Minneapolis-St. Paul unemployment gained 60 basis points and fell four spots nationally into an eight place tie with the Indianapolis metro. New workforce highs were achieved in Professional and Business Services and Other Services while Education and Health services saw a slight pullback from its recent run in growth. Y-O-Y Education and Health Services maintained the top spot creating 13,000 jobs over the trailing 12 month period. In contrast, the Leisure and Hospitality sector lost 5,300 jobs in 2016.
Among office using sectors, all have seen a month-to-month contraction in growth except Professional and Business Services which has finished 2016 net positive 12,700 jobs.
Nationwide, unemployment rose for the second consecutive month and now sits at 4.8 percent, boosted by an increase in the labor force participation rate to 62.9 percent. However, the expansion of the civilian labor force is not keeping up with job growth, which will keep slack minimal in the near-term.
Wage growth continues but at a slower pace than December.

According to the most recent BLS estimates, Minneapolis-St. Paul’s unemployment has ticked up from last month’s 3.1%, yet still sits comfortably below the 4 percent mark. Having the second-lowest unemployment rate in the nation among all large metros offers its own challenges as employers prepare for a potentially looming talent shortage.
Once again, MSP achieved record-breaking employment totals for professional and business services, a fundamental component to the metro’s economic growth. Approximately 6,000 jobs have been added in the industry year-over-year.
The U.S. economy saw the addition of 255,000 net new jobs in July, the second consecutive month of healthy additions after a volatile first quarter and next to no growth in May.
Nationally, average weekly wages continue to rise at an annual clip of 2.6 percent, more than double inflation at 1.0 percent. This will boost disposable income and, in turn, personal consumption that drives GDP.
The number of law firms and the total headcount of lawyers both have failed to keep pace with the growth observed in other professional and business service sectors, the majority of which have sharply rebounded in the wake of the recession. We suggest several reasons why the headcount of lawyers has stagnated over the past several years, and submit that the square footage currently occupied by law firms is likely to continue to decline over the next several years, though perhaps at a slower pace than has been the case recently.
Columbus MSA employment was up 8,200 (0.8 percent) from March to June, ahead of Ohio’s increase of 0.4 percent and the U.S. increase of 0.6 percent, according to the Q2 economic update report produced by Columbus 2020. Going into the second half of the year, unemployment in the Columbus Region continued to decline at 4.6 percent, compared to June state and national rates of 5.5 and 6.1, respectively.

Jobs growth among industrial employment sectors in Cleveland has been trending up in recent months, recording an annualized net gain of 5,700 jobs across the metro. Employment gains were led by the mining, logging and construction sector, which added 5,900 jobs year-over-year.

Office-using employment sectors have experienced sustained employment expansion over the last year, recording an annualized net gain of 3,100 jobs across the metro. Employment gains were led by the professional and business services sector, which added 1,500 jobs year-over-year.
After a slow March—whose monthly employment growth was revised down to just 85,000 jobs—the U.S. economy rebounded with 223,000 net new jobs in April.
Even with a 10-basis-point increase in labor force participation due to 58,000 new entrants to the workforce, unemployment dropped to 5.4 percent, the lowest rate seen during the recovery so far.
The Columbus metro continued its steady expansion by recently adding 15,200 payrolls, year-over-year, bringing total non-farm employment to 1.02 million. Meanwhile, unemployment fell 60 basis points year-over-year to 3.8 percent.
Non-farm employment across the Baltimore metro area totaled nearly 1.4 million, which is up 2.5 percent compared to the previous year and 4.4 percent higher than the previous cyclical peak reached in late 2007.

Leasing activity signals future gains. More than 250,000 square feet of expansions were signed this quarter, with most commencing in the next six months.
Last year, passenger traffic at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport (STL) rose for the first time since 2012. With over 12.7 million people flying through, it was the most active year for the airport since 2008. Increased passenger volume was the largest since 2006. The summer months are the most active with an average of more than 1.1 million passengers May through August.
