Discussion: Academic Values and Professional Ethics - A Comparison
The first sentence of the Preamble to the Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Workers states that “the primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people...” (NASW, 2008). This statement very much aligns with the Walden University mission that as an institution “…provides a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can effect positive social change” (Walden University, 2013). Social workers are often called change agents as they address the needs of marginalized and oppressed groups, by enacting change on many different levels. How might Walden University’s mission and vision compliment the social work code of ethics? How might you be able to meld the two together to become your own social change agent?

· Discussion: Community Social Work
When was the last time you drove through an unfamiliar neighborhood or community? How quickly did you identify that area as a “good” or “bad” part of town? What led you to that assessment? It is easy to label a community or town based on its appearance or reputation alone. Have you ever wondered, as you drove through certain communities, why some areas appear to be safe, clean, and filled with many varied businesses, while others appear run-down and lined with only check cashing centers, fast-food restaurants, and liquor stores? As a macro social worker, you often will see that communities thrive and falter due to the lack of resources available. Additionally, these areas may not grow or prosper because their resources have been untapped. Identifying strengths—be it in your individual clients, groups, families, and communities—is a key social work value. Use of this strengths perspective helps you to identify the potential strengths of a community and how to advocate for its members to obtain the resources and services they need to be successful.
For this Discussion, review this week’s Resources. Reflect on a community with which you are familiar and that is in close proximity to you. Then, consider the population and geographical characteristics of that community, as well as its strengths and challenges. Take pictures of the community that represent the characteristics you identified. Finally, think about how these challenges you identified might be viewed as a strength for that community.
Post by Day 3 a description of the community you selected. Then, explain the strengths and challenges associated with that community based on its characteristics. Finally, explain how you, as a social worker, might help the community view its perceived challenges as a strength.
Be sure to post the pictures you took that represent the characteristics you identified in the community.

Essay Questions Chapter 1-4
Chapter 1: The greatest of all Chinese lawgivers, Confucius, did not esteem written laws. He believed that good rulers were the best guarantee of justice. Does our legal system rely primarily on the rule of law or the rule of people? Which do you instinctively trust more?
Chapter 2: Many of America’s largest consumer product companies, such as Wal-Mart, Nike and Land’s End, buy fabric produced in China by Fountain Set Holdings Ltd. Chinese government investigators recently discovered that Fountain Set has contaminated a local river by dumping dye waste into it. What responsibility do U.S. companies have to ensure safe environmental practices?
Chapter 3: Annie and Bart are coworkers. In fact, they share a cubicle wall. Recently, they were involved in a fender-bender in the company parking lot. Each blames the other for the accident, and the two have stopped speaking. Would you advise them try to settle their dispute through arbitration, mediation or with a traditional lawsuit? Why?
Chapter 4: Until recently, every state had a statute outlawing the burning of American flags. But in Texas v. Johnson, the Supreme Court declared such statutes unconstitutional, saying that flag burning is symbolic speech, protected by the First Amendment. Does Congress have the power to overrule the Court’s decision?

Ethics, Responsibility and Society
This week we take up the issue of individual rights, and how individual rights are mediated by the responsibilities we have to the social well-being―which includes both our responsibilities to other individuals who we interact with and our responsibilities to the collective good, or the well-being of everyone together. As is often noted, every ri.

Choose one of the following questions:
1. What does it mean to have a “sociological imagination?” How does this relate to what Mills describes as the connection between the individual and culture? The reading discusses the example of marriage using the sociological imagination. Share an additional example of an issue that might be analyzed by sociologists as both an individual and societal issue.
2. Describe the different types of social norms, providing examples. What are the functions of social norms in society? How do you think your culture would exist if there were no such thing as a social “norm”? Explain.
3. Select a topic of contemporary relevance that is of interest to you (for example, poverty, juvenile delinquency, teen births, or racial neighborhood segregation). Briefly describe why you selected the topic. Using what you learned about sociological research this week, create a simple research question about the topic. Match your research question to an appropriate research method and describe how as a sociologist you would conduct the research to answer your proposed question. Also take into account ethical guidelines for research.
The Week 1 Forum meets the following course objectives:
Apply a sociological perspective to the social world
Analyze contemporary social issues using the sociological imagination and use sociological theories and concepts to analyze everyday life.
Describe culture and socialization.
Describe the major research methods used in sociological research
Instructions for all Forums:
Each week, learners will post one initial post per week. This post must demonstrate comprehension of the course materials, the ability to apply that knowledge in the real world. Learners will engage with the instructor and peers throughout the learning week. To motivate engaged discussion, posts are expected to be on time with regular interaction throughout the week. All posts should demonstrate college level writing skills. To promote vibrant discussion as we would in a face to face classroom, formatted citations and references are not required. Quotes should not be used at all, or used sparingly. If you quote a source quotation marks should be used and an APA formatted citation and reference provided.
Hello everyone,
There are four types of norms namely, folkways, mores, taboos, and laws.
Folkways
Some norms originate from and organize casual interactions, and forthcoming out of repetitions and routines. They are mostly in operation, and we use them daily to satisfy our needs (Hechter, M. & Opp, 2005). Folkways draws a line between being rude and polite behavior, they pressure us to act in a certain away but the lack moral significance.
For example, the practice of waiting in (or on) line in many of the society is an example of folkways. This process creates order I buying things and services and also smoothens the ways t ...

Discussion: Social Work Competence
The term competence connotes a level of preparedness for addressing issues and maintaining a high standard of practice with clients. Competent social workers have completed adequate preparations for licensure, and they are appropriately credentialed. They adhere to ethical practices by maintaining professional boundaries and honoring commitments to confidentiality. How might you demonstrate your competence as a social worker? How can you recognize competence in other social workers?
For this Discussion, review this week’s Readings. Think about elements in the articles that denote competence.
Post by Day 4 a description of at least two criteria that define competence in social work. Give an example of each criterion of competence and justify your selection.

