Upper Austria has hundreds of passive buildings constructed in recent years, including homes, offices, and public buildings. Passive buildings use little energy for heating through high insulation, airtightness, and avoiding thermal bridges. Common characteristics include high insulation, prevention of thermal bridges, airtightness, solar orientation, efficient windows, and heat recovery ventilation. Upper Austrian examples showcased include the first music school and exhibition center built to passive standards.
PASSIVE HOUSE - BUILDING ON SOLID FOUNDATIONS UK & IRELANDEd O'Donoghue
This is an overview of the main issues and solutions for building foundations and floors for that satisfy the Passive House standard. The issues and solutions presented are relevant to the UK and Ireland markets for both masonry and timber frame projects. This presentation was featured at the International Passive House Conference in Darmstadt Germany in April 2016.
The presentation introduced the Passive House concept and its application for new dwellings, renovation and in office buildings. The market for Passive Houses is set for rapid growth. A market overview is given in a European context.

Michael was one of 12 Americans that was invited to participate in the Engaging Coal Communities Tour of Berlin, Lausitz, and North Rhine-Westphalia Visitor Program hosted by the Heinrich Boell Foundation in November 2016. He had a terrific opportunity to see the lignite and hard coal regions of Germany and learned about their “just transition” away from fossil fuels and into renewable energy. The group had the opportunity to speak to government officials, power industry representatives, labor union representatives, local mayors, councilmen and foundation representatives about how communities, industry, and government worked together to make sure that their coal miners and mining landscapes were not left behind in the transition but were made to prosper and become centers for innovation and recreation.

2. Upper Austria, the number 1 region for passive buildings
In Upper Austria, hundreds of passive buildings were constructed in the past years, including homes, public
buildings, office buildings, services and industry buildings, supermarkets and even churches! The activities of
individuals, companies, public bodies and politicians, of the O.Oe. Energiesparverand and the Oekoenergie-
Cluster (the network for green energy businesses in Upper Austria) have resulted in innovative, highly efficient
and comfortable buildings around the region. The Upper Austrian boom for passive buildings was boosted by
the “Wohnbauförderung“ (sustainable housing programme), the energy technology programme (ETP) and
the energy award of Upper Austria “Energie-Star“. Leading planners of passive buildings and suppliers of
components are partner of the “Oekoenergie-Cluster“ network. They can be found at: www.oec.at
Buildings in passive house standard
Passive houses are buildings where a comfortable indoor temperature is maintained by the “passive“ use of
insolation and heat output of appliances and occupants – therefore the name “passive building“. Passive buil-
dings need only 1/5 of the space heating compared to conventionally built new houses. Usually, a small scale
heating is sufficient to cover the remaining heat demand. Advantages of passive buildings are a constantly
good room air quality in combination with energy savings and lower energy costs.
Common characteristics:
• very high insulation standards
• prevention of thermal bridges
• high level of airtightness
• orientation to the south, solar shading
• high-efficient windows
• mechanical ventilation with heat recovery
• objective: end energy demand for heating, hot water and electric appliances 42 kWh/m2 per year
