2. First stage
I started off with the picture of James from the photo
shoot and added a white background to it to give the
effect that a professional photo shoot had taken
place.
At this stage I started thinking about the size of the
picture, so I could figure out where I’d want my
masthead, coverlines, sub stories and puffs to go and
how big I’d want them.
3. Second stage
I decided that I’d want my masthead really big to
catch peoples attention, also the colours that are
associated with pop music are normally baby
blue and baby pink, so I tried to incorporate those
colours in my masthead.
I also flipped the picture the other way so that I
could have my sub stories on the left hand side of
the cover to follow up with the Z read technique.
4. Third stage
I then decided to change the ‘pop’ in my masthead
to a yellow that would be close the colour of
James’ hair to show that this issue is relating to
him.
Also, after trying out text on a white background, I
realized that a white background would not work as
the text wouldn’t stand out as much as I wanted it
to, so I changed it to a dark blue background.
I added in a red puff to grab peoples attention
giving them a quote from the article included in the
magazine to draw the audience into buying the
magazine. Another thing I did was add a banner at
the top of the page, I did this because there was an
empty space and figured I could maybe advertise
some free things in the magazine to again draw the
audience in.
5. Fourth stage
So, then I advertised some free things included
in the magazine from idols of pop, putting white
and black text on a red background so it would
stand out.
I didn’t like how plain the masthead was so I
added a purple box with white outline and put the
masthead in that box written in white with
squares beneath it, so it almost looks like a
cinema reel. James is also overlapping the
masthead a little bit which shows that he is more
important and bigger than this.
I again changed the background as the dark blue
was a bit too bright and hurt to look at, so I
chose a more docile colour.
6. Fifth stage
Finally nearly finished, I needed to add in my sub
stories now, I looked through lots of pop magazines on
the internet such as ‘TOP OF THE POPS’ and saw
that they always advertise free posters in their
magazines, so through my photo shoot with Auguste, I
chose a photo using my audience feedback, to use as
a free poster in my magazine and put it in the same
style box that I used for my masthead.
Again, using the same style box, I put a sub story in
about fashion, in many pop magazines they include
fashion tips and trends as it’s aimed at a young
teenage girl audience. I did the same thing at the
bottom of my front cover using an idol to lure them in.
Added in the final touches such as a barcode, date,
issue number and price. Still needs some editing but
this is the main outline of my front cover.