Ashford 3: - Week 2 - Discussion 2
Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses.
The Three Ethical Perspectives
The purpose of this discussion is to help you understand how to construct an ethical argument. Prepare and post a response to the following prompt:
· Identify the basic themes, topics, and concepts that make up the discipline of ethics. Explain the themes or ideas that unite the different ethical theories.
· Describe how you might apply one of the ethical theories or perspectives we have discussed in this class to one of the following social issues:
· Limiting smoking in public places, such as public buildings, restaurants, or city parks
· Municipal governments using public funds to build stadiums for professional sports teams
· Requiring a private landowner to provide habitat for endangered species on their properties
In an effort to present a balanced discussion, describe an alternative perspective to the issue you have addressed.
Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required resources and/or other scholarly sources, and properly cite any references in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7.

Discussion week 7

Discussion: New Harbor Community Center—Part 1
Human and social service work necessarily involves sensitive client issues such as poverty, discrimination, lack of access, and medical and mental health needs. Last week you explored some of the particular challenges that may arise during group work, such as greater risks for confidentiality breaches or the skill base needed to work with multiple people at once. Working with communities can present some of the same challenges—and poses some unique ones too. Conducting work within communities often requires a holistic, preventative, and social justice outlook on community support and success. It also requires coordination of many different stakeholders, both in and out of the community (e.g., policymakers). When successfully implemented, community work allows human and social services professionals to go beyond treatment of individuals to look at the improvements that can be made within the system to treat, solve, and ultimately prevent issues. For this Discussion, you examine a community scenario for particular ethical considerations that would be most important to consider for the case.
To Prepare: •Review Chapter 13 in your course text Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions and the NOHS ethical standards, specifically the “Responsibilities to Public and Society” section. •Consider the New Harbor Community Center scenario in the Interactive Learning Community with Robert Johnson, located in the Weekly Resources.
By Day 4 Post an explanation of the most important ethical considerations that Robert must be aware of and what he can do to ensure that he does not cross any boundaries. Provide references to the NOHS standards and the literature to support your response.

Competence includes knowing and abiding by the NASW Code of Ethics. The competent social worker knows the six values (service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence) and their ethical principles (National Association of Social Workers, 2008). They know them, but also understand and practice them. They also know, understand and practice the Social Workers’ Ethical Responsibilities to clients, colleagues, in practice settings, as professionals, to the social work profession and to the broader society (National Association of Social Workers, 2008). They are comfortable enough with the Code of Ethics to know when they need to reach out to a mentor, to ask for clarification in a sticky situation. They have the strength to uphold the Code of Ethics and to confront a colleague when their actions are in question.
Competence means working within the boundaries of what you know and are licensed to practice. This also includes acknowledging when you do not know enough and need to pass a client or duty on to another that is better qualified. As a licensed social worker, you are able to perform certain tasks. There are other tasks that you cannot ethically perform until you are a licensed clinical social worker. The competent social worker knows what they are capable of doing and what they are not.

Competence in social work means to abide by your regions Code of Ethics as well as upholding the law to the highest professional degree. Competent practice protects the integrity of the social work profession and the rights of our clients to appropriate and beneficial service. It also means that as social workers, we have the responsibility to use critical thinking and decision making skills to properly assess and utilize all resources available for the betterment of our unique clients. To do this, a social worker must be conscientious and aware of his or her own barriers to competence in order to overcome them. An example of such a barrier can include lack of experience with a particular group, or the acknowledgment of personal bias to be set aside for the sake of their practice. I think that it is important to realize that social workers are diverse, and will inevitably come across potential challenges to practicing competently. These are the situations which determine a social workers ability to commit to their profession ...

Assignment Overview
In the assignment this week, you will write a paper (7–10 pages), including a literature review, that examines ethical behavior, diversity, and civil discourse in the context of your particular focus and specialization.
What You Need to Know
Ethical Reasoning
Morris (2016) tells us:
In fall 2016, more than twenty million students enrolled across more than four million colleges and universities in the U.S. One in four students were members of a minority group, and approximately one million were international students. These students interacted with approximately four million administrators and faculty and staff members in a diversity of settings. Most of these students will easily transition into a life of academics and social interactions. For others, insults, aggressions, and lack of inclusion are a reality; and these experiences will shape their interactions and perceptions . . . on the challenges facing the nation and world and considering the role that post-secondary education plays in improving civil discourse nationally and creating safe spaces for dialogue and personal growth. (p. 361)
Morris (2016) goes on to argue:
First, [we must] identify resources to support conversations around civil discourse, social justice, and inclusion. Could we individually and collectively in every department, college, and administrative unit resolve to make a difference—to role-model and ask our students to be kind, show compassion, be inclusive and fair, and extend a hand of friendship? Maybe our academic words, like social justice, just do not resonate. Perhaps people forget that words have power and can cause long-lasting pain or can provide encouragement. While we may study and advocate for equity, perhaps we should say that this campus and my class will discuss challenging topics; but we will be characterized by the following values: to listen, to reflect, to show compassion, to think critically, and to care about this community of learners. I know: it sounds like Robert Fulghum’s

