The document summarizes research from images taken by the New Horizons spacecraft of Charon, Pluto's largest moon. The images reveal Charon has a reddish polar cap at its north pole. Thermal models show the pole experiences long periods of extreme cold temperatures due to Charon's high obliquity and long seasons. The researchers hypothesize that methane and other volatiles escaping from Pluto's atmosphere become cold-trapped at Charon's winter pole, where they are processed by radiation into non-volatile organic compounds that remain on the surface to form the red cap. Spectral and compositional evidence supports this mechanism of seasonal accumulation of photolyzed volatiles to explain Charon's unique polar color

This document summarizes research on reconstructing past atmospheric oxygen (O2) levels over the past 800,000 years using O2/N2 ratios measured from ancient air bubbles trapped in ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica. The main findings are:
1) O2/N2 ratios from multiple ice cores show a consistent decline of 8.4‰ per million years over the past 800,000 years, equivalent to a 0.7% decline in atmospheric O2 levels.
2) This decline is unlikely to be explained by changes in air bubble formation processes or other non-atmospheric factors, as argon/nitrogen ratios from the same ice cores show an inconsistent increasing trend over the same

Chandra detected X-rays from Pluto in 2014 and 2015 observations, finding 8 photons in the 0.31-0.60 keV band. No photons were detected from 0.60-1.0 keV. Allowing for background, there was a statistically significant detection of X-rays from Pluto. Charge exchange between solar wind ions and Pluto's atmosphere can produce X-rays and may explain the detection, but the observed rate is higher than expected given New Horizons measurements of Pluto's atmosphere and solar wind conditions. The solar wind may be focused within 60,000 km of Pluto to produce the detected X-ray emission.
Observed glacier and volatile distribution on Pluto from atmosphere–topograph...Sérgio Sacani
Pluto has a variety of surface frosts and landforms as well as a
complex atmosphere1. There is ongoing geological activity related
to the massive Sputnik Planum glacier, mostly made of nitrogen (N2)
ice mixed with solid carbon monoxide and methane2, covering the
4-kilometre-deep, 1,000-kilometre-wide basin of Sputnik Planum1,3
near the anti-Charon point. The glacier has been suggested to arise
from a source region connected to the deep interior, or from a sink
collecting the volatiles released planetwide1. Thin deposits of N2
frost, however, were also detected at mid-northern latitudes and
methane ice was observed to cover most of Pluto except for the
darker, frost-free equatorial regions2. Here we report numerical
simulations of the evolution of N2, methane and carbon monoxide
on Pluto over thousands of years. The model predicts N2 ice
accumulation in the deepest low-latitude basin and the threefold
increase in atmospheric pressure that has been observed to occur
since 19884–6. This points to atmospheric–topographic processes as
the origin of Sputnik Planum’s N2 glacier. The same simulations also
reproduce the observed quantities of volatiles in the atmosphere and
show frosts of methane, and sometimes N2, that seasonally cover the
mid- and high latitudes, explaining the bright northern polar cap
reported in the 1990s7,8 and the observed ice distribution in 20152.
The model also predicts that most of these seasonal frosts should
disappear in the next decade.

This research article explores how the orbital configuration of Kepler-62f, a potentially habitable exoplanet in a five-planet system, could affect its climate and habitability. N-body simulations were used to determine the stable range of orbital eccentricities for Kepler-62f. Climate simulations using two global climate models then examined the planet's surface habitability across this range of eccentricities and for different atmospheric compositions. The simulations found multiple combinations of orbital and atmospheric parameters that could allow for surface liquid water on Kepler-62f, including higher orbital eccentricities coupled with high planetary obliquity or atmospheric CO2 levels above 3 bars.
Evidence for plumes of water on Europa has previously been found using the Hubble Space Telescope using two
different observing techniques. Roth et al. found line emission from the dissociation products of water. Sparks et al.
found evidence for off-limb continuum absorption as Europa transited Jupiter. Here, we present a new transit
observation of Europa that shows a second event at the same location as a previous plume candidate from Sparks
et al., raising the possibility of a consistently active source of erupting material on Europa. This conclusion is
bolstered by comparison with a nighttime thermal image from the Galileo Photopolarimeter-Radiometer that shows
a thermal anomaly at the same location, within the uncertainties. The anomaly has the highest observed brightness
temperature on the Europa nightside. If heat flow from a subsurface liquid water reservoir causes the thermal
anomaly, its depth is ≈1.8–2 km, under simple modeling assumptions, consistent with scenarios in which a liquid
water reservoir has formed within a thick ice shell. Models that favor thin regions within the ice shell that connect
directly to the ocean, however, cannot be excluded, nor modifications to surface thermal inertia by subsurface
activity. Alternatively, vapor deposition surrounding an active vent could increase the thermal inertia of the surface
and cause the thermal anomaly. This candidate plume region may offer a promising location for an initial
characterization of Europa’s internal water and ice and for seeking evidence of Europa’s habitability.
Cassini finds molecular hydrogen in the Enceladus plume: Evidence for hydroth...Sérgio Sacani
Saturn’s moon Enceladus has an ice-covered ocean; a plume of material erupts from
cracks in the ice. The plume contains chemical signatures of water-rock interaction
between the ocean and a rocky core.We used the Ion Neutral Mass Spectrometer onboard
the Cassini spacecraft to detect molecular hydrogen in the plume. By using the instrument’s
open-source mode, background processes of hydrogen production in the instrument were
minimized and quantified, enabling the identification of a statistically significant signal of
hydrogen native to Enceladus. We find that the most plausible source of this hydrogen is
ongoing hydrothermal reactions of rock containing reduced minerals and organic materials.
The relatively high hydrogen abundance in the plume signals thermodynamic disequilibrium
that favors the formation of methane from CO2 in Enceladus’ ocean.

