How to Use Social Media to Strengthen our Youth - LDS VersionKen Krogue
I currently volunteer in a position for my church in a position called Ward Mission Leader. A ward is a small local congregation of about 100 families.
This powerpoint presentation is for a training session I am doing for 200 adult leaders in the Alpine North Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on how to use Social Media to work with the youth.
This presentation does not represent the LDS Church, but is my own views and ideas.
I also help curate a blog called WardMissionLeader.com which gives additional insights for members of the LDS church to improve their ability to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.

What people really want - how #HumanCenteredDesign can help your charity or c...Patrick Olszowski
I was due on stage in 10 minutes and I was totally uncertain if I could do it.
This was me yesterday before I was due to speak at Charity Comms' Psychology of Communications conference.
My entire presentation was a risk. I was going to ask the audience of senior charity sector leaders to do things that I was pretty sure they would find difficult.
I would be rewarding those who worked with me and doing my utmost to persuade others, again and again, who were not yet ready to get involved.
The last time I had presented publicly was in front of an audience of people I knew well. But this was different. Would it work? I had no idea.
Eventually, I went on, starting with a line about how working for yourself is like being a solo polar explorer. Moments of incredible beauty, followed by realising you are surrounded by deep crevasses. I got a laugh and relaxed.
Throughout, people shared their views on the charity sector, by moving up and down an imaginary line in the auditorium - depending on propositions I gave them (and the reactions of other audience members).
I ran another experiment, trialling seven different approaches to get people to sign up to my email newsletter - Top Tips for Tough Problems - all about innovation and charities (www.outrageousimpact.co.uk/tips/)
For those who wouldn't join the email, and were open to it, I had discussions with them on the microphone about what might persuade them. The ability to alter the frequency of emails, sharing this content on LinkedIn and being clearer about what was in the email, persuaded a few.
In the end, 60% of the audience joined the email list and received sweets, a chance to sit in a 'winners' circle', got their name on a plaque on the wall, approval from colleagues, applause and more.
Innovation is about building something new to try and improve lives. It might work. Or flop. But as long as you learn from it, it can never be a failure. That was the key lesson I got yesterday.
This is the presentation you find here.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Slide 1: Title: Exploring the Mindfulness: Understanding Its Benefits
Slide 2: Introduction to Mindfulness
Mindfulness, defined as the conscious, non-judgmental observation of the present moment, has deep roots in Buddhist meditation practice but has gained significant popularity in the Western world in recent years. In today's society, filled with distractions and constant stimuli, mindfulness offers a valuable tool for regaining inner peace and reconnecting with our true selves. By cultivating mindfulness, we can develop a heightened awareness of our thoughts, feelings, and surroundings, leading to a greater sense of clarity and presence in our daily lives.

Mindfulness increases awareness of our emotions and teaches us to manage them better, leading to improved mood.
Regular mindfulness practice can improve our ability to concentrate and focus our attention on the present moment.
Slide 4: Benefits of Mindfulness for Physical Health
Research has shown that practicing mindfulness can contribute to lowering blood pressure, which is beneficial for heart health.
Regular meditation and mindfulness practice can strengthen the immune system, aiding the body in fighting infections.
Mindfulness may help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and obesity by reducing stress and improving overall lifestyle habits.
Slide 5: Impact of Mindfulness on Relationships
Mindfulness can help us better understand others and improve communication, leading to healthier relationships.
By focusing on the present moment and being fully attentive, mindfulness helps build stronger and more authentic connections with others.
Mindfulness teaches us how to be present for others in difficult times, leading to increased compassion and understanding.
Slide 6: Mindfulness Techniques and Practices
Focusing on the breath and mindful breathing can be a simple way to enter a state of mindfulness.
Body scan meditation involves focusing on different parts of the body, paying attention to any sensations and feelings.
Practicing mindful walking and eating involves consciously focusing on each step or bite, with full attention to sensory experiences.