Week8 assigment Assignment: Assessment Application
Imagine how terrible it would be to plan a party and no one showed up. As a social worker, you may very well plan a group and no one attends. Why might this happen? In part, it might be due to a lack of proper planning. Prior to establishing a group, there is a great deal of planning that needs to occur. First and foremost, you need to assess the need for the group.
· Why does this group need to be provided?
· Are there enough individuals who would want this type of group?
· Is there a clear identified gap in services at the agency that shows a need for this group?
· Have you chosen a time when many clients could attend this group?
· What are the criteria for being accepted into the group?
· Is there a possible incentive that could be offered for attending the group (bus or gas fare, food, etc)?
· Do you need babysitting services so that clients with children are free to attend the group?
· Is this a task group, an educational group, and or a psychosocial group?
· Is the group open-ended or time-limited?
As you can see, there are many details a social worker needs to address, prior to starting a group. Once these details are finalized, how will you run the group and what intervention skills might you use to meet the need you identified?
For this Assignment, review this week’s Resources. Then, select a population with which you might like to build a group. Consider the needs of the population and the type of group you might build to benefit the population. Think about how you might structure this group and what role you, the social worker, might need to assume in order to support the group members. Finally, reflect on what intervention skills this group might require and the potential group dynamics of which you should be aware while running the group.
Assignment: (2- to 4-page paper in APA format).
Your paper should include:
· A description of the population with which you might like to build a group and an explanation of the type of group you might build with this population.
· An explanation of the concerns that might be addressed for this population in that group and a description of which cultural structures and values may oppress, marginalize, alienate, create, or enhance privilege and power for this group.
· A description of the details you must consider when planning the group. For example, composition of the group, recruitment strategies, format (open or closed), time frame, and use of screening interviews for members.
· An explanation of the intervention skills needed for working with this group and an explanation of the potential professional roles the social worker might need to take on as the leader.
· An explanation of the potential dynamics to be aware of when running this particular group.
Support your Assignment with specific references to the Resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.

When one pictures a doctor sitting at her office desk, it seems natural to imagine multiple diplomas on the wall nearby. The notion of doctors displaying their credentials seems indisputable when one considers the importance of professional credibility in instilling trust in patients.
Just as medical practitioners are responsible for achieving and maintaining proper licensure, so are social work professionals. Those who receive the title of “social worker” have met the criteria developed to demonstrate proficiency in meeting the demands associated with the profession.
· For this Discussion, research the criteria for assuming the title of social worker in your state or country. Consider benefits offered by title protection and maintenance of licensure standards. Discussion: Religion and Privilege
For citizens in some countries, religious oppression is common and long standing. While freedom of religion is guaranteed in the U.S., religious intolerance still exists. According to the Equal Opportunity Employment commission, the number of lawsuits filed for religious discrimination doubled between 2000–2010 (Pledger, 2011). Social workers must be alert for the complex ways that religious privilege functions. By creating an awareness of the privilege given to some while marginalizing others, social workers can understand how this bias impacts their clients.

You may have experienced similar difficulty in the first week of this course when asked to explore the individual aspects of culture that combine to create your unique self-identity. Forms of oppression can come together often in almost imperceptible ways to form the complex environment in which you and your clients live and interact. As a social worker, you must examine carefully the intersections between religious discrimination, sexism, classism, and racism so you can respond accordingly.
To prepare:
Consider this week's resources that describe how religion intersects with other forms of oppression.

Week 3: Conflict Theories
Imagine living your life without any problems to solve or obstacles to overcome. What if everyone you encounter held the same beliefs and opinions that you do? How would you continue to learn and mature, without the lessons provided through conflict? Because conflict and adversity are nearly unavoidable, the social worker’s focus often is on helping clients resolve and learn from conflict, in order to continue the progress toward their goals. An understanding of the theories about why conflict exists and how it functions in people’s lives provides the foundation from which social workers can best assist clients in coping with and resolving the conflicts they face.
This week, you evaluate the appropriateness of conflict theories for specific populations and compare their application to social work practice.
Learning Objectives
Students will: Not a Assingment
· Evaluate appropriateness of conflict theories for social work case studies
· Apply social work skills related to conflict theory in social work case studies to specific populations
· Compare conflict theories
· Analyze influences of integrative theories on social work practice
· Analyze congruence between integrative theories and social work ethics and values

Boundary Issues
It may not be possible or reasonable for counselors to always avoid dual relationships with clients. For example, counselors who live and work in small rural communities may attend the same religious institutions as their clients, or use the same libraries, doctors, or other services. In these multiple-relationship situations, counselors would not be in violation of ethical standards if they took reasonable steps to protect their objectivity and efficacy, and to avoid possibilities of exploitation or harm.
Counselors and supervisors usually consider dual relationships on a continuum of risk. As you work through the notion of dual relationships, you should consider the relationship with your client and the context of the situation. It is also important to consider the impact of dual roles on the power dynamics of the therapeutic relationship. For example, clients, students, and supervisees have less experience, knowledge, and power compared with licensed counselors and supervisors. Consequently, they are less likely to recognize inappropriate boundary crossings or to express their concerns about these crossings. It is your responsibility as an ethical practitioner to monitor and ensure appropriate boundaries across all related counseling situations.
For this Discussion, review the
Clinical Mental Health Counseling: Boundary Issues
media and consider the population that you are interested in working with as a professional counselor. Then, review the Learning Resources for this week and explore potential boundary issues you may encounter while working with this population. Reflect on potential benefit or harm related to boundary crossing. Finally, consider potential consultants who might be able to address any boundary issues.

a brief description of the population you selected. Then, explain any potential boundary issues you anticipate may be challenging in working with this population and explain why. Explain the potential benefit or harm associated with boundary crossing with this population. Finally, explain who you might consult with to address this boundary issue and why.
Be sure to use the Learning Resources and the current literature to support your response.

and expand on your colleague’s posting by providing an alternate perspective on how you would work with your colleague’s selected population. Provide potential boundary crossing challenges that your colleague did not discuss and offer potential solutions for addressing these challenges.

