The Stamp Act Congress met in response to the Stamp Act imposed by the British Parliament which taxed printed materials in the American colonies to help pay for the Seven Years' War. Delegates from 9 of the 13 colonies attended to decide how to respond, resulting in widespread boycotts among colonists and encouraging unity and cooperation between the different colonies, representing an important step towards realizing independence.
