1. Sept. 28: Discussion for The Great Train Robbery
Q1: How many sequences can you identify from the first 4 scenes in The Great Train
Robbery?
A1: I think there are four divisions: bandit on the platform stunned the webmaster,
after detonating the bomb and escaped to pick the train above.
Q2: Putting together the 4 scenes, what effect(s) do you think that Dir. Porter achieved
to build for his film story and for his audience?
A1: We think if we were the directors, we will also use the same order of these 4
shots.
Because this order can let audience clearly knew what the movie happened,
and this movie is use the method of chronological order.
A2: The first four scenes of the arrangement, a clear expression of the outline of the
film story, progressive into the movie theme, with the scene changes, the story is also
intensified, the audience's mood also followed up, will make people want to see the
last the end.
A3: To hand over time of the 4 scenes and explan the pocess of things. It's
arrangement can make the audience feel more nervous.
Discussion questions for Chaplin’s Modern Times (1936)
1. What could be the theme(s) of this film?
2. What is the function of the clock in the very beginning of the film(also identify the type of the shot)?
3. What is the technique used to connect the two scenes “a flock of sheep” and “a group of men out of the
subway” and what meanings may be brought out from this technique?
4. Identify the shots used in 1’58-2’28. How does the camera introduce the factory?
5. Identify different types of machine(or during 2’28-23’34). What is the relationship between man and
machine?
6. Evaluate the scenes before 23’34. What are the shot types or camera movements that attract you
the most? Explain their functions in this film.
1. I think the factory workers are the theme of the film.
Themes are the fundamental and often universal ideas explored in a literary work. “Factory workers” is
not a theme.
2. The clock shows the time of what people should do on that time. Like in the beginning, the clock
shows about to be 6:00, that’s the time when people waking up and ready for work. And at
noon and afternoon. Good interpretation.
3. The director connected the scene of a flock of sheep with a group of men out of the subway, to
metaphor symbolize people are like those animals going out of the fence/subway to go
eat/work (which eating is the job for those sheep.) very good.
4. The director used an extreme long shot for the outside of the factory, then high angle shot of
people entering the factory, then used pan right to show the audiences all the machines in the
factory. Good observation.
5. The relationship between the worker and the machine was quite close. The worker can’t miss any
movement (they use tools to twist the thing moving on the machine), and the main character
finally went insane from doing all the work and got send to the hospital.
Okay.
6. I think the shot of the outside of the factory attracts me the most. It’s an extreme long shot. I
thought it shows the size of the factory and marks the industrial time.
Good.
1. comedy, normal and not normal, the people are to mechanize
Themes are the fundamental and often universal ideas explored in a literary work.
2. Time is important to with humans because it reminds us when we should to certain thingswhat to do
3. Sheep are similar the people. fade-in fade-out
Good.
4. ELS.LS.LS.LS.pan shot background and environment
That’s right.
5. Everyone's actions are repeated, very mechanized, even when the work is stopped, the action continues
Good observation.
6.LS Continue to use LS, let the role associated with the environment
Okay. But which scene do you refer to?
1. We think this film theme could be automatic. (the answer should be more specific ie. automatic machine
and human beings)
2. The time that incidents that something is going to happened.
3.fade-out and fade-in
4.Ha , Pan shot , Is
5. man is worker and machine make him cazy.--> a worker and how the machine drives him crazy
6.Pan shot, can see the surrounding in the factory. (please provide more details to explain why the scene
impresses you)
1. I think the busy work makes people crazy is the theme of the film.
That’s right
2. To the factory workers, the clock is means that it’s time for to work. CU:the clock
Okay.
3.Fade-out,people like the sheep.
Yes.
4.The director used an extreme long shot to shoot the outside of the factory, and the high angle shot of the
staff into the factory interior, then used the high angle shot and pan shot to shoot from the right side of the
machine.
Good.
5.People like the machine, need to rest or maintain, overwork will lead to bad results.
Good observation.
6.I think the shot of the gear rotation attracts me the most .It’s a pan shot.I thought it represents the progress
of the industrial age.
A strong argument with a clear explanation.
4. Oct.19: On Quotes from Dracula
The Diary of Jonathan Harker, May 3 1885.