Roth et al. (2014a) reported evidence for plumes of water venting from a southern high latitude
region on Europa – spectroscopic detection of off-limb line emission from the dissociation
products of water. Here, we present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) direct images of Europa in
the far ultraviolet (FUV) as it transited the smooth face of Jupiter, in order to measure absorption
from gas or aerosols beyond the Europa limb. Out of ten observations we found three in which
plume activity could be implicated. Two show statistically significant features at latitudes similar
to Roth et al., and the third, at a more equatorial location. We consider potential systematic
effects that might influence the statistical analysis and create artifacts, and are unable to find any
that can definitively explain the features, although there are reasons to be cautious. If the
apparent absorption features are real, the magnitude of implied outgassing is similar to that of the
Roth et al. feature, however the apparent activity appears more frequently in our data.
Climatic consequences of regional nuclear conflicts27Nav
This study uses a climate model to simulate the climatic effects of a regional nuclear war between two countries using 100 Hiroshima-sized nuclear weapons on cities in the subtropics. The model finds that the smoke produced by urban fires would cause significant global cooling and reductions in precipitation lasting over a decade. The climate effects are more long-lasting than previous studies due to the smoke being lofted higher into the stratosphere where removal is slower. Reductions in surface sunlight, temperatures, and precipitation of up to 15 W/m^2, 1°C, and 9% respectively are found for several years globally following the conflict.

On the possibility of through passage of asteroid bodies across the Earth’s a...Sérgio Sacani
We have studied the conditions of through passage of asteroids with diameters 200, 100, and
50 m, consisting of three types of materials – iron, stone, and water ice, across the Earth’s
atmosphere with a minimum trajectory altitude in the range 10–15 km. The conditions of this
passage with a subsequent exit into outer space with the preservation of a substantial fraction
of the initial mass have been found. The results obtained support our idea explaining one of the
long-standing problems of astronomy – the Tunguska phenomenon, which has not received
reasonable and comprehensive interpretations to date. We argue that the Tunguska event was
caused by an iron asteroid body, which passed through the Earth’s atmosphere and continued
to the near-solar orbit.
This document presents an analysis of transit spectroscopy observations of three exoplanets - WASP-12 b, WASP-17 b, and WASP-19 b - using the Wide Field Camera 3 instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope. The observations achieved almost photon-limited precision but uncertainties in the transit depths were increased by the uneven sampling of the light curves. The final transit spectra for all three planets are consistent with the presence of a water absorption feature at 1.4 microns, though the amplitude is smaller than expected from previous Spitzer observations possibly due to hazes. Due to degeneracies between models, the data cannot unambiguously constrain the atmospheric compositions without additional observations.
High-resolution UV/Optical/IR Imaging of Jupiter in 2016–2019Sérgio Sacani
Imaging observations of Jupiter with high spatial resolution were acquired beginning in 2016, with a cadence of 53
days to coincide with atmospheric observations of the Juno spacecraft during each perijove pass. The Wide Field
Camera 3 (WFC3) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) collected Jupiter images from 236 to 925 nm in 14
filters. The Near-Infrared Imager (NIRI) at Gemini North imaged Jovian thermal emission using a lucky-imaging
approach (co-adding the sharpest frames taken from a sequence of short exposures), using the M′ filter at 4.7 μm.
We discuss the data acquisition and processing and an archive collection that contains the processed WFC3 and
NIRI data (doi:10.17909/T94T1H). Zonal winds remain steady over time at most latitudes, but significant
evolution of the wind profile near 24°N in 2016 and near 15°S in 2017 was linked with convective superstorm
eruptions. Persistent mesoscale waves were seen throughout the 2016–2019 period. We link groups of lightning
flashes observed by the Juno team with water clouds in a large convective plume near 15°S and in cyclones near
35°N–55°N. Thermal infrared maps at the 10.8 micron wavelength obtained at the Very Large Telescope show
consistent high brightness temperature anomalies, despite a diversity of aerosol properties seen in the HST data.
Both WFC3 and NIRI imaging reveal depleted aerosols consistent with downwelling around the periphery of the
15°S storm, which was also observed by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. NIRI imaging of
the Great Red Spot shows that locally reduced cloud opacity is responsible for dark features within the vortex. The
HST data maps multiple concentric polar hoods of high-latitude hazes.
SPECTROSCOPIC CONFIRMATION OF THE EXISTENCE OF LARGE, DIFFUSE GALAXIES IN THE...Sérgio Sacani
We recently identified a population of low surface brightness objects in the field of the z = 0.023 Coma cluster,
using the Dragonfly Telephoto Array. Here we present Keck spectroscopy of one of the largest of these “ultradiffuse
galaxies” (UDGs), confirming that it is a member of the cluster. The galaxy has prominent absorption
features, including the Ca II H+K lines and the G-band, and no detected emission lines. Its radial velocity of
cz=6280±120 km s−1 is within the 1σ velocity dispersion of the Coma cluster. The galaxy has an effective
radius of 4.3 ± 0.3 kpc and a Sérsic index of 0.89 ± 0.06, as measured from Keck imaging. We find no indications
of tidal tails or other distortions, at least out to a radius of ∼2re. We show that UDGs are located in a previously
sparsely populated region of the size—magnitude plane of quiescent stellar systems, as they are ∼6 mag fainter
than normal early-type galaxies of the same size. It appears that the luminosity distribution of large quiescent
galaxies is not continuous, although this could largely be due to selection effects. Dynamical measurements are
needed to determine whether the dark matter halos of UDGs are similar to those of galaxies with the same
luminosity or to those of galaxies with the same size.
The document summarizes the discovery and characterization of exoplanet atmospheres over time. It discusses key observational highlights including the identification of molecules, day-night temperature variations, and variability in some atmospheres. Modeling techniques are also described that aim to constrain atmospheric properties by fitting millions of models to data. The summary outlines progress made but also future directions, such as direct imaging of young planets and the potential for characterizing small planets around M stars.
The importance of comets for the origin of life on Earth has been advocated for many decades. Amino acids are
key ingredients in chemistry, leading to life as we know it. Many primitive meteorites contain amino acids, and it
is generally believed that these are formed by aqueous alterations. In the collector aerogel and foil samples of the
Stardust mission after the flyby at comet Wild 2, the simplest form of amino acids, glycine, has been found
together with precursor molecules methylamine and ethylamine. Because of contamination issues of the samples,
a cometary origin was deduced from the 13C isotopic signature. We report the presence of volatile glycine
accompanied by methylamine and ethylamine in the coma of 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko measured by
the ROSINA (Rosetta Orbiter Spectrometer for Ion and Neutral Analysis) mass spectrometer, confirming the
Stardust results. Together with the detection of phosphorus and a multitude of organic molecules, this result
demonstrates that comets could have played a crucial role in the emergence of life on Earth.
A precise water_abundance_measurement_for_the_hot_jupiter_wasp_43bSérgio Sacani
This document presents a precise measurement of the water abundance in the atmosphere of the exoplanet WASP-43b using transmission and thermal emission spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope. The key findings are:
1) The water content of WASP-43b's atmosphere is consistent with solar composition at planetary temperatures, ranging from 0.4 to 3.5 times the solar water abundance.
2) This metallicity measurement extends the trend seen in the solar system of lower metal enrichment for higher mass planets.
3) Measuring a planet's water content constrains its formation location in the protoplanetary disk and provides insight into planetary formation models.

