have touched many technologies from my start in pure IT in Gijima Ast where I had to
develop boot images that were used to update on an enterprise level IBM desktops for our
NT2XP projects.
Ghost imaging as part of our UAT server labs (physical and virtual)
I don’t believe you can be a good project manager / IS developer / analyst if you have not
crawled through IT all the way through to delivering rich, useable solutions for all levels off
business.
Please ask me specific questions if I need to demonstrate technical ability in any specific
area or toolset.

  • 2. Stephan J Roos 114 Barkston Drive, Blairgowrie, Randburg, Johannesburg, South Africa 082 560 1741 [m] stephanroosmail@gmail.com 2 large portion of my day to day tasks is to fulfill a mentor role as well as applying my extensive business and technical knowledge to improve the general business performance. My current role requires dealing with executives on a regular bases and conveying information to them in a format that enables better decision making. I believe in not compromising my values and will always use these values to actively grow the company I am involved with and to serve customers in the best way possible. Problem Solving and Analysis: I enjoy promoting creative ideas in a group situation, and using brainstorming to assist in problem solving. A developed ability gained through experience to apply my analytic skills to problem areas with the additional ability to apply technical knowledge in a practical way. My ability to think through a problem has aided me well in the past and often sets me above my peers. Technical knowledge can be gained in a class room but the ability to think is something that you need to learn through experience and by working through difficult challenges successfully. Stewardship: I am a strong believer in doing something right the first time and I actively try to avoid constant rework of a solution due to bad design and not taking into account possible future needs into account. I always try to embed a value of leaving something better in any deliverable than the state I found it in, this knowledge is also shared with team members and the general business. Organizational Skills: Dealing with various different levels of stakeholders from analyst, sales staff and top management is a skill that I have refined over the last few years. It is sometimes necessary to question a request received if it doesn’t add business value or due to previous experience gained can guide the requester onto a better path. Performance: The prioritizing of large workloads that add real business value was a skill developed over a period of time. High yearly ratings reflect my high performance level when compared to my peers. I have a constant drive and motivation to add as much value possible to any business area that I engage with. Technical Skills: I have expert SQL writing ability in both Oracle and Microsoft SQL with a moderate to high level of skill in Base SAS 9.1 I am a firm believer of using the web to aid development and problem solving, this has enabled me reduce development time significantly by not trying to re-invent the wheel with every solution.
  • 3. Stephan J Roos 114 Barkston Drive, Blairgowrie, Randburg, Johannesburg, South Africa 082 560 1741 [m] stephanroosmail@gmail.com 3 Most recent tools used are Toad for Oracle, MS 2008 SSIS, SSAS and SQL Management Studio. I have developed a single Qlikview model for Claims reporting but due to time constraints we have focused more on getting the basic data structures in place before placing more focus on the displaying of data. IT Skills: I am proficient in installing and understanding almost any hardware component in an IT environment. I also have good knowledge of how hard ware interacts within a business. This knowledge was gained through personal experience as well as the constant reading of technical articles. Leadership Skills: Mentorship of my team members is a daily task that I have shown great ability in. I am a natural leader that requires very little motivation and will always see a task through to the best of my abilities. Business Understanding: The management information role places great emphasis in getting to know the business operations in a company. Through interactions with various business stakeholders I believe that I can add business value be it in operations, sales or even new product development. Everything that I touch and do must add business value otherwise resources spent on unnecessary tasks will be to the detriment of the business in general. TECHNICAL / BUSINESS KNOWLEDGE Business / System Issues: Part of my role is to assist as a stop gap solution when system issues such as non-collection of premiums, low / no sales volumes, incorrect sales allocation in terms of sales channels are experienced. This is to assist IT with quicker resolution or business continuity. System Analysis: Due to age of our main frame systems it is almost impossible to find documentation regarding system functions or expected results, this very often forces us to come up with workaround where systems are not fully suited to new products or channels and to trace system operations down to a column / attribute level. Business Processes: Recently we have picked up a lot of failing processes in terms of call centers that forced me to create a very complex solution all the way from sourcing the raw data from warehouse  analyzing business rules within the team  analyzing results coming from these rules  adapting the key structures to add additional fields such as date filters that are more user friendly  creating an SSAS cube from this dimensional structures  and finally creating an excel based solution that connects to this cube . The above is probable the most important piece of development I have done in the last 2 years especially in the economic decline after 2009 as a key metric for an insurance business is to grow more business than what falls off. This set of information will mostly