3. Key Verse for Today:
Key Verse: “The person who refuses
to love doesn’t know the first thing
about God, because God is love – so
you can’t know him if you don’t
love.” 1 John 4:8 (MSG)
4. Jesus is…
• … and therefore we are called to be…
Passionate.
• Psalm 69:9.
• Passion for your house has consumed me, and
the insults of those who insult you have fallen
on me.

30. Love our neighbour as ourselves?
“…Out of a commitment to an ideal
of Christian relatedness that sees us
all as God’s children, each worthy of
attention and care.” (p.145)
Where is the balance between conserving our
sanity/deeper relationships, and ensuring that all feel
valued? What about friendship ‘clearouts’?

Here is the heart of it.
The more you tell the
story of Jesus and pray
for his Spirit, the more
you discover what the
church should be doing

44. Are we only giving from our
excess?
• “The question is whether
practical love and a high-
consumption lifestyle are
compatible… or whether we must
choose.” (Matt 10:17-27)
48. Martin Luther King

step in faith. You

staircase, just take
the first step.” -

The best people in the
world aren’t those who
never fail – but those who
fail and learn something
from it. I hope that your
goal in life isn’t to slide
safely into death
not having screwed up
much.
50. Some good advice from @ianaspin:
Care for others - genuinely
Know that the world doesn’t revolve around you
Be ‘remarkable’, be different
Earn the right to have others take notice of you
Be grateful if ONE person cares what you’re doing
Have something to say that matters
Do stuff that matters – make an impact
Strive to bring value to everyone you connect with
Be fantastically generous with our time, money, and kindness
Be outrageously committed to making the world better
It’s all about relationships – build & nurture them
Thanks @ianaspin (http://bigbible.org.uk/2010/10/the-eleven-commandments/)
To those of you who are not familiar with Twitter – it’s a series of 140 character messages which gives great opportunities to connect/build relationships with those who are interested in similar things to you. Image: Screenshot
Today’s key verse suggested by Spring Harvest is … are we SEEING, HEARING, EXPERIENCING… if not .. If we’re not being refilled from the source, how can we share with others (in any space?)
We’ve already talked about being ‘passionate’ about what you do, and who you serve, and how you might communicate that …
Don’t forget also want words… though are many essays re balance between e.g. social action/sharing the gospel…
How are we equipped to live out the gospels/speak up online… what do we do to bring ‘good news’ to the world… especially loving others.. “ Can we live, today, as if that world were here already?”
Let’s not talk to each other only – what happens when we step out..
One big campaign this year … 2 mins
2 mins
Couldn’t really get a signal there … but took photos and put them straight up on Facebook & shared with others.. Since looking out for opportunities to share more content.
See also: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIMSpEJoqUw
Think – what would William Wilberforce have achieved in age of Twitter? Would it have been enough (pros/cons)
Saw a suggestion to get a Facebook petition going … but another friend decided to go straight to Head of Corp Resp.. Which do you think is more likely to make a difference? Petitions have their place, but..
Which have seemed positive? Which not? Which have pushed you to action? Chat and create a sketch for a campaign that’s on your heart…
Petition sites, etc.
Tearfund’s first bloggers trip – from perspective of Tearfund supporters, knowing what would appeal to those in the UK - Looking for us to be ourselves, different range of voices, free to say whatever…
Looking to talk to people before we went to build interest – released press release, etc..
Range of stories – shared them throughout the day afterwards as we weren’t able to live-tweet…
Also Dave Walker … really interesting how hard found it to ‘cartoon’ … felt disrespectful…
Liz – ordinand in training – real interest in research, development & women’s issues…
How do our actions/behavior make us ‘ recognisably Christian ’ – standing as counter-culture, not sub-culture? Think about times on your TIMELINE (you know kind of thing – marriage, etc. – that stand out – could potentially be a ‘hook’ for conversation) … 2 mins to write the top 10 things in your life – can add throughout … just for you! Take some time to think about your life – can see from my FB timeline that it shows everything … so people can see the whole of my actions… but can also select ‘Highlights’ – what might your storyline look like – for time purposes – highlights!