This document summarizes research on the transmission spectrum of the exoplanet HAT-P-11b, a Neptune-sized planet. Observations from the Hubble Space Telescope and Spitzer Space Telescope detected water vapor absorption in the planet's atmosphere at a wavelength of 1.4 micrometers. Analysis of the spectrum indicates the atmosphere is predominantly clear down to 1 mbar and has a hydrogen abundance similar to solar values. Atmospheric modeling suggests a metallicity around 190 times that of the Sun's, in agreement with core accretion planet formation theories. This makes HAT-P-11b the smallest exoplanet to date with a detected molecular signature in its atmosphere, providing new insights into the composition and formation of Neptune-sized

The document provides a spectral and morphological analysis of the remnant of Supernova 1987A using data from the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). ALMA images from 94 GHz to 672 GHz reveal non-thermal synchrotron and thermal dust emission components. The analysis shows a decreasing east-west asymmetry with frequency, attributed to shorter synchrotron lifetimes at high frequencies. Across the radio to far-infrared transition, excess emission is seen that could be due to a second synchrotron component, implying a pulsar wind nebula in the remnant interior.
Predictions of the_atmospheric_composition_of_gj_1132_bSérgio Sacani
GJ 1132 b is a nearby Earth-sized exoplanet transiting an M dwarf, and is amongst the most highly
characterizable small exoplanets currently known. In this paper we study the interaction of a magma
ocean with a water-rich atmosphere on GJ 1132b and determine that it must have begun with more
than 5 wt% initial water in order to still retain a water-based atmosphere. We also determine the
amount of O2
that can build up in the atmosphere as a result of hydrogen dissociation and loss.
We find that the magma ocean absorbs at most ∼ 10% of the O2 produced, whereas more than
90% is lost to space through hydrodynamic drag. The most common outcome for GJ 1132 b from our
simulations is a tenuous atmosphere dominated by O2
, although for very large initial water abundances
atmospheres with several thousands of bars of O2
are possible. A substantial steam envelope would
indicate either the existence of an earlier H2
envelope or low XUV flux over the system’s lifetime. A
steam atmosphere would also imply the continued existence of a magma ocean on GJ 1132 b. Further
modeling is needed to study the evolution of CO2
or N2
-rich atmospheres on GJ 1132 b.
Very regular high-frequency pulsation modes in young intermediate-mass starsSérgio Sacani
Asteroseismology probes the internal structures of stars by using their natural
pulsation frequencies1. It relies on identifying sequences of pulsation modes that can
be compared with theoretical models, which has been done successfully for many
classes of pulsators, including low-mass solar-type stars2, red giants3, high-mass stars4
and white dwarfs5. However, a large group of pulsating stars of intermediate mass—the
so-called δ Scuti stars—have rich pulsation spectra for which systematic mode
identification has not hitherto been possible6,7. This arises because only a seemingly
random subset of possible modes are excited and because rapid rotation tends to
spoil regular patterns8–10. Here we report the detection of remarkably regular
sequences of high-frequency pulsation modes in 60 intermediate-mass
main-sequence stars, which enables definitive mode identification. The space
motions of some of these stars indicate that they are members of known associations
of young stars, as confirmed by modelling of their pulsation spectra.
Radial velocity monitoring has found the signature of a Msin i = 1:3 M planet located within the Habitable Zone of Proxima
Centauri, the Sun’s closest neighbor (Anglada-Escudé et al. 2016). Despite a hotter past and an active host star the planet Proxima b
could have retained enough volatiles to sustain surface habitability (Ribas et al. 2016). Here we use a 3D Global Climate Model (GCM)
to simulate Proxima b’s atmosphere and water cycle for its two likely rotation modes (the 1:1 and 3:2 spin-orbit resonances) while
varying the unconstrained surface water inventory and atmospheric greenhouse eect (represented here with a CO2-N2 atmosphere.)
We find that a broad range of atmospheric compositions can allow surface liquid water. On a tidally-locked planet with a surface water
inventory larger than 0.6 Earth ocean, liquid water is always present (assuming 1 bar of N2), at least in the substellar region. Liquid
water covers the whole planet for CO2 partial pressures & 1 bar. For smaller water inventories, water can be trapped on the night side,
forming either glaciers or lakes, depending on the amount of greenhouse gases. With a non-synchronous rotation, a minimum CO2
pressure of 10 mbar (assuming 1 bar of N2) is required to avoid falling into a completely frozen snowball state if water is abundant.
If the planet is dryer, 0.5 bar of CO2 would suce to prevent the trapping of any arbitrary small water inventory into polar ice
caps. More generally, any low-obliquity planet within the classical habitable zone of its star should be in one of the climate regimes
discussed here.
We use our GCM to produce reflection/emission spectra and phase curves for the dierent rotations and surface volatile inventories.
We find that atmospheric characterization will be possible by direct imaging with forthcoming large telescopes thanks to an angular
separation of 7=D at 1 m (with the E-ELT) and a contrast of 10 7. The magnitude of the planet will allow for high-resolution
spectroscopy and the search for molecular signatures, including H2O, O2, and CO2.
The observation of thermal phase curves, although challenging, can be attempted with JWST, thanks to a contrast of 210 5 at 10 m.
Proxima b will also be an exceptional target for future IR interferometers. Within a decade it will be possible to image Proxima b and
possibly determine whether this exoplanet’s surface is habitable.
1) Global climate models that include sophisticated cloud schemes show that tidally locked planets can develop thick water clouds near the substellar point due to strong convection. These clouds greatly increase the planetary albedo and stabilize temperatures, allowing habitability at twice the stellar flux previously thought possible.
2) The cloud feedback is stabilizing, as higher stellar flux produces stronger convection and higher albedos. Substellar clouds can block outgoing radiation, reducing the day-night temperature contrast.
3) Non-tidally locked planets do not experience this stabilizing cloud feedback, as clouds only form over parts of the tropics and mid-latitudes. Their albedo decreases with increasing stellar flux, producing a destabil
This document presents a sample of 151 dwarf galaxies that exhibit optical spectroscopic signatures of accreting massive black holes. The sample was identified by systematically searching ~25,000 emission-line galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey with stellar masses comparable to or less than the Large Magellanic Cloud. Many of the galaxies show narrow-line signatures of black hole accretion, and some also exhibit broad H-alpha emission, indicating gas orbiting in the deep potential of a massive black hole. This increases the number of known active galaxies in this low stellar mass range by over an order of magnitude. The median stellar mass of the host galaxies is around 108.5 solar masses, around 1-2 magnitudes fainter than previous samples of

