Seminar on how to cope with a journal rejection 11 march 2017Aboul Ella Hassanien
I find rejection — and even negative review comments associated with major revisions — very difficult. I have put months or years of my best work into a project, spent days or weeks writing it up, submitted it to a journal, pinned hopes on it, and waited for months for a response. And then they say it is not good enough! I can totally understand why you are feeling so unhappy. The aim of the seminar is to discuss the way to deal with a journal rejection and how to write a professional rebuttal letter.

A Discrete Krill Herd Optimization Algorithm for Community DetectionAboul Ella Hassanien
The document proposes a discrete krill herd optimization algorithm for community detection in complex social networks. It introduces the motivation and challenges of community detection. The proposed approach adapts the krill herd algorithm domain to represent community structures using modularity as the objective function. Experimental results on four benchmark networks show the algorithm achieves good accuracy and high modularity, particularly for small to medium networks. Future work aims to improve performance on large networks through hybrid approaches.

Gabor filter is a powerful way to enhance biometric images like fingerprint images in order to extract correct features from these images, Gabor filter used in extracting features directly asin iris images, and sometimes Gabor filter has been used for texture analysis. In fingerprint images The even symmetric Gabor filter is contextual filter or multi-resolution filter will be used to enhance fingerprint imageby filling small gaps (low-pass effect) in the direction of the ridge (black regions) and to increase the discrimination between ridge and valley (black and white regions) in the direction, orthogonal to the ridge, the proposed method in applying Gabor filter on fingerprint images depending on translated fingerprint image into binary image after applying some simple enhancing methods to partially overcome time consuming problem of the Gabor filter.
Liver ct image segmentation with an optimum threshold using measure of fuzzin...Aboul Ella Hassanien
The document summarizes a study on segmenting liver CT images using an optimal threshold calculated from a measure of fuzziness. The study proposes using fuzzy c-means clustering with this threshold (FCM-t) to assign ambiguous pixels to clusters. Results show FCM-t had a significantly higher Jaccard Index than traditional FCM, though it took more processing power. Visual analysis found FCM-t sometimes better revealed the ground truth segmentation.
This document discusses unsupervised machine learning classification through clustering. It defines clustering as the process of grouping similar items together, with high intra-cluster similarity and low inter-cluster similarity. The document outlines common clustering algorithms like K-means and hierarchical clustering, and describes how K-means works by assigning points to centroids and iteratively updating centroids. It also discusses applications of clustering in domains like marketing, astronomy, genomics and more.
Age verification in real time keeping children safe online biometric solutionAboul Ella Hassanien
This document discusses using biometric technology for age verification to keep children safe online. It proposes integrating biometric verification into social networks and communication platforms to distinguish real children from predators posing as children. The key biometric discussed is ultrasound measurement of bone density in the hand, which can accurately estimate a user's age group. Integrating this approach could filter contacts and interactions on social networks to ensure children only communicate with other verified children or parent-approved contacts.
Application of swarm intelligence optimization in biomedical Aboul Ella Hassanien
The document summarizes a presentation on applying swarm intelligence optimization algorithms to biomedical applications. Specifically, it discusses using these algorithms to help predict epileptic seizures by analyzing electroencephalogram (EEG) data. The presentation introduces swarm algorithms and machine learning, describes how EEG data is used to detect epilepsy, and proposes a model for feature engineering of EEG data using swarm intelligence to help classify signals as normal or abnormal and predict seizures.
This is an instance of fabrication. Abo created fake data and reports about preliminary studies that were never actually conducted.
The consequences could include retraction of any publications containing the fabricated data, loss of funding, loss of job or position, loss of trust and credibility in the research community, and possible legal or institutional sanctions.
To avoid this situation, Abo should have been upfront with the grant agency that preliminary studies had not yet been conducted, but that he believed his proposed methods would be successful based on related work and scientific rationale. He could have requested pilot or feasibility funding to conduct initial studies before applying for a larger grant. Fabricating data is never acceptable.