Couple of ‘bigger’ projects – this one a one-man plan… has grown – though determined it will only be for the year…
3 rd year of @40Acts .. Simple daily acts/reflection, etc.
Think about what is possible with this – one of the benefits of not seeing someone ’ s face is can be easier to speak out against some more difficult things… ask more difficult questions, etc.. If can encourage people to encourage each other, check in, note that they ’ re praying for each other, etc. (normalising their faith also..) DM/PM – spaces in which personal support can be offered, niche groups can share more – e.g. depression, child loss, etc. – not geographically separated.
Question of time commitment – give 2-3 minutes to discuss the question – again no right/wrong answers, but possibilities for engaging without getting lost in the technology – ensure that you are its master rather than its slave… DISCUSS Mission should not be a guilt-response “done my quota today” to make ourselves feel better. Jesus: “Everyone you choose to love. Everyone you come across and choose not to ignore. Everyone God sends you. Everyone. The need to give sacrificially. Early church – was notable for its social care – looking not only after their own poor, but all … HOW DO WE DEAL WITH THE FOLLOWING 2 ISSUES FROM A CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE?
We do need to think about how we ’ re going to deal with particular cases of cyber-bullying, and “ cries for help ” – have to be taken seriously but can ’ t put the responsibility all on one person... Again, this is a developing area, but I would look for churches to think about what they would do in such situations, and have specific people to contact (should be part of their overall policy, but social media maybe makes it easier for people to engage in these activities).
Cyber-bullying is one of the things that raises most fears … again, need to talk to kids about what constitutes bullying, etc. Raise awareness, give space to speak out – being aware that this can spread much faster, and invade the home in ways that previously bullying couldn’t…. Nancy Willard stuff about actually media causing a problem by over-egging stories of cyber-bullying… we need to step in, but gives people permission to feel ‘everyone does it’, or that it’s just something that has to be endured…
Do with others – accountability…
Also need to take time out to refresh ourselves … learn to delegate, learn to manage our time online, etc.. What can see as pros/cons of this? DISCUSS
How can we use online spaces to share the burden/collaborate, etc. http://www.rgbstock.com/download/fishmonk/miaHgsm.jpg
E.g. finding others with similar interests, experiences – sharing those online, making it easier to get together…
Also opportunity for another of my hobby horses – getting out of the ivory tower – can share Bible comments – live in a webinar, then afterwards in recordings, etc..
The church serves Jesus, not v.versa – as does social media – what does LOVE look like online? How do we KNOW that you are a Christian online? Do you have to tell us in e.g. your bio/tweets, or is there a way it’s obvious?
e.g. See what JP has been doing…
We have no idea if this writer is a Christian … but his letter has gone round Facebook, with lots of agreement (at least amongst those I know!)
Options to give = much easier – and we can all give more smaller donations, and they don’t cost the charities so much in admin … [think also text giving, etc.] Also Justgiving, VirginMoney, etc… - different charities may use different things – be clear about which are taking a cut…
How do we make ethical choices about our technology use/replacement/companies, etc. DISCUSS? Big topic… http://www.rgbstock.com/photo/mgyW0jS/communication+4
This question a real challenge for me… DISCUSS?
Freecycle et al – give away your goods – e.g. half packets of things which even charity shops can’t take… can have some interesting chats with people as give goods over too! Stops waste so good for ‘living lightly’ in the world too…
What about sharing skills, etc. …
Give away your time…
Don’t feel overwhelmed… start somewhere…
AND REMEMBER… (famous author of Boundaries) Online – tend to experiment a lot – it doesn’t all work, but we need to blaze a trail, that others can build upon…
2.5 years ago Ian Aspin said this – still think correct – what would your 10 commandments re engaging online be?
These I WOULD like to share… http://www.freebibleimages.org/illustrations/moses-sinai/
Give away your knowledge…
Come join us … love to get more contributors AND more people commenting..
Final word – remember – there is always a human being at the other end of the keyboard… think before you type… Questions?