The blazar is lensed by a foreground galaxy, producing two resolved images (NE and SW) separated by 1". The observations were taken at frequencies corresponding to 350-1050 GHz in the blazar rest frame. Analysis of the flux ratio between the two images over time and frequency revealed a remarkable frequency-dependent behavior, implying a "chromatic structure" in the blazar jet. This is interpreted as evidence for a "core-shift effect" caused by plasmon ejection very near the base of the jet. The observations provide a unique probe of activity in the region where plasma acceleration occurs in blazar

Large scale mass_distribution_in_the_illustris_simulationSérgio Sacani
Observations at low redshifts thus far fail to account for all of the baryons expected in the
Universe according to cosmological constraints. A large fraction of the baryons presumably
resides in a thin and warm–hot medium between the galaxies, where they are difficult to observe
due to their low densities and high temperatures. Cosmological simulations of structure
formation can be used to verify this picture and provide quantitative predictions for the distribution
of mass in different large-scale structure components. Here we study the distribution
of baryons and dark matter at different epochs using data from the Illustris simulation. We
identify regions of different dark matter density with the primary constituents of large-scale
structure, allowing us to measure mass and volume of haloes, filaments and voids. At redshift
zero, we find that 49 per cent of the dark matter and 23 per cent of the baryons are within
haloes more massive than the resolution limit of 2 × 108 M⊙. The filaments of the cosmic
web host a further 45 per cent of the dark matter and 46 per cent of the baryons. The remaining
31 per cent of the baryons reside in voids. The majority of these baryons have been transported
there through active galactic nuclei feedback. We note that the feedback model of Illustris
is too strong for heavy haloes, therefore it is likely that we are overestimating this amount.
Categorizing the baryons according to their density and temperature, we find that 17.8 per cent
of them are in a condensed state, 21.6 per cent are present as cold, diffuse gas, and 53.9 per cent
are found in the state of a warm–hot intergalactic medium.

2) Case 1 showed strong stratospheric intrusions into the free troposphere, evidenced by high potential vorticity and very low humidity. Case 2 found that while biomass burning smoke was present, the enhanced ozone was most likely from coronal discharge lightning producing over a billion molecules of ozone.

Water vapour absorption_in_the_clear_atmosphere_of_a_neptune_sized_exoplanetSérgio Sacani

Haze heats Pluto’s atmosphere yet explains its cold temperatureSérgio Sacani
Pluto’s atmosphere is cold and hazy1–3. Recent observations1
have
shown it to be much colder than predicted theoretically4
, suggesting
an unknown cooling mechanism1
. Atmospheric gas molecules,
particularly water vapour, have been proposed as a coolant;
however, because Pluto’s thermal structure is expected to be in
radiative–conductive equilibrium4–9, the required water vapour
would need to be supersaturated by many orders of magnitude
under thermodynamic equilibrium conditions9
. Here we report
that atmospheric hazes, rather than gases, can explain Pluto’s
temperature profile. We find that haze particles have substantially
larger solar heating and thermal cooling rates than gas molecules,
dominating the atmospheric radiative balance from the ground to an
altitude of 700 kilometres, above which heat conduction maintains
an isothermal atmosphere. We conclude that Pluto’s atmosphere is
unique among Solar System planetary atmospheres, as its radiative
energy equilibrium is controlled primarily by haze particles instead
of gas molecules. We predict that Pluto is therefore several orders
of magnitude brighter at mid-infrared wavelengths than previously
thought—a brightness that could be detected by future telescopes.
The document summarizes findings from the Microwave Instrument on the Rosetta Orbiter (MIRO) regarding the subsurface properties and early activity of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Key points:
- MIRO detected water vapor emissions from the comet beginning in early June 2014 and measured the total water production rate, which varied from 0.3 kg/s to 1.2 kg/s between June and August.
- Water outgassing displayed periodic variations correlated with the comet's 12.4-hour rotation period and seemed to originate primarily from the comet's "neck" region.
- Subsurface temperatures measured by MIRO showed seasonal and diurnal variations, indicating radiation
A global map_of_the_nearest_known_brown_dwarfSérgio Sacani
This document summarizes research that used Doppler imaging techniques to create a two-dimensional cloud map of the brown dwarf Luhman 16B, located 2 parsecs from Earth. The map revealed large dark and bright cloud features, including a dark mid-latitude region and a brighter high-latitude spot that may be a polar vortex. This represents the first direct mapping of cloud features on an exoplanet or brown dwarf, providing new insights into atmospheric circulation and cloud formation in these objects.
This document summarizes research on determining temperatures, luminosities, and masses of the coldest known brown dwarfs. The key findings are:
1) Precise distances were measured for a sample of late-T and Y dwarfs using Spitzer Space Telescope astrometry, allowing accurate calculation of absolute fluxes, luminosities, and temperatures.
2) Y0 dwarfs were found to have temperatures of 400-450 K, significantly warmer than previous estimates, and masses of 5-20 times Jupiter's mass.
3) While having similar temperatures, Y dwarfs showed diverse spectral energy distributions, suggesting temperature alone does not determine spectra. Physical properties like gravity, clouds and chemistry also influence spectra.

