 Training means imparting 
skills and knowledge for 
doing a particular job. 
 DEPTH OF 
KNOWLEDGE AND 
SKILLS 
 It imparts job related 
technical skills. Training 
revolves around the job 
only. 
 Development means the 
growth of an employee in 
all respects. 
 It involves all round 
knowledge of present and 
future jobs. It shapes 
attitudes and imparts 
technical, human and 
conceptual skills.
ON THE BASIS OF 
 PURPOSE 
 Training is concerned 
with maintaining and 
improving current job 
performance. 
 Executive development 
seeks to develop 
competence and skills 
for future performance.

centered in nature. it seeks 
to prepare the employees 
for handling higher level 
jobs. 
 It is based more on off-the-job 
methods such as 
lectures, conference, 
sensitivity , training, etc.
ON THE BASIS OF 
 INITIATIVE 
 The boss takes initiative 
for imparting training to 
his subordinates. The 
role of the boss or trainer 
is very important in 
training. 
 The individual takes the 
initiative for self growth 
and development. The 
executive has to be 
internally motivated for 
self development.
ON THE BASIS OF 
 DURATION 
 Training programmes are 
organized for short-terms. 
 Development takes place 
over a larger period of 
time.