At last my long journey is drawing to its close. What the eventual end will be, I
cannot foresee. But whatever may happen, I can rest secure that I will have done all in
my power to achieve success.
The last lap of my journey from the village of Klausenberg proved to be more
difficult than I had anticipated…due to the reluctance on the part of the coach driver
to take me all the way. However, as there was no other transport available, I was forced
to travel the last few kilometers on foot before arriving at Castle D.
The castle appeared innocuous in the warm afternoon sun, and all seemed
normal… but for one thing: There were no birds singing. As I crossed the wooden
bridge and entered the gateway, it suddenly seemed to become much colder due, no
doubt, to the icy waters of the mountain torrent I had just crossed. However, I deemed
myself lucky to have secured this post and did not intend to falter in my purpose.

Title: The Truman Show
Year of Issue: 1998
Dir.: Peter Weir
Cast: Jim Carrey, Laura Leggett Linney
I. Setting
II. Plot Summary:
1. This film is one of the famous movies in the world.
2. The film stars Jim Carrey as Truman Burbank, the main actor, adopted and
raised by a corporation inside a simulated television show revolving around his life.
3. Truman Burbank is the unsuspecting star of The Truman Show, a reality
television program which is broadcast live around the clock and across the globe.
4. His entire life has taken place within a giant arcological dome in Hollywood,
fashioned to create the seaside town of Seahaven Island, and equipped with
thousands of cameras to monitor all aspects of Truman's life.
5. All of Seahaven's residents are actors
6. Executive producer, Christof, who seeks to capture Truman's real emotion
and human behavior, give audiences a relatable everyman, and protect him from the
outside world with a sense of normalcy.
7. During his college years, Truman was intended to fall in love with and marry
co-student Meryl, but he fell in love with another actress, Sylvia.
8. Sylvia managed to bring Truman out of the sight of cameras long enough to
warn him that his reality is fake before she was taken away, with her "father"
claiming they are traveling to Fiji.
9. While Truman went on to marry Meryl, he continues to fantasize about
Sylvia, using scraps from magazines to recreate her face in secret, and seeks travel to
Fiji.
10. The film begins during the thirtieth year of the show. During the day, Truman
notices strange occurrences that all seem centered on him. Despite efforts by Meryl
and Truman's best friend Marlon to reassure Truman, Truman becomes even more
suspicious about his life.
11. One day, he takes Meryl by surprise by going on an impromptu road trip, but
their way is blocked by apparent and increasingly implausible emergencies. Meryl
begins to break down from the stress, and during an argument with Truman, breaks
character and is later taken off the show.
12. The next day, the producers find Truman sleeping in his basement. Marlon is
sent to check on Truman, only to find he has disappeared through a makeshift
tunnel.
13. Truman is found sailing out of Seahaven, having conquered his fear of water,
and Christof resumes the broadcast as he sends a man-made lightning storm to try to
capsize the boat.
14. Network executives fear that Truman may die on live television, but Truman
manages to persist. Realizing he cannot dissuade Truman any further, Christof ends
the storm.
15. Truman continues to sail until – to his surprise – his boat punctures the wall of
the dome. He finds an exit door, but Christof, speaking directly to Truman through a
speaker system, tries to convince him to stay, stating there is "no more truth" in the
real world and "I know you better than you know yourself", that he brings comfort to
his audience and that by staying in his artificial world, he would have nothing to fear.
16. Truman considers this, then states: "You never had a camera in my head!" and
leaves. Watching the show at home, Sylvia races to meet Truman.
III. Which part(s) that impressed you most and why?
I feel tThis movie is very unbelievable for me. Why can the actors or actress be as
Truman’ “friends” or “family”for thirty years? And if I was Truman, I must be crazy
when I know the truth. Everyone watches at me everyday all the time, and I think it is
ridiculous. And my lover is just acting as “my lover”. I can’t image that. But I am glad
that Truman finally found the exit door and leavedleft. He can live without people’s
being observed by the public watching.

You provide very good responses to all the questions. However, there are some
grammatical errors and wording problems you should pay more attention to.
Discussion for Hitchcock's The Birds
1. Summarize the opening sequence(0’00~9’24).
Malanie walked through the street and entered a pet shop. She saw a lot birds spiraling before
she went into the shop.