A hexagon in Saturn’s northern stratosphere surrounding the emerging summerti...Sérgio Sacani
Saturn’s polar stratosphere exhibits the seasonal growth and dissipation of broad, warm
vortices poleward of ~75° latitude, which are strongest in the summer and absent in winter.
The longevity of the exploration of the Saturn system by Cassini allows the use of infrared
spectroscopy to trace the formation of the North Polar Stratospheric Vortex (NPSV), a region
of enhanced temperatures and elevated hydrocarbon abundances at millibar pressures. We
constrain the timescales of stratospheric vortex formation and dissipation in both hemispheres.
Although the NPSV formed during late northern spring, by the end of Cassini’s
reconnaissance (shortly after northern summer solstice), it still did not display the contrasts
in temperature and composition that were evident at the south pole during southern summer.
The newly formed NPSV was bounded by a strengthening stratospheric thermal gradient near
78°N. The emergent boundary was hexagonal, suggesting that the Rossby wave responsible
for Saturn’s long-lived polar hexagon—which was previously expected to be trapped in the
troposphere—can influence the stratospheric temperatures some 300 km above Saturn’s
clouds.
Detection of hydrogen sulfide above the clouds in Uranus’s atmosphereSérgio Sacani
Visible-to-near-infrared observations indicate that the cloud top of the main cloud deck on Uranus lies at a pressure level of
between 1.2 bar and 3 bar. However, its composition has never been unambiguously identified, although it is widely assumed
to be composed primarily of either ammonia or hydrogen sulfide (H2S) ice. Here, we present evidence of a clear detection of
gaseous H2S above this cloud deck in the wavelength region 1.57–1.59 μm with a mole fraction of 0.4–0.8 ppm at the cloud top.
Its detection constrains the deep bulk sulfur/nitrogen abundance to exceed unity (>4.4–5.0 times the solar value) in Uranus’s
bulk atmosphere, and places a lower limit on the mole fraction of H2S below the observed cloud of (1.0 2.5) × 10 5 − − . The detection
of gaseous H2S at these pressure levels adds to the weight of evidence that the principal constituent of 1.2–3-bar cloud is
likely to be H2S ice.

Evidence for widespread hydrated minerals on asteroid (101955) BennuSérgio Sacani
Early spectral data from the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRISREx) mission reveal evidence for abundant hydrated minerals on the surface of near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu in the
form of a near-infrared absorption near 2.7 µm and thermal infrared spectral features that are most similar to those of aqueously altered CM-type carbonaceous chondrites. We observe these spectral features across the surface of Bennu, and there
is no evidence of substantial rotational variability at the spatial scales of tens to hundreds of metres observed to date. In the
visible and near-infrared (0.4 to 2.4 µm) Bennu’s spectrum appears featureless and with a blue (negative) slope, confirming
previous ground-based observations. Bennu may represent a class of objects that could have brought volatiles and organic
chemistry to Earth.
JWST molecular mapping and characterization of Enceladus’ water plume feeding...Sérgio Sacani
Enceladus is a prime target in the search for life in our solar system, having an active plume
likely connected to a large liquid water subsurface ocean. Using the sensitive NIRSpec
instrument onboard JWST, we searched for organic compounds and characterized the plume’s
composition and structure. The observations directly sample the fluorescence emissions of H2O
and reveal an extraordinarily extensive plume (up to 10,000 km or 40 Enceladus radii) at
cryogenic temperatures (25 K) embedded in a large bath of emission originating from Enceladus'
torus. Intriguingly, the observed outgassing rate (300 kg/s) is similar to that derived from closeup observations with Cassini 15 years ago, and the torus density is consistent with previous
spatially unresolved measurements with Herschel 13 years ago, suggesting that the vigor of gas
eruption from Enceladus has been relatively stable over decadal timescales. This level of activity
is sufficient to maintain a derived column density of 4.5×1017 m-2 for the embedding equatorial
torus, and establishes Enceladus as the prime source of water across the Saturnian system. We
performed searches for several non-water gases (CO2, CO, CH4, C2H6, CH3OH), but none were
identified in the spectra. On the surface of the trailing hemisphere, we observe strong H2O ice
features, including its crystalline form, yet we do not recover CO2, CO nor NH3 ice signatures
from these observations. As we prepare to send new spacecraft into the outer solar system, these
observations demonstrate the unique ability of JWST in providing critical support to the
exploration of distant icy bodies and cryovolcanic plumes.
Thermally anomalous features in the subsurface of Enceladus’s south polar ter...Sérgio Sacani
Saturn’s moon Enceladus is an active world. In 2005, the
Cassini spacecraft witnessed for the first time water-rich
jets venting from four anomalously warm fractures (called
sulci) near its south pole1,2. Since then, several observations
have provided evidence that the source of the material
ejected from Enceladus is a large underground ocean, the
depth of which is still debated3–6. Here, we report on the first
and only opportunity that Cassini’s RADAR instrument7,8 had
to observe Enceladus’s south polar terrain closely, targeting
an area a few tens of kilometres north of the active sulci.
Detailed analysis of the microwave radiometry observations
highlights the ongoing activity of the moon. The instrument
recorded the microwave thermal emission, revealing a warm
subsurface region with prominent thermal anomalies that
had not been identified before. These anomalies coincide with
large fractures, similar or structurally related to the sulci. The
observations imply the presence of a broadly distributed heat
production and transport system below the south polar terrain
with ‘plate-like’ features and suggest that a liquid reservoir
could exist at a depth of only a few kilometres under the
ice shell at the south pole. The detection of a possible dormant
sulcus further suggests episodic geological activity.
A brightening of Jupiter’s auroral 7.8-μm CH4 emission during a solar-wind co...Sérgio Sacani
Enhanced mid-infrared emission from CH4 and other stratospheric hydrocarbons has been observed coincident with
Jupiter’s ultraviolet auroral emission1–3
. This suggests that
auroral processes and the neutral stratosphere of Jupiter
are coupled; however, the exact nature of this coupling is
unknown. Here we present a time series of Subaru-COMICS
images of Jupiter measured at a wavelength of 7.80 μm on
11–14 January, 4–5 February and 17–20 May 2017. These data
show that both the morphology and magnitude of the auroral
CH4 emission vary on daily timescales in relation to external
solar-wind conditions. The southern auroral CH4 emission
increased in brightness temperature by about 3.8 K between
15:50 ut, 11 January and 12:57 ut, 12 January, during a predicted solar-wind compression. During the same compression, the northern auroral emission exhibited a duskside
brightening, which mimics the morphology observed in the
ultraviolet auroral emission during periods of enhanced solarwind pressure4,5
. These results suggest that changes in external solar-wind conditions perturb the Jovian magnetosphere
in such a way that energetic particles are accelerated into the
planet’s atmosphere, deposit their energy as deep as the neutral stratosphere, and modify the thermal structure, the abundance of CH4 or the population of energy states of CH4. We
also find that the northern and southern auroral CH4 emission
evolved independently between the January, February and
May images, as has been observed at X-ray wavelengths over
shorter timescales6 and at mid-infrared wavelengths over longer timescales7