word analytical paper on a local issue that you isolate and develop:
Immigrants are considered second to Natives (Americans)
. You will have the topic approved in week 4. You will choose a moral issue, consider and fairly state opposing views on this issue and offer a clear argument in support of one of those views. The paper will apply
moral theories using logical analysis
, in order to demonstrate your understanding of complex real world moral issues. The paper will use the elements of
philosophical reasoning to identify and analyze
a moral issue in the local community thereby demonstrating the relevance of philosophical thinking to everyday life. See the grading rubric for more details
.
You just submit your final paper in two places, the assignment folder and in turnitin. Failure to submit either one will result in a 50% loss of your grade for this paper.
To assist you in further clarifying what your paper should look like, use the following checklist:
___1. The paper is 1,200-1,700 words long.
___2. Double-spaced, using WORD or similar program.
___3. You submitted the paper in the assignment folder AND in turnitin (failure to do either represents a 50% loss of points)
___4. The paper addresses the same topic submitted in week 4 and partially developed in week 7. The topic is a
local
topic.
___5. Your position is clearly stated in paragraph 1.
___6. Your position is clearly supported using external evidence, including in significant ways the materials and resources provided in previous weeks, with proper in-text citations and full references at the end. This is the main evaluative item for your final paper.
___7. The paper will apply moral theories using logical analysis, in order to demonstrate your understanding of complex real world moral issues.
___8. The paper will use the elements of philosophical reasoning to identify and analyze a moral issue in the local community thereby demonstrating the relevance of philosophical thinking to everyday life.
___9. 1-2 paragraphs well-substantiated are used to provide opposing views and how you respond to the opposing views, in both cases using in-text citations of the external sources used and with proper references at the end.
___10. There are no typos and paragraphs are of adequate length (not too long).
The grading
rubric

Discussion 1: Title Protection and Licensure
When one pictures a doctor sitting at her office desk, it seems natural to imagine multiple diplomas on the wall nearby. The notion of doctors displaying their credentials seems indisputable when one considers the importance of professional credibility in instilling trust in patients.
Just as medical practitioners are responsible for achieving and maintaining proper licensure, so are social work professionals. Those who receive the title of “social worker” have met the criteria developed to demonstrate proficiency in meeting the demands associated with the profession.
For this Discussion, research the criteria for assuming the title of social worker in your state or country. Consider benefits offered by title protection and maintenance of licensure standards. Also think Kirst-Ashman, K. K., & Hull, G. H., Jr. (2012).

Describe two strengths and two Although students of social work have not yet satisfied the criteria to earn the title of “social worker,” they are bound by the same ethical requirements as titled social workers. Social workers regularly face ethical issues of varying magnitude, and social work students may as well. Some issues seem obvious, while others may emerge in subtle ways.
For this Discussion, select one of the following scenarios. Consider the dilemma described, and imagine how you might feel if you found yourself in a similar situation. Think about the ethical obligations you would have as a social worker or social work student.
Scenario 1
You are a social worker in a public health department providing services to pregnant women. As part of your duties, you provide parenting education, support, and connection to community resources, and you follow up with the families and their newborns for six months after birth. Ms. C has been a client of yours during two pregnancies in the last three years. She has a 15 year-old, a nine year-old, a three year-old, and a newborn. On this day, you are making a routine visit to Ms. C, who lives in an older mobile hom.

Community Policy Proposals
You will be using the results of your Unit 3 Community Assessment assignment as the basis for this assignment. You have examined the social change and public policy environment of your home community by surveying the population demographics (taking into account gender, race, and sexual orientation, as well as varied nationalities and their social and economic status) and explored public sources of information in order to identify demands for social changes in businesses, non-profits, and government. These demands reflect the possible need for public policy development.
Draft and present to your group two possible policy proposals that respond to the specific public demands you identified in your community in the previous assignment.
(Due Sunday November 2)
These demands may apply to businesses, non-profit organizations, or government.
Utilize the document entitled, "Elements of a Standard Policy Statement," which is located in your Social Policy Toolbox, to guide your development of these proposals.
Include a title for each proposal.
Meet with your group during this week.
Each member of your group will offer each of their public policy proposals for review.
Acting in a collaborative capacity, offer suggestions concerning the public policy proposals of each of your peers and recommend to each presenter a primary policy that should be developed and used to complete the remaining project assignments.
Write a 750-word written summary of your meeting(s) with your group, emphasizing these elements:
(DUE NOVEMBER 8....I will try to provide feedback from the group for the summary once available)
State the proposed policy on which you have decided, with the following:
A descriptive title.
A statement of the public entity for which the policy is intended.
The beneficiaries of the policy.
The human service outcome for social change.
State which actors in the home community may play a constructive and active role to advance the policy process, and identify the actors or factors that may pose as obstacles to your proposed policy.
State the key discussion points raised by your peers in support of or in opposition to your proposed policy.
State your rationale for choosing the policy proposal.

Discussion 1: Treatment Evaluation
Many social work students dread taking research classes. They often view the courses as unnecessary to be a good social worker when, in fact, the opposite is true. How do you really know that your interventions are working, unless you evaluate them? As a social worker it is essential to identify in a quantifiable manner whether a treatment is helping the client or if it needs to be abandoned for another approach. In the past, social workers depended on recognizing a client’s progress through their own observations. Today, with a significant push both in the field of social work and among insurance companies to provide evidenced-based practice, social workers now are expected, more than ever, to evaluate their practice. Selecting the proper measurement/evaluation tool, based on the clients’ presenting concerns and treatment goals, will provide the evidence-based practice that is expected by the field.
For this Discussion, review this week’s Learning Resources, including the course-specific case studies. Select either Abdel or Pedro from the course-specific case studies provided and search the Mental Measures Yearbook database to identify potential scales that could be used to evaluate the treatment. Select one of the scales you identified and consider why it might be useful in evaluating treatment. Finally, think about the validity and reliability of that scale.
Note: The course-specific case study you select should differ from the case study you selected in Week 6.
Post by Day 3 a description of the scale you might use to evaluate treatment for the client in the case study you selected and explain why you selected that scale. Be sure to reference the case study you selected in your post. Finally, explain the validity and reliability of that scale.