Malanie went upstairs of the pet shop askinged for her myna bird she ordered. Mrs. MacGruder
told her the delivery was late.
Malanie wasn’t happy about them not being on time. Mrs. MacGruder went inside to make a
call.
Mitch came in to the pet shop asking Malanie if she could help him. Malanie had this grin on her
face pretended she worked there. Mitch asked for some lovebirds but Malanie kept getting the

address.
My name is Kathy H. I am 28 years old. I've been a carer for nine years. And I'm good at my job. My patients
always do better than expected and are hardly ever classified as agitated, even if they're about to make a
donation. I'm not trying to boast, but I feel a great sense of pride in what we do. Carers and donors have achieved
so much. That said, we aren't machines. In the end, it wears you down. I suppose that's why I now spend most
of my time not looking forwards but looking back, to The Cottages and Hailsham, and what happened to us
there. Me, Tommy, and Ruth.
***
Miss Emily: Good morning, students.
Students: Good morning, Miss Emily.
Miss Emily: It has come to my attention that three burned cigarettes were
discovered, hidden behind a pot in the flower garden. I know that on
occasion students have seen some of the caretakers and deliverymen
smoking cigarettes, but I must emphasize, once again, that it is much,
much worse for a student of Hailsham to smoke cigarettes than anyone
else. Students of Hailsham are special. Keeping yourselves well, keeping
yourselves healthy inside, is of paramount importance. Have I made
myself clear?
Students: Yes, Miss Emily.
***
Student A: Look. Who's that with Miss Emily?
Student B: Do you think it's the new guardian? Miss Lucy.
Student A: I think it must be. We haven't had a new guardian for ages.
***
Miss Lucy: Why didn't Tommy get the ball? When it bounced over the fence, it
couldn't have been far from him.
Student A: The fence is the boundary of the Hailsham grounds. We don't go outside
the boundary, Miss Lucy. It's too dangerous.
Miss Lucy: Dangerous?
Student A: There was once a boy who had a big row with all his friends and then ran
off beyond the boundary. They found him, two days later, in the woods.
Tied to a tree with his hands and feet cut off. Dead. And there was the girl
who climbed over the fence, by the front gate. And when she tried to get
back, she wasn't allowed. And then she starved. Out there. Right by the gates.
Miss Lucy: Who told you these stories?
Student A: Everybody knows them.
Miss Lucy: And how do you know they're true?
Student A: Of course they're true. Who'd make up stories as horrible as that?

  • 2. 1. Sept. 28: Discussion for The Great Train Robbery Q1: How many sequences can you identify from the first 4 scenes in The Great Train Robbery? A1: I think there are four divisions: bandit on the platform stunned the webmaster, after detonating the bomb and escaped to pick the train above. Q2: Putting together the 4 scenes, what effect(s) do you think that Dir. Porter achieved to build for his film story and for his audience? A1: We think if we were the directors, we will also use the same order of these 4 shots. Because this order can let audience clearly knew what the movie happened, and this movie is use the method of chronological order. A2: The first four scenes of the arrangement, a clear expression of the outline of the film story, progressive into the movie theme, with the scene changes, the story is also intensified, the audience's mood also followed up, will make people want to see the last the end. A3: To hand over time of the 4 scenes and explan the pocess of things. It's arrangement can make the audience feel more nervous.