Evidence of a plume on Europa from Galileo magnetic and plasma wave signaturesSérgio Sacani
The icy surface of Jupiter’s moon, Europa, is thought to lie
on top of a global ocean1–4. Signatures in some Hubble Space
Telescope images have been associated with putative water
plumes rising above Europa’s surface5,6, providing support for
the ocean theory. However, all telescopic detections reported
were made at the limit of sensitivity of the data5–7
, thereby calling
for a search for plume signatures in in-situ measurements.
Here, we report in-situ evidence of a plume on Europa from
the magnetic field and plasma wave observations acquired on
Galileo’s closest encounter with the moon. During this flyby,
which dropped below 400 km altitude, the magnetometer8
recorded an approximately 1,000-kilometre-scale field rotation
and a decrease of over 200 nT in field magnitude, and
the Plasma Wave Spectrometer9 registered intense localized
wave emissions indicative of a brief but substantial increase

The document summarizes observations of water in Jupiter's stratosphere made by the Herschel Space Observatory. Herschel/HIFI obtained a 5x5 pixel map of a water emission line, finding that water decreases from southern to northern latitudes. Herschel/PACS also obtained water maps. Infrared Telescope Facility observations of methane were used to constrain stratospheric temperatures. The latitudinal distribution of water cannot be explained by temperature variations and rules out interplanetary dust as the main water source. The observations provide evidence that Jupiter's stratospheric water originated from the 1994 Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet impacts.
Using observations from the Very Large Telescope, astronomers have discovered a dense gas cloud approximately three times the mass of Earth that is falling towards the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way. The cloud is on a highly eccentric orbit that will bring it as close as 3,100 times the event horizon of the black hole in 2013. Over the past three years, the cloud has begun to disrupt due to tidal shearing from the black hole's gravitational forces, and its dynamic evolution over the next few years will provide insights into the black hole's accretion processes.
This document summarizes observations of the giant exoplanet τ Boötis b using high-resolution spectroscopy to detect carbon monoxide absorption in the planet's atmosphere. Key findings include:
1) The observations trace the planet's radial velocity over its orbit, determining an orbital inclination of 44.5±1.5 degrees and true planet mass of 5.95±0.28 Jupiter masses.
2) Carbon monoxide absorption indicates the planet's atmosphere has a temperature decreasing with altitude rather than a thermal inversion, contrasting with other highly irradiated planets.
3) This supports models where strong UV radiation from the active host star destroys compounds causing thermal inversions in other planets' atmospheres.
The document discusses brown dwarfs and how their infrared spectroscopic properties and evolution can be studied using IR and sub-mm spectroscopy. It covers topics like effective temperature over time for objects of different masses, atmospheric composition changes from M dwarf to T dwarf, formation of dust in brown dwarf atmospheres, non-equilibrium chemistry, dynamical transport processes, and 3D radiation hydrodynamics simulations of brown dwarf atmospheres.
Cryptanalysis of the GPRS Encryption Algorithms GEA-1 and GEA-2Anatol Alizar
The document analyzes cryptographic attacks on the GEA-1 and GEA-2 algorithms used to encrypt GPRS data. It finds that GEA-1 has a weakness allowing recovery of the initial state in 240 time using only 65 bits of known keystream. This weakness is very unlikely to occur by chance, indicating an intentional design to limit security to 40 bits for export regulations. For GEA-2, the document presents an attack requiring 245.1 time and 1600 bytes of known keystream to recover the state.
This document provides lecture notes on analytic geometry. It begins with an introduction discussing the goals of building an algebraic geometry framework for analytic situations by replacing topological abelian groups with condensed abelian groups. Condensed sets are defined as sheaves on the pro-étale site of the point, and behave like generalized topological spaces. The notes establish that quasiseparated condensed sets correspond to ind-compact Hausdorff spaces. This provides the needed abelian category structure to build an analytic geometry in parallel to algebraic geometry over schemes.
This document summarizes the solution of a cryptosystem involving unrelated cipher alphabets. There are 25 different cipher alphabets available. The plain text is encrypted by substituting each plaintext letter with the corresponding letter from the cipher alphabets, which may be used in the same or different sequences and orders. Once the 25 cipher alphabets are reconstructed by analyzing encrypted texts, subsequent messages can be easily solved even if the alphabets are used in a different order.

