 Put off the Old, vv 8-9
 Put on the New, vv 10-11

4.  Put on a heart for others, v 12
 Put on a heart of forgiveness, v 13
 Put on a heart of love, v 14

5.  So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and
beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness,
humility, gentleness and patience; Colossians 3:12
 Therefore, since you are the elect of God, and since you
have been set apart, and since you are loved of God…
 ἐκλεκτοι: those who have believed, foreknown of God,
predestined to holiness
 Holy: ἁγιοι hagioi: set apart, Ephesians 1:4, Rom 8:29
 Beloved: ἀγαπαω agapaō: perfect tense Rom 5:8, 1 Jn 4:9-11
 Because of the perfect position you have in Christ, put on
the new man.

6.  So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and
beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness,
humility, gentleness and patience; Colossians 3:12
 Put on, ἐνδυσασθε aorist, middle, imperative
 Aorist imperative implies priority, a command that is
expected to be completed.
 Therefore, putting on the “new man” is normative
Christianity
 Abide in Christ, submit to the Spirit, live in fellowship with
Him
 Put off the old, v. 5, 8 and 9
 Stop living for yourself.

7.  So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and
beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness,
humility, gentleness and patience; Colossians 3:12
 Start living for others; Christ is our example
 Philippians 2:1-9
 Realize your position, then renew your mind
 Ephesians 4:22-24; Romans 12:1-2
 Only then can you put on the new man
 Heart of compassion: σπλαγχνα splanchna

8.  So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and
beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness,
humility, gentleness and patience; Colossians 3:12
 Kindness: χρηστοτης, Romans 3:12
 Humility: 1 Peter 5:5
 Gentleness: Fruit of the Spirit Galatians 5:22-23
 Patient: “long burning” Colossians 1:11

9.  … bearing with one another, and forgiving each other,
whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the
Lord forgave you, so also should you Col 3:13
 Bearing with one another: ἀνεχομενοι anechomenoi
 Forgiving one another: χαριζομενοι charizomenoi
 Romans 15:7, Ephesians 4:32
 Just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you
 John 13:5-15

10.  Beyond all these things put on love, which is the
perfect bond of unity. Colossians 3:14
 “On top of all these put on love…”
 Need to be serving others in love, not for wrong motives,
i.e. our selves.
 Our calling, Ephesians 4:1-3
 Bond: συνδεσμος syndesmos, ligament (Col 2:19)
 Love is the bond that holds the Church together
 Perfect: τελειοτητος teleiotētos, mature (Phil 3:12)