Discussion 2: Management of Planned and Unplanned Termination
Ending a client relationship can be just as difficult as ending a personal relationship. In fact, while much of the literature addresses when to terminate, a more significant topic is the feelings that surround termination. Depending on the client and the length of treatment, saying goodbye can be hard for both of you. As a result, you should prepare for termination and the feelings surrounding this step of the GIM process early in the client-social worker relationship.
While you generally anticipate that successful treatment will lead to the eventual termination of the client relationship, there are a variety of other reasons for why this relationship might come to an end. There might be a set number of sessions the client’s insurance will allow, or maybe the end of your intern.

Discussion: Society: Mental Health and Welfare
Throughout history, community leaders deemed it necessary to determine core principles, rules, and values to ensure the existence of a productive and healthy community. These principles, rules, and values serve as the foundation for establishing and maintaining societies that support the mental health and welfare of their members. Your values give rise to passion around issues that you believe need changing and that motivate you to take action. By upholding these values, you can contribute to a society that supports its members.
To prepare:
Select a societal issue from anywhere in the world about which you are passionate. If you selected a societal issue for your Capstone Project, select a different one to use for this Discussion. If you selected a profession-related issue for the Capstone Project, you should select a societal issue for this Discussion.
Think about your personal values that make this issue important to you and how upholding these values might contribute to society.

Adequate Standard of Living
The argument that an “adequate standard of living” is a constitutional right, endowed by the Creator in the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; has been debated since humans first assisted other humans. The historical position on the interpretation of this has shifted numerous times. Present your position on the level of assistance appropriate in providing services to move toward self reliance. Include in your position; how to fund, and deliver, and the ultimate goal of the assistance. Provide a specific example taken from real life, in your discussion post. For example, use examples that might fall under the Community Mental Health Act or the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. Respond to two of your classmates’ posts.

Discussion Disadvantaged and Vulnerable PopulationsThroughowiddowsonerica
Discussion: Disadvantaged and Vulnerable Populations
Throughout history, groups of people have received mistreatment that has little to do with who they are as people and more to do with their age, gender, socioeconomic status, skin color, or physical disability. People who face such challenges are more at risk for developing mental health and other life problems. Such problems might include substance abuse, trouble with law enforcement, and homelessness. Human services professionals may be motivated to assist such groups in addressing the challenges they face; however, helping may be difficult because of mistrust, cultural stigmas, and institutional barriers. Whatever the difficulties, social change agents, leaders, and advocates in the human services professions must find ways to help disadvantaged and vulnerable groups face challenges.
To prepare:
Select a disadvantaged or vulnerable population, and reflect on the challenges people within this population might face in society. This population can be local, regional, or from another country.
Select a code of ethics that might be applicable to this population, and identify specific guidelines that might guide your work with this population.
With these thoughts in mind:
By Day 4
Post
a brief description of the disadvantaged or vulnerable population you selected. Then, explain three of the greatest challenges this population faces, as well as the influence that addressing each of the challenges might make in the lives’ of members of this population. Finally, identify a professional code of ethics and explain two guidelines from within that code that might pertain to working with this population. Be specific, and provide examples to illustrate your points.
Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

Discussion 2: Why Is HBSE Relevant to Social Work?
The types of issues and concerns that children, and adolescents, present to social workers are as varied as the people themselves. Understanding how individuals behave in their particular environment will shed some light on their current challenges, but this alone is not enough. Social workers must know how to ask the right questions, as the answers will inform decisions about which resources may be most helpful.
For this Discussion, think about the connections between social work and human behavior and consider why it is relevant to social work practice.

Assignment 1 Conformity and Social InfluenceHow do reasonable p.docxcarlibradley31429
Assignment 1: Conformity and Social Influence
How do reasonable people go along with unreasonable ideas, including mass suicide? How do charismatic leaders create their own “culture” within a specific situation and setting and then bring followers along? It is unsettling to consider that researchers have found that almost anyone will obey orders if placed in the right situation.
For this Assignment, you will explore the role of conformity and social influence in the dynamics of a cult. Keep in mind the definition of “culture” as you examine how a powerful leader can create a distinct culture, or “cult,” that others join and follow: a set of attitudes, behaviors, and symbols shared by a large group of people (Shiraev & Levy, 2017, p. 4) .
To prepare:
Review the sections in Chapter 10 of your course text, beginning with “Universal Interaction” (p. 301), and pay particular attention to the content on conformity, obedience, leadership, and social power.
Your Week 5 Learning Resources provide information on three different cults and their leaders in recent U.S. history: Jim Jones and the People’s Temple, David Koresh and the Branch Davidians, and Marshall Applewhite and Heaven’s Gate. You are encouraged to choose one as the focus of your Assignment. Additional Learning Resources provide insights on the dynamics of a cult.
Note:
If you prefer to choose a different leader and group, check with your instructor first for approval.
For your focus leader, review and analyze the Module 5 Learning Resources provided and additional resources you find in the Walden Library or in other sources, including reputable websites, to complete this Assignment.
For your focus leader and group, think about how each may exemplify the concepts of conformity, obedience, and social power:
How the leader builds a “culture” with its own rules outside of the larger culture
What elements compel followers to conform, such as charisma, isolation, and/or fear
Use the Learning Resources provided and those you find to analyze your leader and followers as an example of a situational development of a “culture” through conformity, obedience, and social power.
By Day 7
Submit
a 2 - to 3-page research paper in which you do the following:
Describe the leader and followers who are the subject of your analysis.
Analyze how the leader created a distinct “culture” for followers and what elements of a culture were present in the setting.
Analyze how the leader used social power to influence followers.
Analyze elements that created conformity and obedience among the followers.
Explain how your chosen leader’s use of social influence applies to the leaders in your culture (e.g., local, academic, political, or other types of leaders you identify).
Note:
Support the responses within your Assignment with evidence from the assigned Learning Resources and those you found. Provide a reference list for resources you used for this Assignment.