The UK intelligence and security agencies assess the threat from international terrorism in the UK as severe, meaning an attack is highly likely. This threat is predominantly driven by Daesh, which seeks to maintain its narrative of success despite military losses, and retains some territory. Daesh continues to prioritize and incite external attacks against the West through extremist propaganda. Since March 2017 there have been three successful terror attacks and several disrupted plots in the UK, reflecting a shift in the nature and scale of extremist attack planning. While Al-Qaeda also remains a threat, Daesh's extremist narrative has emerged as the main driver of radicalization and terrorism in the UK.
Libratus is an AI developed by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University that achieved superhuman performance at no-limit Texas hold'em poker by defeating top human professionals in a 120,000-hand poker competition. It uses a three-part approach: 1) It computes an abstraction of the full game to develop a "blueprint" strategy for early rounds; 2) When later rounds are reached, it constructs finer-grained abstractions in real-time and solves them while ensuring strategies fit the overall blueprint; 3) It enhances the blueprint by adding missing branches and strategies based on opponents' actual moves. This game-theoretic approach uses application-independent techniques and marks the first time an AI has defeated humans at this

This order grants in part and denies in part Facebook's motion to dismiss claims brought by BladeRoom Group Limited and Bripco. The plaintiffs allege that Facebook and Emerson Electric enticed them to reveal confidential data center designs and construction methods with promises of partnership, but then misappropriated those designs for their own use. The order finds that most, but not all, of the plaintiffs' claims withstand a Rule 12(b)(6) review, so it grants the motion to dismiss in part and denies it in part.

Global booking systems store travel data from airlines and passengers. They include price and availability rules as well as personal reservation information. Three dominant global distribution systems (GDS) are Amadeus, Sabre, and Galileo. Security protections for these systems are minimal, with coarse access controls, weak authentication methods, and a lack of basic security controls like rate limiting and logging. This exposes private traveler information and leaves the systems vulnerable to fraud and privacy abuse.

This document reports on radio and X-ray observations of FRB 121102, the only known repeating fast radio burst source. Six additional radio bursts from FRB 121102 were detected - five with the Green Bank Telescope at 2 GHz and one with the Arecibo Observatory at 1.4 GHz, bringing the total detected bursts from this source to 17. X-ray observations from Swift and Chandra show at least one possible counterpart, but the probability of chance superposition is high. Radio imaging with the VLA places an upper limit on any continuum emission at the location. The repeating nature of FRB 121102 indicates that at least some FRBs originate from a repeating phenomenon and not a cataclysmic event.

The Hamburg District Court dismissed a claim brought by Spiegel Online GmbH against Eyeo GmbH, the developer of the Adblock Plus browser extension. Spiegel Online alleged that Adblock Plus violated competition law by blocking most of the ads on Spiegel Online's websites, while allowing ads on some sites that paid a fee. The court found that since Spiegel Online did not implement technical measures to only provide its content and ads together as a unified offering, Eyeo was not violating its rights by blocking some ads. Eyeo argued its fee structure and whitelisting process were justified based on administrative costs. The court ruled in favor of Eyeo and dismissed the claim.
EWOCS-I: The catalog of X-ray sources in Westerlund 1 from the Extended Weste...Sérgio Sacani
Context. With a mass exceeding several 104 M⊙ and a rich and dense population of massive stars, supermassive young star clusters
represent the most massive star-forming environment that is dominated by the feedback from massive stars and gravitational interactions
among stars.
Aims. In this paper we present the Extended Westerlund 1 and 2 Open Clusters Survey (EWOCS) project, which aims to investigate
the influence of the starburst environment on the formation of stars and planets, and on the evolution of both low and high mass stars.
The primary targets of this project are Westerlund 1 and 2, the closest supermassive star clusters to the Sun.
Methods. The project is based primarily on recent observations conducted with the Chandra and JWST observatories. Specifically,
the Chandra survey of Westerlund 1 consists of 36 new ACIS-I observations, nearly co-pointed, for a total exposure time of 1 Msec.
Additionally, we included 8 archival Chandra/ACIS-S observations. This paper presents the resulting catalog of X-ray sources within
and around Westerlund 1. Sources were detected by combining various existing methods, and photon extraction and source validation
were carried out using the ACIS-Extract software.
Results. The EWOCS X-ray catalog comprises 5963 validated sources out of the 9420 initially provided to ACIS-Extract, reaching a
photon flux threshold of approximately 2 × 10−8 photons cm−2

