This book by Ansel Adams is a big inspiration to my FMP as I've
read his books and they are made to be very informative so
people can learn as much as they can from them and do their
best work in photography.
I would like to follow the same principles and make my project
as detailed as possible so that its helpful but not overwhelming
for the reader and that they can take out some useful
information.
In terms of the physical design of the book the style is really
simplified with just the single image and small texts which
makes you focus on the important parts which is the name of
the book, then the image, and then the order which is part
one of 3 this is purposeful to not overload the reader and
makes the front cover look clean and nice
The inside of the book is a plethora of images and
information made to cover everything the reader could
imagine about the subject of photography which I would
like to do but on not as a detailed scale as my book isn’t
meant to be as detailed and discuss everything there is to
know its more of a relaxed version this is so the reader isn’t
put off when they turn a page and see so much text.
I think as a photographer the use of simplicity is used well on the front cover as its
eye catching in a way as people tend to overlook covers that are crammed and
this simple image with text fits the tone of the book perfectly once you’ve had a
read which id like to mimic in my own designs
3. Existing Product
This product is a photography zine by a
photographer named George Muncey whose brand
is negative feedback the zine itself is a collection of
British film photos taken by film photographers all
around the UK its all about showing off the work
people have made to get film and classic
photography back on the map and it is designed in
such a way that it entices people wit and interest in
photography to want to have a look.
The main reason I would say its so enticing to
viewers is how many different artists it shows off as
your more than likely to find at least one or two
photographers work that you like.
From a deign standpoint its again like my previous
product very simple on the front page where the
majority is taken up by a main image and the name
of the book which in this case I believe is meant to
not make you focus to much on what its about but
makes you want to pick it up and look yourself.
The majority of the book is colour photos and the front cover does a good job of fitting in with this by
making it a white border with a super colourful image that really stands out in the middle with a bright
pink font for the title, this does a great job of catching the viewers eye
4. Existing Product
This is a photobook by a man named Mike
Goldwater and is a photobook of
moments he captured on the London
underground from 1970 to 1980 this is
more of a photobook than I want my
project to be but it has a lot of ideas and
designs I would like to use on my own
book. For a start the design itself again is
nice and simple with not an overload of
text, most pages are just and image a
place and date but the way the images
are placed on the pages are a big
inspiration to how id like to format my
pages. Its also I completely black and
white image book which I think would be
a nice idea for my own to keep a theme.
The audience appeal is really well done with the
front image as its one of the best from the book
placed visible for anyone to walk past and since
it’s a good image lots of sales of the book were
probably due to someone liking that image and
opening the book to find some more
5. Existing Product
This book is another photobook by a
photographer and documenter called Nicholas JR
white who made this book documenting a
collection of buildings in the UK landscapes called
bothies for walkers to stay in on long hikes.
This book is a good inspiration for the images ill be
putting in my book and making a reason why I'm
choosing the images as I feel the photos I put in
shouldn’t just be random they need to correlate
well with my subject.
The design of this book is a big inspiration as the
use of dark colours on the cover and in the pages
is really nice its almost like there's a dark tone set
over the whole book but still manages to have
colour id like to follow a similar design with my
book especially with the type of images.
The front cover is another simple design which
seems to be a common theme with photography
books which is good because it gives me lots of
ideas for how to come up with an original design
but making sure I keep it related to similar books
6. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products
have?
• Almost all of the products I have researched use simplicity in their
books whether it be on the design of the front page or on the pages
of the actual book inside, this is helpful as I wanted to have a simple
style and being able to look at these for inspiration will help a lot
• What aspects of the research will you include within
your on work?
I will be using the simple designs and dark colour schemes for my work as I
picked out similar products to help me get ideas that suit my style and the
ones I've selected will contribute into the final product hopefully as I've
envisioned

12. Interview 1
• Question 1: if you were to get into classic photography would a book be an appealing
way of getting information or would other products be better for you like a website or a
video?.
• Answer: I think a book is better for fitting more detailed information but a video is more
for quick facts so I would rather the book.
• Question 2: if you were to purchase a book about classic photography as a learner
would you prefer extensive detail or lots of small different sections of information to
digest at a time?.
• Answer: I think it would be too much to read if the book was just pages and pages of
information so I like a good mix of facts and images to go with the writing
• Question 3 : as an outsider would you say the public is well informed on classic
photography or would you say its left the old methods behind for new modern
technology?
• Answer: I had heard about people using older cameras before but it definitely seems to
be becoming a much more popular type of art now than it was a few years ago
especially with the rise of social media to show off peoples images so id say there's still
a good mix of modern and old-fashioned.
Some questions for a friend who only knows of classic
photography to see how much they know from the media
13. Interview 1
• Observation
• : I think my 1st interview shows that the younger generation
definitely don’t know much about the classic methods of
photography, I base this down to the age gap from when digital
cameras were made.
• What this says about my audience:
• this shows that the audience would be interested to learn about it
and that a book is a good way of getting information out in a more
detailed way than just a online video.
• How will your product appeal to this audience:
• I will try to appeal to my audience by keeping my designs fresh and
interesting with lots of pleasing designs and not too heavy on the
unnecessary information otherwise people get bored or confused
14. Interview 2
• Question 1: if you were to get into classic photography would a book be an appealing way of
getting information or would other products be better for you like a website or a video?.
• Answer: well I think for someone of my age a book is defiantly the best way but if you were to
market it to a younger generation then they would be more interested in a video as that’s
how a lot of people take in information now
• Question 2: if you were to purchase a book about classic photography as a learner would you
prefer extensive detail or lots of small different sections of information to digest at a time?.
• Answer: I think if you’re a beginner than lots of relevant information in small chunks is a much
better way to learn and having a practical side to that learning is helpful to.
• Question 3 : as an outsider would you say the public is well informed on classic photography
or would you say its left the old methods behind for new modern technology?
• Answer: well as the people over the age of 30 at least grew up with classic cameras before
digital ones came around there's still a big amount of people informed on how to use them its
just the younger people that would need informing on how it all works or even the older
people that may have not used a camera before.
I used the same set of questions on an adult who had
grown up with the older method of photography
15. Interview 2
• Observation:
• with this interview it shows that the majority of older people will
probably know at least a little bit on how the functioning of a classic film
camera works but that a lot of them haven’t kept up with it since the rise
of digital cameras
• What this says about my audience:
• This says that there's still an interest in the older generation but not all of
them will have used a camera and may need the information as much as
the younger people
• How will your product appeal to this audience:
• My product will appeal to the older audience because older people tend
to digest information through older methods like books and articles
whereas the new younger generation tend to get all theirs from their
phones or social media

Above is all the media I researched while looking for inspiration there is
one book I didn’t include in my slides but is one I've read before which is
additional research but felt it wasn’t worth making a slide dedicated to it
as it wasn’t as informative as id like