My degree is an EDD in Performance Improvement Leadership
All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten
(1988). However, sometimes simple guidelines work best. (p. 361)

Submit your assignment by Day 7 of Week 8.

Assignment: Journal Entry–Intersection and Religious Discrimination
When pieces of cloth are sewn together, you might have trouble discerning the individual pieces of cloth that make the final garment, but by looking carefully, you can find the seams.

Support your posts and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.

Discussion Society Mental Health and WelfareThroughout his.docxstelzriedemarla

Post by Day 4 an explanation of why studying human behavior and the social environment (HBSE) is relevant for social workers. In your analysis, explain how HBSE is unique from other social and behavioral sciences. Please use the Learning Resources to support your answer.

In this SLP you will identify where the major transportation modes are used in the EESC from SLP3: rail, inland water, ocean steamer, and/or OTR.
There are five basic transportation modes: rail, inland water ways, ocean, over-the-road, and air. We will not be concerned about air transport in this SLP as it is the least used and most expensive in general supply chain transportation.
Review and read these resources on these three transportation modes: rail, inland water, and OTR. Ocean is not included in these readings since it is mainly used for importing and exporting. This will be covered in more detail in LOG502. But you are asked to identify where ocean transport is used, but not in detail.

In this essay you should combine your practice responding and analyz.docxwhitneyleman54422
In this essay you should combine your practice responding and analyzing short stories with support derived from research. So far in class, we have practiced primarily formal analysis. Now I want you to practice "joining the conversation." In this essay you will write a literary analysis that incorporates the ideas of others. The trick is to accurately present ideas and interpretations gathered from your research while adding to the conversation by presenting
your own
ideas and analysis.
You will be evaluated based on how well you use external sources. I want to see that you can quote, paraphrase and summarize without plagiarizing. Remember, any unique idea must be credited, even if you put it in your own words.
Choose one of the approaches explained in the "Approaches to Literary Analysis" located at the bottom of this document. Each approach will require research, and that research should provide the context in which you present your own ideas and support your thesis. Be sure to properly document your research. Review the information, notes, and pamphlets I have distributed in class as these will help guide you.
While I am asking you to conduct outside research, do not lose sight of the primary text to which you are responding---the story! Your research should support
your
interpretations of the story. Be sure that your thesis is relevant to the story and that you quote generously from the story.
Purpose:
critical analysis, Argument, writing from sources
Length:
approx 1200 words
Documentation:
Minimum of 4 sources required (one primary source—the story or poem analyzed, and three secondary, peer reviewed journals). (Note: review the material in "finding and evaluating sources.ppt" to help you choose relevant and trustworthy sources.)
Choose from the following short stories:
The Lottery,
Shirley Jackson
A Rose for Emily,
William Faulkner
The Dead
, James Joyce
The Veldt
, Ray Bradbury
Hills Like White Elephants,
Ernest Hemingway
The Cask of Amontillado or The Tell-Tale Heart,
Edgar Allen Poe
Below are some examples.
They are just here to give you an idea of the type of approaches that will work for this essay.
1. Philosophical analysis: How do the stories by Jean Paul Sartre and Albert Camus reflect the philosophy of existentialism?
2. Socio/cultural analysis: What opinion about marriage and gender roles does Hemingway advance in "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber"?
3. Historical analysis:: What social dilemmas faced by African Americans in the 1960s might have inspired Toni Cade Bambara to write "The Lesson"?
4. Biographical analysis: What events in Salman Rushdie's life might have influenced the events in "At the Auction of the Ruby Slippers"?
5. Psychological analysis: How is John Cheever's "The Swimmer" a metaphor for the psychology of addiction?

Dances with Wolves
(1990). Lt. John Dunbar (Kevin Costner) is assigned to the Western frontier on his own request after an act of bravery. He finds himself at an abandoned outpost. At first he maintains strict order using the methods and practices taught to him by the military, but as the film progresses, he makes friends with a nearby Native American tribe, and his perceptions of the military, the frontier, and Native Americans change dramatically.
Working Girl
(1988) Tess McGill (Melanie Griffith) works as a secretary for a large firm involved in acquiring media corporations such as radio and television. When her boss has a skiing accident, Tess gets a chance to use her own ideas and research, ideas that she has been keeping within herself for years – ideas that are arguably better, and more insightful into mass media practices, than her boss’s ideas were.
Schindler’s List
(1993). In Poland during World War II, Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson) gradually becomes concerned for his Jewish workforce after witnessing their persecution by the Nazis. He initially was motivated by profit, but as the war progressed he began to sympathize with his Jewish workers and attempted to save them. He was credited with saving over 1000 Jews from extermination. (Based on a true story.)
Gran Torino
(2008). Walt Kowalski (Clint Eastwood), a recently widowed Korean War veteran alienated from his family and angry at the world. Walt's young neighbor, an Asian American, is pressured into stealing Walt's prized 1972 Ford Gran Torino by his cousin for his initiation into a gang. Walt thwarts the theft and subsequently develops a relationship with the boy and his family.
Describe the specific theories, assumptions, or “schools of thought” that the characters in the film have. How do their schools of thought differ?
How do the main characters change over the course of a film? How do their goals or desires change? Do they see themselves differently by the end of the film?
Which reflective theory from the course best illustrates the process the main characters go through during the film? How so?
Would you say that the main characters evolved or grew after learning something that was new, or a new approach, a new theory, or a new understanding of their place in the world?
I suggest that you refrain from reiterating the plotline. Rather, stay focused on character changes and the influences on those changes. Be sure to refer to the readings; use proper citations! This discussion will be scored based on the

