Fluid Imbibition - Hydraulic Fracture
Flowback Dynamics
R.V. Hawkes
Cost is $25 online & $30 at the door. Register here:
https://sep2018.bpt.me
Abstract: Multi-stage unconventional hydraulic fracturing treatments require pumping
large volumes of water based fluids. As the industry continues to develop extremely low
permeability reservoirs increasingly larger water based fluid treatments are being pumped.
These large treatments also lead to varying flowback issues ranging from high to low load
fluid recoveries. In many cases, either by design or controlled by operational restrictions,
wells can undergo weeks or months of shut-in following these very large treatments. In
most cases, these shut-in wells have demonstrated significant upticks in production
resulting in some operators reporting an enhancement to hydrocarbon recovery. The
reasons for the low and inefficient water recovery after fracturing are only now being
understood. Some researchers believe that low water recovery is due to water retention
in secondary fractures or unstable displacement and gravity segregation in fractures.
Others believe the retained water in the reservoir can leak-off into the rock matrix due to
water imbibition. Yet, in many cases, there are no negligible effects on long term
productivity. The dynamics of shut-in time permits the imbibition process to evolve;
allowing water to move deeper into the water-wet/clay-rich formation. This results in
lower water saturation and a corresponding higher gas/oil relative permeability near the
fracture surface. In contrast, if the well is not shut-in, capillary forces are balanced by
viscous forces, thereby trapping water at much higher saturations around the fractures
and reducing hydrocarbon flow potential.

Bottlenecks & Frac Hits
We kicked off our fall schedule with a social event at the Petroleum Club on August 16th
. It was a fun evening of
visiting with old, and new colleagues. Many gathered again together on August 18th
for a young professionals
Habitat for Humanity volunteer event. September is also filled with events, especially in the next two weeks. Be
on the lookout for emails concerning them, and throughout this newsletter for more details. I have highlighted
some of them below:
 SPE Liquids-Rich Basins Conference - North America (9/5 – 9/6). Please register here: https://www.spe.org/
events/en/2018/conference/18lrbc/register-liquids-rich-basins-conference.html
 Completions &Operations Meeting (9/6) - Liz Percak-Dennet, Biota Technology, Inc. presenting on “Subsurface
DNA Diagnostics Aid Well Spacing Decision in the Permian.” Please RSVP here: https://
www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3589702
 Section Meeting (9/10) - Robert Hawkes, DL presenting on “Fluid imbibition – Hydraulic fracture flowback
dynamics.” Please RSVP here: https://sep2018.bpt.me/
In addition to the aforementioned events coming up, I want to make special mention of two more. On September
4th
, the SPE-PB section is collaborating with University of Texas Permian Basin's (UTPB) STEM Academy and
Communities in Schools Permian Basin (CISPB) to kick off the new school year with energy education! We are
calling on you to help us educate 600 4th-12th graders. Don’t worry, the lesson plan and activities are prepared.
Just sign up here: https://goo.gl/forms/g3WnY6pg1UOQbFsu2. Secondly, our 28th
Annual SPE Permian Basin Golf
Tournament is on September 7th
at Hogan Park. Proceeds from this tournament have historically been one of the
primary sources of funds for the Permian Basin SPE Scholarship fund. Please see more details inside the
newsletter, and I hope to see you there!
Finally, I came across two very insightful articles in the August 2018 Journal of Petroleum Technology. The first
discussed some of the bottlenecks in the Permian Basin including pipeline takeaway capacity, shortage of truck
drivers, and inadequate road infrastructure. All these insufficiencies contribute to the double digit spread
between Midland crude, and West Texas Intermediate. As we know, most of the 2 million bopd pipeline takeaway
capacity being built will not come online until the second half of 2019. Forecasts are signaling a low $20s/bbl
spread in the first half of 2019. Ouch! The second article discussed the increasing popularity of “cube
developments” in mitigating against frac hits. Driving down the road in the Permian Basin, we’ve seen the growing
number of large well pads with multiple rigs, and frac fleets. The goal of this highly organized assembly-line type
operation is to achieve the best frac in every well drilled. These two articles remind me of a line from the movie,
The Martian: “…You just begin. You do the math. You solve one problem, and you solve the next one, and then the
next…” Admittedly, we are not talking about life and death here, but indulge my connection: professionals
working in the Permian Basin are solving one problem after the other, and as we continue solving problems, we
will remove the bottlenecks and increase well productivity.

Well Collision Avoidance, The Way Forward
Steve Sawaryn
Consultant
Cost is $25 online & $30 at the door. Register here:
https://oct2018.bpt.me/
Abstract:
The consequences of an unplanned intersection with an existing well can range from financial loss to a
catastrophic blow-out and loss of life. The process of well collision avoidance involves rules that determine
the allowable well separation, the management of the associated directional planning and surveying
activities and assurance and verification. The adoption of a particular minimum allowable separation rule,
no matter how conservative, does not ensure an acceptably low probability of collision. Many other factors
contribute, such as the level of compliance by office and rig personnel with collision avoidance procedures,
and the completeness and correctness of the directional database. All these factors are connected.
