Sri Lanka's biotechnology industry generated $782 million in revenue in 2013, with $560 million from exports. The industry was comprised of 39 companies employing 302 people, 30% of whom held graduate degrees. The agro-biotech sector accounted for $664 million in revenue. Key challenges facing the industry included human resource development and infrastructure. While Sri Lanka had 575 biotechnologists in 2014, it lacked sufficient innovation infrastructure connecting universities, research institutions and industry. The government had invested $217.7 million between 2010-2014 in biotechnology R&D and established a National Biotechnology Council to direct the industry's development.