  • 4. Stephan J Roos 114 Barkston Drive, Blairgowrie, Randburg, Johannesburg, South Africa 082 560 1741 [m] stephanroosmail@gmail.com 4 likely be used all the way to the management director of Absa Life in order to drive business efficiency and the managing of partners. Specifications: Generally we follow a chaos theory structure where burning issues are prioritized and normally with little specification documents available. My current role within the management information team means I often have to do my own system / business / needs / testing analysis with our manager overseeing the final products on a high level. In some sense this is very poor governance but has forced me to work in a changing environment on my own to a large extent. Trust: There is enough trust and confidence in my ability to work on my own as my previous outputs have almost always suited business needs and have always been correct to a 99% degree. Knowledge anchor: My ability to understand the business needs with my long term experience has assisted with all business engagements and to bridge the gap between technical and soft business needs. I don’t have a technical advisor for the most part and when there are gaps in my technical knowledge I can find the information I need either online or through engaging with other areas. Very often the trick is simply knowing what to search for and breaking down a problem step by step. Problem Solving: I was taught at very early stage whilst doing warehouse ETL development that the solution is often the simplest and not the most elegant solution and that you need to deep dive into individual data records in order to identify why records counts are lower than expected or where duplicates come from. Architecture: After completing my Togaf certification my mindset changed to develop solutions that are easily scaled or changed for various purposes. I started developing central lookups that combines different systems with different products and processes into single usage datasets. The challenge very often is to combine systems of varying granularity into cohesive single datasets that can be used across the board for varying purposes. One example is to facilitate migrations from one system to another to appear seam less for users by developing an architecture that supported this. Technologies: Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB) – This was the starting tool in my career when I developed warehouse tables Oracle Workflow Manager – Use to schedule OWB jobs Main Frame – I can find my way around AIX with some internet help and have in the past uploaded files manually and via scheduled crontab jobs Toad for Oracle – This is my life force to interrogate our Oracle Databases SAS – Oracle queries created in Toad was used in SAS as SAS was our local ETL tool Excel 2007 / 2010 – Pivot tables, Macro’s Etc. , more recently connecting to cubes and using a single Absa Life template to keep looks uniform.
  • 5. Stephan J Roos 114 Barkston Drive, Blairgowrie, Randburg, Johannesburg, South Africa 082 560 1741 [m] stephanroosmail@gmail.com 5 SSIS – We have moved 90% of our SAS jobs to SSIS and have a good working knowledge in creating SSIS packages. SSAS – Using SSIS package created dimensional structures and fact tables I have built on my own our Fall Cube with very little assistance, previously I have updated external contractor created cubes and have been through some of the pains such as 2008 R2 limited hierarchy assistance. I am looking forward to the next version where MDX will not be used anymore as Microsoft have developed a very powerful tool that is extremely difficult to use within certain functions. CA Erwin – Due to fact that we are not an architecturally / governance strong department my toolsets available in terms of creating actual data structures is limited to Visio and excel I have lost out on the opportunity to use formal data modeling toolsets such as the ones IBM provides however the toolset is only a tool or 1% of the work, thinking behind creating data structures is the important part and when I understand the needs of a client I can develop a 80% solution with the additional 20% following during testing phase. During a business analyst course I proved to be the only team member that had the ability to create an entity relationship diagram of about 70 objects. SQL: I am an expert in all aspect SQL and have had the opportunity to create SQL in SAS, Oracle, and T-SQL (SSIS). I have received a bronze prestige team award for the work we did in creating almost 90 complex queries used to measure business performance right across Absa based on specifications. I have a unique ability to persevere and to get data outputs correct in terms of record counts, not losing records along the way, checking results, unique joins, I have completed many queries where other developers have given up or created poorly performing code. I have touched many technologies from my start in pure IT in Gijima Ast where I had to develop boot images that were used to update on an enterprise level IBM desktops for our NT2XP projects. Ghost imaging as part of our UAT server labs (physical and virtual) I don’t believe you can be a good project manager / IS developer / analyst if you have not crawled through IT all the way through to delivering rich, useable solutions for all levels off business. Please ask me specific questions if I need to demonstrate technical ability in any specific area or toolset.