This is not a new subject, but current guidance is disparate, company specific and occasionally
contradictory. As a result, the guidance can be difficult to understand and implement. Standardisation is
required. This standardisation has been the goal of the SPE Wellbore Positioning Technical Section
(WPTS). The resulting recommendations are a culmination of the work and consensus of industry experts
from both operators and service companies. The effects of a standardised separation rule and attendant
practices are far reaching. They influence slot separations, trajectories, drilling practices, surveying
programme and well shut-in, with commercial as well as HSE implications.
Although collisions are rare, investigation of 19 anonymous collision events suggests they occur more
frequently than formal accounts would lead us to believe. Common themes across these events can be
identified and these lead to a conclusion that all such collisions are avoidable.
Biography:
Steve Sawaryn is an independent drilling engineering consultant specializing in drilling systems. During
the previous 35 years he held a variety of national and international posts in BP’s Drilling Engineering

STORM™ THE MOST COST EFFECTIVE MECHANICAL ISOLATION PACKER FOR REMEDIAL AND REFRAC APPLICATIONS IN THE
PERMIAN
MorphPackers and Nine Energy Service announce first deployment of STORM™ refrac isolation packers for Chaparral Energy
in Oklahoma.
MorphPackers Limited (“MorphPackers”) and Nine Energy Service, Inc. (“Nine”) announced jointly today that they have
deployed STORM™ refrac isolation packers within a production-insert string for Chaparral Energy in Oklahoma.
Due to excessive water production from the heel of the reservoir Chaparral Energy required mechanical isolation in their 4 ½”
open-hole production tubing to return the well to oil production. A 3 ½” flush joint production-insert string fitted with full ID
STORM™ isolation packers was successfully run to TD and the packers were expanded. The well was returned to oil
production on time & budget immediately afterwards.
The patented completion system utilizes expandable steel packers specializing in isolation and includes re-frac packers and
production anchors to maximize production within existing wells. The STORM™ refrac packer provides the maximum ID in
the market to provide the most effective system to instantly isolate and re-fracture stages thus extending the life of a well.
With no moving parts STORM™ packers are easy to deploy at a fraction of the cost of expandable liners, patches and
conventional straddle systems. STORM™ packers are compatible with standard plug & perf equipment

Hawkes Cost is $25 online & $30 at the door. Register here: https://sep2018.bpt.me Abstract: Multi-stage unconventional hydraulic fracturing treatments require pumping large volumes of water based fluids. As the industry continues to develop extremely low permeability reservoirs increasingly larger water based fluid treatments are being pumped. These large treatments also lead to varying flowback issues ranging from high to low load fluid recoveries. In many cases, either by design or controlled by operational restrictions, wells can undergo weeks or months of shut-in following these very large treatments. In most cases, these shut-in wells have demonstrated significant upticks in production resulting in some operators reporting an enhancement to hydrocarbon recovery. The reasons for the low and inefficient water recovery after fracturing are only now being understood. Some researchers believe that low water recovery is due to water retention in secondary fractures or unstable displacement and gravity segregation in fractures. Others believe the retained water in the reservoir can leak-off into the rock matrix due to water imbibition. Yet, in many cases, there are no negligible effects on long term productivity. The dynamics of shut-in time permits the imbibition process to evolve; allowing water to move deeper into the water-wet/clay-rich formation. This results in lower water saturation and a corresponding higher gas/oil relative permeability near the fracture surface. In contrast, if the well is not shut-in, capillary forces are balanced by viscous forces, thereby trapping water at much higher saturations around the fractures and reducing hydrocarbon flow potential. Biography: Robert graduated from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary, Alberta, Canada with a diploma in Petroleum Engineering Technology in 1979. Robert has authored and co-authored over 20 papers and was co-Author, Chapter 3 “Gas Well Testing and Evaluation” of the 2007 Modern Fracturing - Enhancing Natural Gas Production, engineering text book. Robert’s role at Trican Well Service in Calgary is Reservoir Engineering Advisor for their Geological and Reservoir Engineering Service group. Robert has been the recipient of numerous awards and was a Distinguished Lecturer with SPE in 2008. Page 2 September 2018 - Issue 172 CHAIRMAN’S CORNER Flo Akintunji SPE-PB Chairman 2018-2019 Bottlenecks & Frac Hits We kicked off our fall schedule with a social event at the Petroleum Club on August 16th . It was a fun evening of visiting with old, and new colleagues. Many gathered again together on August 18th for a young professionals Habitat for Humanity volunteer event. September is also filled with events, especially in the next two weeks. Be on the lookout for emails concerning them, and throughout this newsletter for more details. I