In this assignment, I want you to locate two pieces of news detailin.docxwhitneyleman54422
In this assignment, I want you to locate two pieces of news detailing how an organization is responding to the COVID-19 crisis. You will turn this assignment into me via a Word Document attached to a separate email titled "extra credit assignment, Your Name" with your actual name in the subject line so I know to save the email for grading.
You need to analyze how businesses are handling the current COVID-19 crisis and I want to see if you can track down a press release from the organization, an email to their stakeholders, or even a screenshot of their website in which they explicitly address the actions they are taking in light of this new world we find ourselves in. However, the screenshots, hyperlinks to news stories, etc. are only one component of the assignment, your analysis is far and away from the more important component. Once you have tracked down two examples of how a business/organization is responding to the COVID-19 crisis, I want you to tell me how effective you perceive its action to be. Use any of the vocabulary or concepts that we have learned thus far in the semester to support your analysis. For example, is the business/organization using appropriate new media platforms to reach stakeholders? Is communication timely? Is the organization's tone sincere? What could have been done better? I am expecting one page, double-spaced for the length of your analysis, APA format. The images and or hyperlinks you compile will not be counted towards the length of your writing.

In the readings thus far, the text identified many early American interests in the Middle East from geopolitical to missionary. Using the text and your own research, compare these early interests with contemporary American interests in the Middle East.
In particular, how has becoming 1) a global hegemon after WWII and 2) the concurrent process of ‘secularization’ transformed American foreign policy thought and behavior toward Israel and the Middle East region generally? What themes have remained constant and what appear new? Would you attribute changes more to America’s new geopolitical role after WWII, or to the increasing secularization of American society? In the provided scenario there are a few different crimes being .docxwhitneyleman54422
In the provided scenario there are a few different crimes being committed and each could be argued multiple ways.
Steve could be charged with attempted murder. He was stabbing Michelle in the chest repeatedly. Due to the details of the scenario his charge could only be attempted because Michelle got up from the attack and charged Stacy. If she later died from her injuries Steve would/could be charged with murder. Even though he was “visibly drunk” he still maintained the purposely, knowing, or reckless intent to cause harm. He was coherent enough to make statements to her about how much he loved her, but still showed an extreme indifference to life and intent cause serious bodily harm. The biggest obstacle to a murder charge for Steve is his death. He cannot be charged with anything if he cannot be alive to defend himself. This takes care of the Steve factor.
Initially Stacy could be found guilty of murder. She knowingly and intentionally took the life of another (Steve). She also expresses an intent to kill when she stated, “I have had enough of you Steve”. From the scenario it is documented that she did not care for Steve and along with her statements, it can be shown that she was “just waiting for the opportunity” to kill Steve. In her favor is the fact that she attempted to stop Steve from harming another person. Her actions, while resulting in the death of another, were in the defense of a harmed person. She possibly saved the life of Michelle by using reasonable force to stop the stabbing.
Michelle could be charged with attempted murder as well. She stabbed Stacey in the chest while screaming, “how dare you”. She intended to cause death or serious physical injury. Again, if Stacey died from the wounds suffered, Michelle could/would be charged with murder. It could also be argued that Michelle had no malice aforethought. She was being stabbed and may not have known her actions were wrong. Her extreme circumstance clouded her reasonable decision making and all she was aware of is that her boyfriend, whom she loved, was just killed. This is unlikely but still a small possibility. Without more facts from the scenario it is difficult to fully play out all possibilities.

JULY–AUGUST 2017 HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW 63
P
Poking fun at meetings is the stuff of Dilbert car-
toons—we can all joke about how soul-sucking and
painful they are. But that pain has real consequences
for teams and organizations. In our interviews with
hundreds of executives, in fields ranging from high
tech and retail to pharmaceuticals and consulting,
many said they felt overwhelmed by their meetings—
whether formal or informal, traditional or agile, face-
to-face or electronically mediated. One said, “I cannot
get my head above water to breathe during the week.”
Another described stabbing her leg with a pencil to
stop from screaming during a particularly torturous
staff meeting. Such complaints are supported by re-
search showing that meetings have increased in length
and frequency over the past 50 years, to the point
where executives spend an average of nearly 23 hours
a week in them, up from less than 10 hours in the
1960s. And that doesn’t even include all the impromptu
gatherings that don’t make it onto the schedule.
Much has been written about this problem, but the
solutions posed are usually discrete: Establish a clear
agenda, hold your meeting standing up, delegate
someone to attend in your place, and so on. We’ve
observed in our research and consulting that real im-
provement requires systemic change, because meet-
ings affect how people collaborate and how they get
their own work done.
Yet change of such scope is rarely considered. When
we probed into why people put up with the strain that
meetings place on their time and sanity, we found
something surprising: Those who resent and dread
meetings the most also defend them as a “necessary
evil”—sometimes with great passion. Consider this
excerpt from the corporate blog of a senior executive
in the pharmaceutical industry:
I believe that our abundance of meetings at our
company is the Cultural Tax we pay for the inclusive,
learning environment that we want to foster…
and I’m ok with that. If the alternative to more
meetings is more autocratic decision-making, less
input from all levels throughout the organization,
and fewer opportunities to ensure alignment and
communication by personal interaction, then give
me more meetings any time!
To be sure, meetings are essential for enabling col-
laboration, creativity, and innovation. They often foster
relationships and ensure proper information exchange.
They provide real benefits. But why would anyone ar-
gue in defense of excessive meetings, especially when
no one likes them much?
Because executives want to be good soldiers. When
they sacrifice their own .