  • 10. Discussion questions for Chaplin’s Modern Times (1936) 1. What could be the theme(s) of this film? 2. What is the function of the clock in the very beginning of the film(also identify the type of the shot)? 3. What is the technique used to connect the two scenes “a flock of sheep” and “a group of men out of the subway” and what meanings may be brought out from this technique? 4. Identify the shots used in 1’58-2’28. How does the camera introduce the factory? 5. Identify different types of machine(or during 2’28-23’34). What is the relationship between man and machine? 6. Evaluate the scenes before 23’34. What are the shot types or camera movements that attract you the most? Explain their functions in this film. 1. I think the factory workers are the theme of the film. Themes are the fundamental and often universal ideas explored in a literary work. “Factory workers” is not a theme. 2. The clock shows the time of what people should do on that time. Like in the beginning, the clock shows about to be 6:00, that’s the time when people waking up and ready for work. And at noon and afternoon. Good interpretation. 3. The director connected the scene of a flock of sheep with a group of men out of the subway, to metaphor symbolize people are like those animals going out of the fence/subway to go eat/work (which eating is the job for those sheep.) very good. 4. The director used an extreme long shot for the outside of the factory, then high angle shot of people entering the factory, then used pan right to show the audiences all the machines in the factory. Good observation. 5. The relationship between the worker and the machine was quite close. The worker can’t miss any movement (they use tools to twist the thing moving on the machine), and the main character finally went insane from doing all the work and got send to the hospital. Okay. 6. I think the shot of the outside of the factory attracts me the most. It’s an extreme long shot. I thought it shows the size of the factory and marks the industrial time. Good. 1. comedy, normal and not normal, the people are to mechanize Themes are the fundamental and often universal ideas explored in a literary work. 2. Time is important to with humans because it reminds us when we should to certain thingswhat to do 3. Sheep are similar the people. fade-in fade-out
  • 11. Good. 4. ELS.LS.LS.LS.pan shot background and environment That’s right. 5. Everyone's actions are repeated, very mechanized, even when the work is stopped, the action continues Good observation. 6.LS Continue to use LS, let the role associated with the environment Okay. But which scene do you refer to? 1. We think this film theme could be automatic. (the answer should be more specific ie. automatic machine and human beings) 2. The time that incidents that something is going to happened. 3.fade-out and fade-in 4.Ha , Pan shot , Is 5. man is worker and machine make him cazy.--> a worker and how the machine drives him crazy 6.Pan shot, can see the surrounding in the factory. (please provide more details to explain why the scene impresses you) 1. I think the busy work makes people crazy is the theme of the film. That’s right 2. To the factory workers, the clock is means that it’s time for to work. CU:the clock Okay. 3.Fade-out,people like the sheep. Yes. 4.The director used an extreme long shot to shoot the outside of the factory, and the high angle shot of the staff into the factory interior, then used the high angle shot and pan shot to shoot from the right side of the machine. Good. 5.People like the machine, need to rest or maintain, overwork will lead to bad results. Good observation. 6.I think the shot of the gear rotation attracts me the most .It’s a pan shot.I thought it represents the progress of the industrial age. A strong argument with a clear explanation.
  • 12. 4. Oct.19: On Quotes from Dracula The Diary of Jonathan Harker, May 3 1885. At last my long journey is drawing to its close. What the eventual end will be, I cannot foresee. But whatever may happen, I can rest secure that I will have done all in my power to achieve success. The last lap of my journey from the village of Klausenberg proved to be more difficult than I had anticipated…due to the reluctance on the part of the coach driver to take me all the way. However, as there was no other transport available, I was forced to travel the last few kilometers on foot before arriving at Castle D. The castle appeared innocuous in the warm afternoon sun, and all seemed normal… but for one thing: There were no birds singing. As I crossed the wooden bridge and entered the gateway, it suddenly seemed to become much colder due, no doubt, to the icy waters of the mountain torrent I had just crossed. However, I deemed myself lucky to have secured this post and did not intend to falter in my purpose. 1. Who is the narrator? 2. What’s the form of this passage? 3. • 17. Title: The Truman Show Year of Issue: 1998 Dir.: Peter Weir Cast: Jim Carrey, Laura Leggett Linney I. Setting II. Plot Summary: 1. This film is one of the famous movies in the world. 2. The film stars Jim Carrey as Truman Burbank, the main actor, adopted and raised by a corporation inside a simulated television show revolving around his life. 3. Truman Burbank is the unsuspecting star of The Truman Show, a reality television program which is broadcast live around the clock and across the globe. 