INTERIORDESIGNTHESIS
“This thesis proposes to design an accessible and sustainable building with a
focus on balance and tranquility in both a Mental Health Treatment Facility and a Fitness and Wellness
Centre through the adaptive re-use of the Newmarket Community Centre located in the heart of Newmarket,
Ontario. To provide a space that accommodates all users, focusing on both mind and body based on
behavioral needs and the well-being of all occupants.”

“A modern feel is created with the use of clean straight lines, where the horizontal lines
suggest a feeling of calmness and stability, while vertical lines give a sense of balance
and formality. All elements of the design reflect the companies brand and philosophy,
resulting in an energetic and collaborative work space where Motive’s Graphic Design
team can find inspiration through their surroundings.
Each of the client’s requirements were taken into consideration and the functional pro-
gram has been utilized in an organized and efficient manner, with additional focus on
current design trends and sustainable design initiatives.
Productivity was a large focus in this design process so
collaborative group spaces and private spaces were designed so that each worker is
considered and comfortable. Spaces where the design team can work together to col-
laborate and brainstorm new ideas are offered throughout the office space.
The design of the Motive Graphic Studio corporate office
focusses on a simplistic yet energetic environment.”

“The architectural and interior design elements that have been incorporated into this project were inspired by restau-
rants in Copenhagen, Denmark. Combining particular elements into this project that are based on existing spaces lo-
cated within my selected culture is how the space makes guests feel as though they are walking in to a Danish restau-
rant. Simplistic design is seen throughout many of the spaces where the simple structured layouts and monochro-
matic color schemes help to accentuate the splashes of color used throughout furnishing and accessories. Concrete
flooring in combination with bright white walls and ceilings were repeatedly shown through research, where the lively
green plant life and colorful furniture and lighting stand out tremendously, separating each space while creating a
comfortable and relaxing environment. Each of these elements have been utilized though the design of Copenhagen
Danish Cuisine & Bar in a way that speaks to Danish architecture and interior design.”

THE STEELE RESIDENCE
“Located in Utopia, Ontario, this residential
design project focusses on passive solar design and
modern sustainability. With each element reflecting
sustainability and the use of the sun, a successful
design was accomplished.
Bringing an open feel to the central space of the
home, the living, dining and kitchen space are
migrated together in order to create a sense of unity
and harmony. An open atrium plays on the use of the
sun throughout the design, bringing additional sun-
light into the surrounding space, while providing the
residents with a connection to nature.
Exploring Passive solar design, a South facing
trombe wall acts as a solar mass to heat and cool
the space, while geothermal energy is also supplied
through the adjacent pond.
Overall, this design brings an open and inviting feel
to a sustainable and energy efficient home.