have highlighted some of them below:  SPE Liquids-Rich Basins Conference - North America (9/5 – 9/6). Please register here: https://www.spe.org/ events/en/2018/conference/18lrbc/register-liquids-rich-basins-conference.html  Completions &Operations Meeting (9/6) - Liz Percak-Dennet, Biota Technology, Inc. presenting on “Subsurface DNA Diagnostics Aid Well Spacing Decision in the Permian.” Please RSVP here: https:// www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3589702  Section Meeting (9/10) - Robert Hawkes, DL presenting on “Fluid imbibition – Hydraulic fracture flowback dynamics.” Please RSVP here: https://sep2018.bpt.me/ In addition to the aforementioned events coming up, I want to make special mention of two more. On September 4th , the SPE-PB section is collaborating with University of Texas Permian Basin's (UTPB) STEM Academy and Communities in Schools Permian Basin (CISPB) to kick off the new school year with energy education! We are calling on you to help us educate 600 4th-12th graders. Don’t worry, the lesson plan and activities are prepared. Just sign up here: https://goo.gl/forms/g3WnY6pg1UOQbFsu2. Secondly, our 28th Annual SPE Permian Basin Golf Tournament is on September 7th at Hogan Park. Proceeds from this tournament have historically been one of the primary sources of funds for the Permian Basin SPE Scholarship fund. Please see more details inside the newsletter, and I hope to see you there! Finally, I came across two very insightful articles in the August 2018 Journal of Petroleum Technology. The first discussed some of the bottlenecks in the Permian Basin including pipeline takeaway capacity, shortage of truck drivers, and inadequate road infrastructure. All these insufficiencies contribute to the double digit spread between Midland crude, and West Texas Intermediate. As we know, most of the 2 million bopd pipeline takeaway capacity being built will not come online until the second half of 2019. Forecasts are signaling a low $20s/bbl spread in the first half of 2019. Ouch! The second article discussed the increasing popularity of “cube developments” in mitigating against frac hits. Driving down the road in the Permian Basin, we’ve seen the growing number of large well pads with multiple rigs, and frac fleets. The goal of this highly organized assembly-line type operation is to achieve the best frac in every well drilled. These two articles remind me of a line from the movie, The Martian: “…You just begin. You do the math. You solve one problem, and you solve the next one, and then the next…” Admittedly, we are not talking about life and death here, but indulge my connection: professionals working in the Permian Basin are solving one problem after the other, and as we continue solving problems, we will remove the bottlenecks and increase well productivity. Page 4 September 2018 - Issue 172 Society of Petroleum Engineers Distinguished Lecturer October 15th, 2018 Midland Petroleum Club 11:30am—1:00pm Well Collision Avoidance, The Way Forward Steve Sawaryn Consultant Cost is $25 online & $30 at the door. Register here: https://oct2018.bpt.me/ Abstract: The consequences of an unplanned intersection with an existing well can range from financial loss to a catastrophic blow-out and loss of life. The process of well collision avoidance involves rules that determine the allowable well separation, the management of the associated directional planning and surveying activities and assurance and verification. The adoption of a particular minimum allowable separation rule, no matter how conservative, does not ensure an acceptably low probability of collision. Many other factors contribute, such as the level of compliance by office and rig personnel with collision avoidance procedures, and the completeness and correctness of the directional database. All these factors are connected. This is not a new subject, but current guidance is disparate, company specific and occasionally contradictory. As a result, the guidance can be difficult to understand and implement. Standardisation is required. This standardisation has been the goal of the SPE Wellbore Positioning Technical Section (WPTS). The resulting recommendations are a culmination of the work and consensus of industry experts from both operators and service companies. The effects of a standardised separation rule and attendant practices are far reaching. They influence slot separations, trajectories, drilling practices, surveying programme and well shut-in, with commercial as well as HSE implications. Although collisions are rare, investigation of 19 anonymous collision events suggests they occur more frequently than formal accounts would lead us to believe. Common themes across these events can be identified and these lead to a conclusion that all such collisions are avoidable. Biography: Steve Sawaryn is an independent drilling engineering consultant specializing in drilling systems. During the previous 35 years he held a variety of national and international posts in BP’s Drilling Engineering Division in drilling operations, consultancy and projects. He is also a chartered engineer and fellow of the British Computer Soc. Sawaryn holds PhD and M.A. degrees from Cambridge U. He has authored more than 35 SPE papers and has served on a number of SPE committees. He received the 2010 SPE North-Sea Region Technical Award for Drilling Engineering and now chairs the SPE Wellbore Positioning Technical Section Collision Avoidance sub-committee.
