Specimen processing begins with samples and a request form arriving in a small plastic bag at the laboratory. The specimens are given a laboratory number which is placed as a label on the tubes and form. Nurses and doctors generally have patients tested daily with blood counts and chemistry profiles. These samples undergo an early morning run by phlebotomists so results are available in patient charts for physicians' morning rounds. All specimens must be labeled with the patient's full name, unique identifier, date of birth, time of collection, collector's initials, and details for any cultures. Most test results are provided within 24 hours except for microbiology.