. The X-ray sources exhibit a highly concentrated spatial distribution,
with 1075 sources located within the central 1 arcmin. We have successfully detected X-ray emissions from 126 out of the 166 known
massive stars of the cluster, and we have collected over 71 000 photons from the magnetar CXO J164710.20-455217.
Unlocking the mysteries of reproduction: Exploring fecundity and gonadosomati...AbdullaAlAsif1
The pygmy halfbeak Dermogenys colletei, is known for its viviparous nature, this presents an intriguing case of relatively low fecundity, raising questions about potential compensatory reproductive strategies employed by this species. Our study delves into the examination of fecundity and the Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) in the Pygmy Halfbeak, D. colletei (Meisner, 2001), an intriguing viviparous fish indigenous to Sarawak, Borneo. We hypothesize that the Pygmy halfbeak, D. colletei, may exhibit unique reproductive adaptations to offset its low fecundity, thus enhancing its survival and fitness. To address this, we conducted a comprehensive study utilizing 28 mature female specimens of D. colletei, carefully measuring fecundity and GSI to shed light on the reproductive adaptations of this species. Our findings reveal that D. colletei indeed exhibits low fecundity, with a mean of 16.76 ± 2.01, and a mean GSI of 12.83 ± 1.27, providing crucial insights into the reproductive mechanisms at play in this species. These results underscore the existence of unique reproductive strategies in D. colletei, enabling its adaptation and persistence in Borneo's diverse aquatic ecosystems, and call for further ecological research to elucidate these mechanisms. This study lends to a better understanding of viviparous fish in Borneo and contributes to the broader field of aquatic ecology, enhancing our knowledge of species adaptations to unique ecological challenges.
The debris of the ‘last major merger’ is dynamically youngSérgio Sacani
The Milky Way’s (MW) inner stellar halo contains an [Fe/H]-rich component with highly eccentric orbits, often referred to as the
‘last major merger.’ Hypotheses for the origin of this component include Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus (GSE), where the progenitor
collided with the MW proto-disc 8–11 Gyr ago, and the Virgo Radial Merger (VRM), where the progenitor collided with the
MW disc within the last 3 Gyr. These two scenarios make different predictions about observable structure in local phase space,
because the morphology of debris depends on how long it has had to phase mix. The recently identified phase-space folds in Gaia
DR3 have positive caustic velocities, making them fundamentally different than the phase-mixed chevrons found in simulations
at late times. Roughly 20 per cent of the stars in the prograde local stellar halo are associated with the observed caustics. Based
on a simple phase-mixing model, the observed number of caustics are consistent with a merger that occurred 1–2 Gyr ago.
We also compare the observed phase-space distribution to FIRE-2 Latte simulations of GSE-like mergers, using a quantitative
measurement of phase mixing (2D causticality). The observed local phase-space distribution best matches the simulated data
1–2 Gyr after collision, and certainly not later than 3 Gyr. This is further evidence that the progenitor of the ‘last major merger’
did not collide with the MW proto-disc at early times, as is thought for the GSE, but instead collided with the MW disc within
the last few Gyr, consistent with the body of work surrounding the VRM.

When I was asked to give a companion lecture in support of ‘The Philosophy of Science’ (https://shorturl.at/4pUXz) I decided not to walk through the detail of the many methodologies in order of use. Instead, I chose to employ a long standing, and ongoing, scientific development as an exemplar. And so, I chose the ever evolving story of Thermodynamics as a scientific investigation at its best.
Conducted over a period of >200 years, Thermodynamics R&D, and application, benefitted from the highest levels of professionalism, collaboration, and technical thoroughness. New layers of application, methodology, and practice were made possible by the progressive advance of technology. In turn, this has seen measurement and modelling accuracy continually improved at a micro and macro level.
Perhaps most importantly, Thermodynamics rapidly became a primary tool in the advance of applied science/engineering/technology, spanning micro-tech, to aerospace and cosmology. I can think of no better a story to illustrate the breadth of scientific methodologies and applications at their best.
Deep Behavioral Phenotyping in Systems Neuroscience for Functional Atlasing a...Ana Luísa Pinho
Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) provides means to characterize brain activations in response to behavior. However, cognitive neuroscience has been limited to group-level effects referring to the performance of specific tasks. To obtain the functional profile of elementary cognitive mechanisms, the combination of brain responses to many tasks is required. Yet, to date, both structural atlases and parcellation-based activations do not fully account for cognitive function and still present several limitations. Further, they do not adapt overall to individual characteristics. In this talk, I will give an account of deep-behavioral phenotyping strategies, namely data-driven methods in large task-fMRI datasets, to optimize functional brain-data collection and improve inference of effects-of-interest related to mental processes. Key to this approach is the employment of fast multi-functional paradigms rich on features that can be well parametrized and, consequently, facilitate the creation of psycho-physiological constructs to be modelled with imaging data. Particular emphasis will be given to music stimuli when studying high-order cognitive mechanisms, due to their ecological nature and quality to enable complex behavior compounded by discrete entities. I will also discuss how deep-behavioral phenotyping and individualized models applied to neuroimaging data can better account for the subject-specific organization of domain-general cognitive systems in the human brain. Finally, the accumulation of functional brain signatures brings the possibility to clarify relationships among tasks and create a univocal link between brain systems and mental functions through: (1) the development of ontologies proposing an organization of cognitive processes; and (2) brain-network taxonomies describing functional specialization. To this end, tools to improve commensurability in cognitive science are necessary, such as public repositories, ontology-based platforms and automated meta-analysis tools. I will thus discuss some brain-atlasing resources currently under development, and their applicability in cognitive as well as clinical neuroscience.
Phenomics assisted breeding in crop improvementIshaGoswami9
As the population is increasing and will reach about 9 billion upto 2050. Also due to climate change, it is difficult to meet the food requirement of such a large population. Facing the challenges presented by resource shortages, climate
change, and increasing global population, crop yield and quality need to be improved in a sustainable way over the coming decades. Genetic improvement by breeding is the best way to increase crop productivity. With the rapid progression of functional
genomics, an increasing number of crop genomes have been sequenced and dozens of genes influencing key agronomic traits have been identified. However, current genome sequence information has not been adequately exploited for understanding
the complex characteristics of multiple gene, owing to a lack of crop phenotypic data. Efficient, automatic, and accurate technologies and platforms that can capture phenotypic data that can
be linked to genomics information for crop improvement at all growth stages have become as important as genotyping. Thus,
high-throughput phenotyping has become the major bottleneck restricting crop breeding. Plant phenomics has been defined as the high-throughput, accurate acquisition and analysis of multi-dimensional phenotypes
during crop growing stages at the organism level, including the cell, tissue, organ, individual plant, plot, and field levels. With the rapid development of novel sensors, imaging technology,
and analysis methods, numerous infrastructure platforms have been developed for phenotyping.
The binding of cosmological structures by massless topological defectsSérgio Sacani
Assuming spherical symmetry and weak field, it is shown that if one solves the Poisson equation or the Einstein field
equations sourced by a topological defect, i.e. a singularity of a very specific form, the result is a localized gravitational
field capable of driving flat rotation (i.e. Keplerian circular orbits at a constant speed for all radii) of test masses on a thin
spherical shell without any underlying mass. Moreover, a large-scale structure which exploits this solution by assembling
concentrically a number of such topological defects can establish a flat stellar or galactic rotation curve, and can also deflect
light in the same manner as an equipotential (isothermal) sphere. Thus, the need for dark matter or modified gravity theory is
mitigated, at least in part.
