Writing to Compare & Contrast discusses the purpose and essential elements of comparison and contrast writing. The key points are:
1) Comparison and contrast writing helps understand subjects in relation to each other and aids in evaluation, learning, and decision making.
2) The main organizational patterns are point-by-point and subject-by-subject.
3) Effective transitions that show similarities or differences are important to guide the reader.
This document provides guidance on writing a cause and effect essay. It explains that the purpose is to identify relationships and uncover causes or effects of an event or situation. It recommends selecting a topic, determining the purpose and audience, drafting a thesis statement, conducting research to gather evidence, and determining which causes matter most. It provides examples of organizing the essay around multiple causes and a single effect, a single cause and multiple effects, or a causal chain. Finally, it offers words to use to connect reasons and results in the essay.
This document provides an overview of comma rules and usage. It discusses using commas to separate clauses and items in a series, setting off non-essential elements of a sentence, and shifting between discourse and quotations. The document also reviews clause and sentence types as well as when to use commas with coordinate adjectives.
The document discusses the rhetorical situation, which includes the audience, purpose, and process of communication. It defines rhetoric as using language to persuade, inform, educate, or entertain. The rhetorical situation considers the circumstances of communication. When writing, the writer, audience, purpose, and topic must be considered. The audience is analyzed in detail. The purpose can be to express, explore, entertain, inform, argue, evaluate, or mediate. Choosing and focusing the topic is also covered. Finally, planning and other considerations like the assignment and sources are discussed.
The document discusses sentence variety and how using different sentence structures, lengths, and rhythms can improve writing. It provides examples of how to combine simple sentences into more complex sentences using techniques like combining independent and dependent clauses with transitions, beginning sentences with adverbs or prepositional phrases, and joining ideas with -ing, -ed verbs, appositives, and relative clauses. Using sentence variety creates better flow and makes writing more mature.
Franz Kafka was a German-speaking Jewish writer born in 1883 in Prague. He worked as a lawyer but felt constrained by the routine of his job. He had a difficult relationship with his overbearing father. Kafka's most famous work, The Metamorphosis, was published in 1915 and tells the story of Gregor Samsa, who wakes up transformed into a large insect. Though the type of insect is unclear, it is meant to represent something lowly and vermin-like. As an insect, Gregor becomes isolated and unable to communicate or integrate into society. His family treats him as a nuisance and burden.
This document discusses division and classification. Division breaks things down into subunits, like dividing New York into sections for natives, commuters, and transplants. Classification places items into categories, like putting animals into the mammal category. When planning an essay, division and classification can be used to determine categories and organize the essay. The thesis should present the categories that will be used, such as dividing stereo shoppers into those focused on looks, wattage, price, or quality.
