With COVID-19 still disrupting training and coaches looking to plan for returning to play, I thought I would share my UKSCA presentation which I recently passed. I used an example at Heriots Rugby and shows our return to play program in the aim of playing back in October. I'm keen to share this to help any other coaches and to create any discussion/feedback for myself and see if there is other things I could have done to improve on this. Really keen to start sharing more work and see how I can improve and changes things from feedback!
Colin Jones presented a case study on his client Eileen, a 68-year-old woman diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome. Eileen was dependent on others for activities of daily living and mobility following her illness. The occupational therapy process included assessments, goal setting to improve independence, and recommending Eileen for rehabilitation. Interventions targeted improving upper limb function and mobility to allow Eileen to return safely to her two-story home.
This case study documents a strength and conditioning program for a 22-year-old wide receiver on an American football team. The athlete's goals were to improve upper and lower body strength. Testing showed strengths in lower body power but weaknesses in speed, flexibility, and proprioception. A periodized program was designed with general preparation, specific preparation, and competition phases. After 12 weeks, the athlete showed improvements in strength, power, and agility, though speed and flexibility did not significantly improve. Future programs should focus more on these areas.
This case study documents a 3-month integrated coaching program for a 16-year old male soccer player playing as a centre defender for Portsmouth FC Youth Team. A needs analysis identified areas for improvement in speed, power, change of direction, and injury risk reduction. The program included strength, power, speed, agility and endurance training over 12 weeks. Testing showed improvements in vertical jump, sprint times, change of direction, and lifting strength. Further recommendations included more conditioning drills, GPS monitoring, and agility development.

This case study examines the strength and conditioning program for a 22-year old Irish rugby union prop. Needs analysis identified key physical qualities like squat strength, power, and anaerobic capacity for scrumming and lineouts. Testing evaluated size, strength, power, speed, agility, and aerobic/anaerobic capacity. The preseason program emphasized hypertrophy, strength, and power development through compound lifts, complexes, and split sessions to increase muscle and fitness for the upcoming season. The program was periodized and included monitoring to prevent overtraining and support continued progress.

This document provides a 3-month conditioning program for a 17-year old central defender completing a football scholarship. The needs analysis identifies that the player needs to increase lean muscle mass, speed, strength, agility, and functional movement. The program consists of a 6-week hypertrophy block followed by a 6-week max strength block. The strength program focuses on multi-joint exercises at 85-100% of 5RM. The conditioning program emphasizes developing high-speed running, sprinting, and muscular resilience through small-sided games and position-specific drills. Training is periodized and volume is reduced later in the week to optimize readiness for games. The program aims to reduce injury risk and increase performance.

This document provides an overview, needs analysis, test results, training plan summary, and evaluation for a 23-year old tight head prop rugby player over a 3-month pre-season period. The needs analysis examines the positional demands of open play and set pieces for forwards. Test results show improvements in strength, power, and speed over the pre-power testing period. The training plan progressed from technique to maximum strength and power over 17 weeks utilizing various periodization models and exercise variations. Future plans include better communication between coaches and improving post-season testing for a more precise pre-season program.

ABSTRACT: [Purpose] The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of static stretching (SS) and dynamic
stretching (DS) on temporal range of motion (ROM) and muscle strength and investigate better ways of stretching
before some sporting activities. [Subjects] The Subjects were 18 healthy Japanese women. [Method] Subjects
performed SS and DS of their triceps surae muscles. We measured ROM of ankle dorsiflexion and muscle strength of
ankle plantar flexion of subjects before stretching, just after stretching, and 5 minutes and 10 minutes later. [Results]
ROM of subjects who did SS increased just after stretching and this was maintained for 10 minutes. On the other hand,
ROM of DS increased gradually and reached that of SS. Subjects who performed DS showed significantly greater ankle
plantar flexion strength than subjects who did SS from just after the stretching to 10 minutes later. [Conclusion] These
findings indicate that DS 10 minutes before performing some sporting activities in which peak muscle strength is
necessary would enhance performance.
