Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that can differentiate into specialized cell types and can divide to produce more stem cells. There are two main types: embryonic stem cells which are pluripotent and can become any cell type, and adult stem cells which are multipotent and can differentiate into a limited number of cell types. Stem cells are used in tissue engineering where they are seeded onto scaffolds and stimulated to differentiate and produce new tissue to repair damage.