4. His entire life has taken place within a giant arcological dome in Hollywood, fashioned to create the seaside town of Seahaven Island, and equipped with thousands of cameras to monitor all aspects of Truman's life. 5. All of Seahaven's residents are actors 6. Executive producer, Christof, who seeks to capture Truman's real emotion and human behavior, give audiences a relatable everyman, and protect him from the outside world with a sense of normalcy. 7. During his college years, Truman was intended to fall in love with and marry co-student Meryl, but he fell in love with another actress, Sylvia. 8. Sylvia managed to bring Truman out of the sight of cameras long enough to warn him that his reality is fake before she was taken away, with her "father" claiming they are traveling to Fiji. 9. While Truman went on to marry Meryl, he continues to fantasize about Sylvia, using scraps from magazines to recreate her face in secret, and seeks travel to Fiji. 10. The film begins during the thirtieth year of the show. During the day, Truman notices strange occurrences that all seem centered on him. Despite efforts by Meryl and Truman's best friend Marlon to reassure Truman, Truman becomes even more
  • 18. suspicious about his life. 11. One day, he takes Meryl by surprise by going on an impromptu road trip, but their way is blocked by apparent and increasingly implausible emergencies. Meryl begins to break down from the stress, and during an argument with Truman, breaks character and is later taken off the show. 12. The next day, the producers find Truman sleeping in his basement. Marlon is sent to check on Truman, only to find he has disappeared through a makeshift tunnel. 13. Truman is found sailing out of Seahaven, having conquered his fear of water, and Christof resumes the broadcast as he sends a man-made lightning storm to try to capsize the boat. 14. Network executives fear that Truman may die on live television, but Truman manages to persist. Realizing he cannot dissuade Truman any further, Christof ends the storm. 15. Truman continues to sail until – to his surprise – his boat punctures the wall of the dome. He finds an exit door, but Christof, speaking directly to Truman through a speaker system, tries to convince him to stay, stating there is "no more truth" in the real world and "I know you better than you know yourself", that he brings comfort to his audience and that by staying in his artificial world, he would have nothing to fear. 16. Truman considers this, then states: "You never had a camera in my head!" and leaves. Watching the show at home, Sylvia races to meet Truman. III. Which part(s) that impressed you most and why? I feel tThis movie is very unbelievable for me. Why can the actors or actress be as Truman’ “friends” or “family”for thirty years? And if I was Truman, I must be crazy when I know the truth. Everyone watches at me everyday all the time, and I think it is ridiculous. And my lover is just acting as “my lover”. I can’t image that. But I am glad that Truman finally found the exit door and leavedleft. He can live without people’s being observed by the public watching.

  • 31. My name is Kathy H. I am 28 years old. I've been a carer for nine years. And I'm good at my job. My patients always do better than expected and are hardly ever classified as agitated, even if they're about to make a donation. I'm not trying to boast, but I feel a great sense of pride in what we do. Carers and donors have achieved so much. That said, we aren't machines. In the end, it wears you down. I suppose that's why I now spend most of my time not looking forwards but looking back, to The Cottages and Hailsham, and what happened to us there. Me, Tommy, and Ruth. *** Miss Emily: Good morning, students. Students: Good morning, Miss Emily. Miss Emily: It has come to my attention that three burned cigarettes were discovered, hidden behind a pot in the flower garden. I know that on occasion students have seen some of the caretakers and deliverymen smoking cigarettes, but I must emphasize, once again, that it is much, much worse for a student of Hailsham to smoke cigarettes than anyone else. Students of Hailsham are special. Keeping yourselves well, keeping yourselves healthy inside, is of paramount importance. Have I made myself clear? Students: Yes, Miss Emily. *** Student A: Look. Who's that with Miss Emily? Student B: Do you think it's the new guardian? Miss Lucy. Student A: I think it must be. We haven't had a new guardian for ages. *** Miss Lucy: Why didn't Tommy get the ball? When it bounced over the fence, it couldn't have been far from him. Student A: The fence is the boundary of the Hailsham grounds. We don't go outside the boundary, Miss Lucy. It's too dangerous. Miss Lucy: Dangerous? Student A: There was once a boy who had a big row with all his friends and then ran off beyond the boundary. They found him, two days later, in the woods. Tied to a tree with his hands and feet cut off. Dead. And there was the girl who climbed over the fence, by the front gate. And when she tried to get back, she wasn't allowed. And then she starved. Out there. Right by the gates. Miss Lucy: Who told you these stories? Student A: Everybody knows them. Miss Lucy: And how do you know they're true? Student A: Of course they're true. Who'd make up stories as horrible as that? Cited from: “Never Let Me Go (2010) Movie Script.” Springfield! Springfield!
