Krešo Kurt Butula
Schlumberger
Abstract:
This lecture presents approaches for increasing production from horizontal wells with multistage
fracture (HWMSF) completions in conventional reservoirs. HWMSF completions are now regularly
being drilled and completed in low-to-mid-permeability oil-bearing conventional reservoirs (k<10 md)
where the oilfield is under waterflooding. Although the industry has closed the HWMSF technology
gap of drilling and completing these wells, the productivity has been below the expected level. The
production is characterized by either an early-time relatively high production rate followed by a steep
production decline and water breakthrough or low initial production and even lower late-time
production. What went wrong and what can be done? The lessons learned in unconventional
reservoirs are not pertinent to conventional formations. Hence, the problem was examined from the
reservoir standpoint, focusing on achieving adequate pressure support to maximize drainage,
revising the waterflood process through drilling patterns, and evaluating the specific completion
techniques. Equally, the question warrants answers on current HWMSF restimulation, addressing
methodology applied to specific completion design, the horizontal wellbore azimuthal orientation
within the stress field, and, finally, the operating condition of the injector and producer wells. The
lecture discusses novel designs for refracturing and for future reservoir development, and, at the
same time, is a plea to the drilling, completion, and reservoir engineering teams to integrate their
competencies to optimize these complex production systems.

March Madness & Diaper Dandies!
Anyone finish March with a perfect bracket? According to the NCAA bracket tracker, as of the Sweet Sixteen round,
there was only one perfect bracket left out of the millions of brackets created across various online platforms around the
country. My bracket went bust right out of the gate after UC Irvine beat Kansas State in the round of 64. Notwithstanding, it was
entertaining watching some of the amazing players throughout the tournament. The best of many outstanding freshman players
(or Diaper Dandies, as they are called by the great college basketball analyst, Dick Vitale) in college basketball this year was Zion
Williamson. The 18 year old superstar is an incredible talent, and certainly left his mark on college basketball this year. Is it not
incredible the momentous impact a young person can have in the midst of seasoned veterans? Similar to Mr. Williamson, a
precocious University of Houston recent graduate developed an algorithm that helped BP locate “an extra 1.4 billion barrels of
oil in the Gulf of Mexico” earlier this year. BP’s annual Energy Outlook report predicts oil production ranging from 80 – 130
million barrels per day (B/D) in 2040. Current worldwide oil production stands around 85 million B/D. Assuming even the mean
estimate of the predicted range, it is obvious that the oil industry has much work left to do to ramp up production over the next
two decades. Even if policies here in the U.S. call for replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy before the world purportedly
ends in 12 years, the BP outlook does not expect those same fantasies to be adopted in Africa and Asia, currently home to 77
percent of the world’s population. These growing economies will continue to need cheap energy. So, we are back to where we
started: the Diaper Dandies. The oil and gas industry will continue to need young and talented petroleum engineers working
with industry veterans to develop innovative solutions for some of the most complex problems our industry is facing. I, for one,
have no problem steering my little one year old in that direction very early on.
March was a wonderful month for our Section! Study group meetings were well attended, and our 8th
Annual Sporting
Clays shoot was a smashing success. Thank you to all our sponsors and shooters. Also, many thanks to the students from our SPE
Texas Tech Chapter who came out and volunteered all day during the event. Like I said last month, they have continuously
exceeded our expectations with their service, reliability, and professionalism. April will be another great month for our section.
We have our Annual Awards Banquet on April 25th
. It will be a fun evening where we recognize colleagues who have been
nominated for awards in their disciplines; award scholarships to outstanding students; and recognize members who have served
our community over the past year. Please see more details about the Awards Banquet to the right on page 3. I hope to see you
there, and we promise, no boring technical talks to put your significant other to sleep. In addition to our Awards Banquet, please
see below for a summary for other meetings in April:
 Section Meeting (4/11) – Kreso Kurt Butula presenting on “The Unfulfilled Expectation of Horizontal Wells with Multistage
Fracture Completions in Conventional Reservoirs: A solution” Please RSVP here: https://Apr2019.bpt.me/

Finally, I want to acknowledge the generous contributions made by the annual CO2 conference to our yearly
scholarship fund. Having contributed $600,000 over the last several years, the CO2 conference has been one of the largest
contributors to our yearly scholarship fund. Fellow CO2 conference board, I salute you all.

