Standardized testing measures large groups of people in a uniform way to eliminate human grading bias. While proponents argue it provides equal opportunities and useful information at low cost, preparing students for college, critics say it encourages "teaching to the test" and measures a narrow range of skills. Statistics show 93% of studies found positive effects on achievement but 44% of districts reduced time for other subjects to focus on reading and math tested by standardized exams.

Amid claims that enriched post-secondary programs for high-ability students are either unnecessary or that they perpetuate elitist attitudes and social chasms, institutions of higher education grapple with issues regarding the recruitment, retention, and cultivating optimal learning environments for high-ability students. With current economic and funding trends in higher education, these issues need to be revisited. Although there have been quantitative studies to determine the effect of participation in honors programs, much of the literature is dated and current trends need to be considered.
Differences in mean level cumulative GPA were measured between two groups of students who were eligible to participate in a post-secondary honors program. One group chose to opt out of this learning experience while the other group chose to participate. A longitudinal research design was conducted and archival data was collected and analyzed to determine if those who participate in a post-secondary honors program experience a penalty in terms of lower cumulative GPA. The present study sought to determine the extent to which participation in a post-secondary honors program affected academic achievement. Archival data were collected on three cohorts of high-achieving students at a large, public university. Propensity scores were calculated
on factors predicting participation in honors and used as t
he covariate. The Johnson-Neyman technique was used to determine the values of the covariate on which the groups differed. The effect of participating in honors was greater for smaller covariate values. The findings offer a
positive outcome associated with participation for students at the lower end of the propensity score continuum, providing evidence to conclude that such programs are beneficial to a sub-set of high-achieving students.Test anxiety gender and academic achievements
Objectives: To investigate undergraduate students’ test anxiety level; to measure
the correlation between undergraduate students test anxiety with their
academic achievement; and to measure the correlation of undergraduate students’
test anxiety from the perspective of their gender.
Methodology: Students of eight departments at University of Swat constituted
the study sample. Among these, 126 undergraduate level students were selected
through simple random sampling technique. The tool used for the study was
Westwide Test Anxiety Scale. Analysis of data was done using SPSS version 21.
Results: Among the selected respondents, there were 89 (70.63%) male and
37 (29.37%) female students. Our results revealed that 39.7% of undergraduate
university students were suffering from moderately high test anxiety. Male students
had 44.9% while female students had 27% moderately high test anxiety.
The correlation coefficient between CGPA and test anxiety of students was -.317
which shows inverse relationship. The average CGPA of male students was 2.8
while female students had a CGPA of 3.19. The mean test score of male undergraduate
students was 3.25 ±0.60 and female under graduate students was
3.13 ±0.77, p value .366.
Conclusion: Moderately high test anxiety was found in undergraduate university
students which was similar in both male and female students. Female students
showed better performance as compared to male students.

Over a two year period, students taking developmental English and math courses were asked to rate topics on student success. The highest rated topics overall were managing time, critical thinking, and test preparation. Math students rated topics on critical thinking and test preparation most useful, while English students rated time management, goals, and navigating the online system as most useful. A successful program integrated additional class time and individual support for underprepared students, increasing the percentage completing college-level courses in two years from 20% to 38% in math and from 46% to 67% in English.

Objectives: To investigate undergraduate students’ test anxiety level; to measure
the correlation between undergraduate students test anxiety with their
academic achievement; and to measure the correlation of undergraduate students’
test anxiety from the perspective of their gender.
Methodology: Students of eight departments at University of Swat constituted
the study sample. Among these, 126 undergraduate level students were selected
through simple random sampling technique. The tool used for the study was
Westwide Test Anxiety Scale. Analysis of data was done using SPSS version 21.
Results: Among the selected respondents, there were 89 (70.63%) male and
37 (29.37%) female students. Our results revealed that 39.7% of undergraduate
university students were suffering from moderately high test anxiety. Male students
had 44.9% while female students had 27% moderately high test anxiety.
The correlation coefficient between CGPA and test anxiety of students was -.317
which shows inverse relationship. The average CGPA of male students was 2.8
while female students had a CGPA of 3.19. The mean test score of male undergraduate
students was 3.25 ±0.60 and female under graduate students was
3.13 ±0.77, p value .366.
Conclusion: Moderately high test anxiety was found in undergraduate university
students which was similar in both male and female students. Female students
showed better performance as compared to male students.

Standardized Testing
Standardized tests can be defined as any form of test that is administered and “scored in a standard and consistent manner”, that makes it possible to compare the performance of individual and group of students. Standardized testing was first used in China to select candidates for the province bureaucracy. The UK adopted this form of testing in the early 19th century, and it spread from the UK to Europe and then America. Its spread was fueled by the industrial revolution.
Standardized testing involves different types of testing. Some of the most common are “aptitude tests”, “achievement tests”, “college-admission tests”, “international comparison tests”, and “psychological tests”. Achievement test is a type of tests that is intended to assess the knowledge and skills that students have learned in school and determine their academic progress. They can also be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the instructors and the schools. (Education Glossary, 2015).
There have been debates about standardized testing. Some are against the system while others are for the system. Standardized testing is responsible for narrowing of the education standard and curriculum. It reduces the growth of the students and does not focus on the social sciences, arts and talents of the students and thus it is a major killer of the student’s educational growth in terms of arts and social sciences. This does not help the student develop as an individual as much effort is put into passing the tests rather than build character of an individual. In this paper, we will look into the advantages and disadvantages of standardized tests.
Pro and Cons of Standardized Tests
The debate on the standardized tests ranges on several key issues. Some of these issues of contention are: firstly, the numerical scores on a standardized testing accurate, objective and useful evidence of performance? Secondly, are the standardized tests fair to all students? The other one is the use of standardized tests providing valuable information to improve instructional quality? Then do the advantages of standardized testing outweigh the costs or time spent in taking the tests? Lastly, do standardized tests focus too narrowly on few academic subjects?
The benefit of the standardized tests is that the tests are reliable and objective measures of student achievement. Policymakers use the test to determine whether the laws and policies are working or not and to compare educational performance within the state. Multiple-choice tests are graded by machine, and thus, they are not subject to bias or subjectivity. Also, standardized tests are inclusive because their content is equal for all students. Using alternate tests for the minorities would be unfair and alienating them, according to former Washington DC, schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee.