Stoichiometry Lab – The Chemistry Behind Carbonates reacting with Vinegar
Objectives: To visually observe what a limiting reactant is.
To measure the change in mass during a chemical reaction due to loss of a gas.
To calculate CO2 loss and compare actual loss to expected CO2 loss predicted by the balanced chemical equation.
Materials needed: Note: Plan ahead as you’ll need to let Part 1 sit for at least 24 hours.
plastic beaker graduated cylinder
electronic balance 2 eggs
1 plastic cup baking soda (5 g)
dropper vinegar (500mL)
2 identical cups or glasses (at least 500 mL)
Safety considerations: Safety goggles are highly recommended for this lab as baking soda and vinegar chemicals can be irritating to the eyes. If your skin becomes irritated from contact with these chemicals, rinse with cool water for 15 minutes.
Introduction:
The reaction between baking soda and vinegar is a fun activity for young people. Most children (and adults!) enjoy watching the foamy eruption that occurs upon mixing these two household substances. The reaction has often been used for erupting volcanoes in elementary science classes. The addition of food coloring makes it even more fun. The reaction involves an acid-base reaction that produces a gas (CO2). Acid-base reactions typically involve the transfer of a hydrogen ion (H+) from the acid (HA) to the base (B−):
HA + B− --> A− + BH (eq #1)
acid base
The base often (although not always) carries a negative charge. The acid usually (although not always) becomes negatively charged through the course of the reaction because it lost an H+. An example of a typical acid base reaction is below:
HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) --> NaCl(aq) + H2O(l) (eq #2)
The reaction is actually taking place between the hydrogen ion (H+) and the hydroxide ion (OH−). The chloride and sodium are spectator ions. To write the reaction in the same form as eq #1:
HCl(aq) + OH- --> Cl- + H2O (l) (eq #3)
Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) will dissociate in water to form sodium ion (Na+) and bicarbonate ion (HCO3−).
NaHCO3 --> Na+ + HCO3− (eq #4)
Vinegar is usually a 5% solution of acetic acid in water. The bicarbonate anion (HCO3−) can act as a base, accepting a hydrogen ion from the acetic acid (HC2H3O2) in the vinegar. The Na+ is just a spectator ion and does nothing.
HCO3− + HC2H3O2 --> H2CO3 + C2H3O2− (eq#5)
Bicarbonate acetic acid carbonic acid acetate ion
The carbonic acid that is formed (H2CO3) decomposes to form water and carbon dioxide:
H2CO3 --> H2O(l) + CO2(g) (eq#6)
carbonic acid water carbon dioxide
The latter reaction (production of carbon dioxide) accounts for the bubbles and the foaming that is observed upon mixing vinegar and baki.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

Discussion: Academic Values and Professional Ethics - A
Comparison
The first sentence of the Preamble to the Code of Ethics of the
National Association of Social Workers states that “the primary
mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-
being and help meet the basic human needs of all people...”
(NASW, 2008). This statement very much aligns with the
3. Walden University mission that as an institution “…provides a
diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity
to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can
effect positive social change” (Walden University, 2013). Social
workers are often called change agents as they address the
needs of marginalized and oppressed groups, by enacting
change on many different levels. How might Walden
University’s mission and vision compliment the social work
code of ethics? How might you be able to meld the two together
to become your own social change agent?

Discussion: Social Change
Advocacy might conjure images of speaking at a congressional
hearing or soliciting petition signatures at library entrances.
Yet, social workers engage in advocacy as an agent of social
change in numerous ways. The scenarios presented in this
week’s introduction are examples of three types of advocacy:
· Case advocacy—When a social worker addresses the lack of
5. services, or resources at the micro level, educates the client
about available resources and programs, or fights for clients’
rights.
· Legislative advocacy—When a social worker addresses a
policy gap at the macro level, and provides information and
suggestions to legislators, in order to close that gap.
· Community advocacy—When a social worker represents the
needs of a community at the mezzo level by engaging in group-
oriented activities, such as holding a town meeting to educate
the neighborhood about a particular issue they are facing.
Another type of advocacy, not represented by the earlier
scenarios, is agency advocacy. For example, you might conduct
agency advocacy as a social worker when you identify a gap in
services at your agency and pursue additional services for a
particular population the agency serves. Or, you might pursue a
change in current policy that you deem to be unfair to some of
your clients.
How do you envision becoming an agent of social change
through the use of advocacy?

the community, and to social work practice.

This statement very much aligns with the
How might you be able to meld the two together
to become your own social change agent?

discussion as a separetly work and each work needs a separetly
references, review this week’s Learning Resources. Consider
the similarities between the NASW’s social work core values
and Walden’s mission and vision. Then select either the Pedro
case or the Debra case and identify a potential ethical dilemma
from the case you selected. Consider the decision you might
make in response to that dilemma and reflect on how the
Walden Mission and Vision as well as the NASW ethical
standards might influence your decision. Finally think about
how the mission and vision and values might inform your role
as a social change agent.
1.Answer this discussion for week 10 with an explanation of the
similarities between social work core values and the Walden
Mission and Vision. Describe the potential ethical dilemma you
identified from the course-specific case study you selected.
Then explain the decision you might make in response to that
ethical dilemma. Include an explanation of how the Walden
Mission and Vision and the principles you selected from the
NASW ethical standards influenced your decision. Finally,
explain how the mission, vision, and values might inform your
role as a social change agent.

· Case advocacy—When a social worker addresses the lack of
15. services, or resources at the micro level, educates the client
about available resources and programs, or fights for clients’
How do you envision becoming an agent of social change
through the use of advocacy?

discussion as a separetly work and each work needs a separetly
references, review this week’s Learning Resources. Think about
whether advocacy is a vital aspect of social work. Then,
consider what section within the NASW code of ethics requires
advocacy of social workers. Finally, search for a local, state, or
federal legislative website for a pending law that relates to an
issue and a population that social workers encounter. Consider
the importance of passing this legislation to the population, to
the community, and to social work practice.
2.Answer this discussion for week 101 with an explanation of
whether you think advocacy is a vital aspect of social work. Be
sure to reference this week’s readings to support your position.
Then, explain what section within the NASW code of ethics
requires advocacy of social workers. Finally, describe the
16. pending law you selected and explain why its passage might be
important to the population effected by the issue, the broader
community, and social work practice.