SIPES April Program Announcement
April 17th, 2019
11:30 AM to 1:00 PM
Upstairs Ballroom of Midland Country Club
“Reversing Hubbert’s Peak”
Chris Spies
VP Geoscience and Technology, Concho Resources
SIPES always welcomes guests, and no reservations are required. Guest luncheon and program
cost is $30 to be paid to the treasurer at the meeting – cash or check only – no credit cards
please!! There is no charge for members. Reception begins at 11:15, Buffet lunch starts at
11:30 and the program begins at noon.
Abstract:
Hubbert’s peak theory is often used to describe the life cycle of any exhaustible
resource. The bell-shaped curve is characterized by an initial growth phase, a peak, and is
followed by a period of irreversible decline. Plotting Permian Basin oil production from
1945 to 2007 shows an ominous fit with Hubbert’s curve. This was the backdrop when
Concho Resources made its initial public offering (2007) hoping the confluence of
technology, favorable subsurface characteristics, and scale would defy the odds. Today
that combination has transformed Concho, now a Fortune 500 company, into one of the
largest independent producers in the U.S. and the Permian into one of the largest oil fields
in the world. This presentation will look back at some of the obstacles and innovations
that enabled Concho to be a key participant in the great rebirth of the Permian Basin.
Biography:
Chris Spies is Vice President of Geoscience and Technology for Concho Resources Inc. He
came to Concho in 2013 as a Geologic Advisor and later held the positions of Geoscience
Manager and Chief Geoscientist. Chris leads multidisciplinary teams tasked with resource
management, reservoir characterization, and the implementation of advanced
technologies. Mr. Spies previously worked in various geological roles of increasing
responsibility for ExxonMobil, Burlington Resources/ConocoPhillips, and Apache. He holds
a B.S. and M.S. in Geology from the University of Kansas.

HWMSF completions are now regularly being drilled and completed in low-to-mid-permeability oil-bearing conventional reservoirs (k<10 md) where the oilfield is under waterflooding. Although the industry has closed the HWMSF technology gap of drilling and completing these wells, the productivity has been below the expected level. The production is characterized by either an early-time relatively high production rate followed by a steep production decline and water breakthrough or low initial production and even lower late-time production. What went wrong and what can be done? The lessons learned in unconventional reservoirs are not pertinent to conventional formations. Hence, the problem was examined from the reservoir standpoint, focusing on achieving adequate pressure support to maximize drainage, revising the waterflood process through drilling patterns, and evaluating the specific completion techniques. Equally, the question warrants answers on current HWMSF restimulation, addressing methodology applied to specific completion design, the horizontal wellbore azimuthal orientation within the stress field, and, finally, the operating condition of the injector and producer wells. The lecture discusses novel designs for refracturing and for future reservoir development, and, at the same time, is a plea to the drilling, completion, and reservoir engineering teams to integrate their competencies to optimize these complex production systems. Biography: Krešo Kurt holds the position of Reservoir Management Advisor to the Schlumberger President for Russia and Central Asia. He has a Masters degree in petroleum engineering, University of Zagreb, Croatia, and has been based in Moscow, Russia, for the last 15 years. He has more than 27 years of worldwide onshore and offshore exposure and experience in multiple oilfield service domains. Currently, he is responsible for the assessments and integration process for complex subsurface projects and for defining the company business model and technological solutions, including new directions in Schlumberger R&E centers in Russia. He is a member of SPE and EAGE and a member of the Society of Core Analysts. He has been on program committees of international and Russian technical conferences. He served as the Program Director for the Moscow SPE Section and was awarded the Regional Service Award in 2014. Since 2014, he has been the SPE Moscow Section Chairperson. He is a fluent speaker of Russian, English, German, Italian, and Croatian. Newsletter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers Permian Basin Section

