SPEECH WRITING FOR SPECIAL PURPOSES
What is a Speech Writing?
Speech writing is an art that should be
developed well enough to meet certain social
designs and demands in human society.
There are different kinds of occasions in
which speeches could be delivered to serve
different purposes.
TYPES OF A SPEECH
1. Inaugural Speech
2.Welcome Speech
3.Send-off speech
4.Valedictory speech
FEATURES OF A SPEECH
1. TITLE: The title must capture the following:
a. The name of the speech writer.
b.Position held in a group, e.g. president, head
boy, e.t.c.
c. The name of association or group that the speaker
represents.
d.The momentous occasion in which the speech is
delivered.
e.The setting or venue for occasion.
f.The date of the event. E.g.

COLLEGE,ISHERI, LAGOS, ON THE OCCASION OF

2. SALUTATION: After the title, the next step in the
structure of a speech is that of salutation where the
speaker acknowledges the presence of dignitaries
present at the occasion. Protocol demands that the
eminence of the dignitaries be taken into cognizance
in identifying them. Therefore, the speaker should
start from the highest to the least.
E. g.
The Chairperson,
Board of Directors,
The principal,
Members of the High Table,
Distinguished Guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen:
3. INRODUCTION: Introduce your reason for
summoning them, probably using an appropriate
proverb or quote. E. g. “The end of a thing is better than
the beginning thereof”.
4. BODY: In the body of the speech, you need to come
up with cogent points or view that you have already
taken.
5. CLOSING:
a. End your speech with Thank You.
b. Append your full name and the designation at the
end.
E.g. Alegbeleye Daniella,
Head Girl.
CLASS WORK
Write a suitable title and a salutation for the
following speech:
There was a riot in your school in which school
property and the principal’s car were damaged.
As the Head prefect of your school, address the
school management condemning this act.