Anyone finish March with a perfect bracket? According to the NCAA bracket tracker, as of the Sweet Sixteen round, there was only one perfect bracket left out of the millions of brackets created across various online platforms around the country. My bracket went bust right out of the gate after UC Irvine beat Kansas State in the round of 64. Notwithstanding, it was entertaining watching some of the amazing players throughout the tournament. The best of many outstanding freshman players (or Diaper Dandies, as they are called by the great college basketball analyst, Dick Vitale) in college basketball this year was Zion Williamson. The 18 year old superstar is an incredible talent, and certainly left his mark on college basketball this year. Is it not incredible the momentous impact a young person can have in the midst of seasoned veterans? Similar to Mr. Williamson, a precocious University of Houston recent graduate developed an algorithm that helped BP locate “an extra 1.4 billion barrels of oil in the Gulf of Mexico” earlier this year. BP’s annual Energy Outlook report predicts oil production ranging from 80 – 130 million barrels per day (B/D) in 2040. Current worldwide oil production stands around 85 million B/D. Assuming even the mean estimate of the predicted range, it is obvious that the oil industry has much work left to do to ramp up production over the next two decades. Even if policies here in the U.S. call for replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy before the world purportedly ends in 12 years, the BP outlook does not expect those same fantasies to be adopted in Africa and Asia, currently home to 77 percent of the world’s population. These growing economies will continue to need cheap energy. So, we are back to where we started: the Diaper Dandies. The oil and gas industry will continue to need young and talented petroleum engineers working with industry veterans to develop innovative solutions for some of the most complex problems our industry is facing. I, for one, have no problem steering my little one year old in that direction very early on. March was a wonderful month for our Section! Study group meetings were well attended, and our 8th Annual Sporting Clays shoot was a smashing success. Thank you to all our sponsors and shooters. Also, many thanks to the students from our SPE Texas Tech Chapter who came out and volunteered all day during the event. Like I said last month, they have continuously exceeded our expectations with their service, reliability, and professionalism. April will be another great month for our section. We have our Annual Awards Banquet on April 25th . It will be a fun evening where we recognize colleagues who have been nominated for awards in their disciplines; award scholarships to outstanding students; and recognize members who have served our community over the past year. Please see more details about the Awards Banquet to the right on page 3. I hope to see you there, and we promise, no boring technical talks to put your significant other to sleep. In addition to our Awards Banquet, please see below for a summary for other meetings in April:  Section Meeting (4/11) – Kreso Kurt Butula presenting on “The Unfulfilled Expectation of Horizontal Wells with Multistage Fracture Completions in Conventional Reservoirs: A solution” Please RSVP here: https://Apr2019.bpt.me/  SPE-YP Meeting (4/30) – Adam Harper presenting on “Formation Water Reduction Technology in Shale Formations” Pease RSVP here: https://speypapr19.bpt.me Finally, I want to acknowledge the generous contributions made by the annual CO2 conference to our yearly scholarship fund. Having contributed $600,000 over the last several years, the CO2 conference has been one of the largest contributors to our yearly scholarship fund. Fellow CO2 conference board, I salute you all.

Guest luncheon and program cost is $30 to be paid to the treasurer at the meeting – cash or check only – no credit cards please!! There is no charge for members. Reception begins at 11:15, Buffet lunch starts at 11:30 and the program begins at noon. Abstract: Hubbert’s peak theory is often used to describe the life cycle of any exhaustible resource. The bell-shaped curve is characterized by an initial growth phase, a peak, and is followed by a period of irreversible decline. Plotting Permian Basin oil production from 1945 to 2007 shows an ominous fit with Hubbert’s curve. This was the backdrop when Concho Resources made its initial public offering (2007) hoping the confluence of technology, favorable subsurface characteristics, and scale would defy the odds. Today that combination has transformed Concho, now a Fortune 500 company, into one of the largest independent producers in the U.S. and the Permian into one of the largest oil fields in the world. This presentation will look back at some of the obstacles and innovations that enabled Concho to be a key participant in the great rebirth of the Permian Basin. Biography: Chris Spies is Vice President of Geoscience and Technology for Concho Resources Inc. He came to Concho in 2013 as a Geologic Advisor and later held the positions of Geoscience Manager and Chief Geoscientist. Chris leads multidisciplinary teams tasked with resource management, reservoir characterization, and the implementation of advanced technologies. Mr. Spies previously worked in various geological roles of increasing responsibility for ExxonMobil, Burlington Resources/ConocoPhillips, and Apache. He holds a B.S. and M.S. in Geology from the University of Kansas.
