We are Making History!
By the time you read this, January will be behind us, and 2019 will already have been a historic year for
the Permian Basin. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), the Permian basin produced 3.8
million bbl/day in January. To put that in context, that’s more oil produced than the United Arab Emirates, the
Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries’ (OPEC) third-largest producer. Wow! The Permian Basin is
booming, and unemployment is incredibly low (unemployment in Midland is 2% vs. 3.7% countrywide). This,
however, has created significant challenges for our communities – understaffing is prevalent in many non-oil and
gas related businesses because frankly, oil field jobs usually pay more. Also the influx of people into the Permian
Basin (my family included) has started to overload our schools, hospitals, roads, and other infrastructure.
Notwithstanding, I am optimistic that our community will do what is necessary to adapt to these times. Many
organizations are already tackling these issues with innovative solutions, and as I wrote last month, the recently
founded Permian Strategic Partnership is one of them. With two more companies joining the alliance recently,
these 19 energy companies have formed “A partnership prepared to help during extraordinary times.” In case you
missed it in the November Midland Reporter Telegram (MRT) article, see more details about the partnership here:
https://goo.gl/k1sar4. I am excited about this partnership, and became even more elated when it was announced
that the former U.S. Commerce Secretary, Don Evans, will serve as its Chair. I will never forget hearing Mr. Evans
speak in person over two years ago at MarketPlace Midland. I highly recommend you watch that speech here:
http://www.marketplacemidland.com/past-speakers/.
As you have probably seen by now, Frac Month is back. All our study group and section meetings will
center on hydraulic fracturing. Please see below for more details:
Water Panel Discussion (2/13) – Georgi Watson, Schlumberger; Jose Ortega, Terra Midstream; Christopher
Small, Pioneer Natural Resources; Cindy Pena, Select Energy Services. Please RSVP here: https://

Section Meeting (2/21) – Y.U. Pradhan & Y. Scherz presenting on “Evaluating the Impact of Frac
Communication between Parent, Child, and Vertical Wells in the Midland Basin Lower Spraberry and
Wolfcamp Reservoirs.” Please RSVP here: https://feb2019.bpt.me/
SPE-YP Meeting (2/26) –Liberty Oilfield Services presenting on “Frac Trends in the Permian Basin: A Focus on
Further $/BOE Minimization.” Please RSVP here: https://spepbypfeb19.bpt.me/
Once again, please join me in recognizing and appreciating Occidental Petroleum for sponsoring Frac
Month for the second year in a row! Following Frac Month, we are excited to have Ryan Duman of Wood
Mackenzie presenting at our Section Meeting in March. The topic is “The follow-on effects of faster tight oil
decline rates: growing project spend and more M&A.” See more details inside this newsletter, and RSVP here:
https://Mar2019.bpt.me/. Finally, I am glad to report that we kicked off the year with historic attendance at our
January 16th
Section Meeting! We had 135 people in attendance for the Steve Melzer discussion, and we filled up
the Wildcatter room at the Petroleum Club. The only other event that was more exciting for me in January was the
Sugar Bowl game. How ‘bout them Longhorns?! I wonder if it is too early to declare that “We’re back!”...

“Evaluating the Impact of Frac Communication Between Parent, Child, and Vertical Wells in the
Midland Basin Lower Spraberry and Wolfcamp Reservoirs”
Abstract:
In the Midland Basin, infill wells have high potential of experiencing well-to-well fracture interference or
“frac hits”. Rock stress alteration around parent wells affect child fracture interactions thus impacting
completion effectiveness, well productivity, and well spacing. Endeavor Energy Resources (EER) had a
unique opportunity to study parent (hereafter referred to as primary) and child (hereafter referred as infill
or active well) interactions and the effects of producing vertical wells on fracture behavior. By sharing this
case study, the authors want other operators who are facing common issues, to leverage these learnings.
The basis of the presentation is from SPE-194349-MS.
Biographies:
Yvonne Scherz is a Sr Staff Reservoir Engineer at Endeavor Energy
Resources. She is a registered professional engineer with over 40
years’ experience in various roles in the Industry. Ms. Scherz began
her career at Mobil Oil and has worked at large independents
including The Superior Oil Co., Mitchell Energy, Total USA, Kinder
Morgan and EP Energy. Prior to joining Endeavor, she was a
consultant evaluating unconventional properties in the Marcellus,
Haynesville, Eagle Ford, and the Permian Basin.
Yogashri Pradhan is a reservoir engineer for Endeavor Energy
Resources, where she is involved with field development planning for
unconventionals in the Midland Basin. She has also worked as a
senior production engineer for Texas Oil and Gas Institute and Devon
Energy. She is also a 2018 recipient of the Young Member
Outstanding Service Award from SPE International. Ms. Pradhan
holds a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering from the
University of Texas at Austin and is pursuing her master’s degree in
petroleum engineering from Texas A&M University.

Ryan Duman, Wood Mackenzie
“The follow-on effects of faster tight oil decline rates: growing
project spend and more M&A”
Abstract:
Decline rates in Permian wells are accelerating. At a project level, continued downspacing, more intensive
completions, higher stimulated rock volumes, and aggressive lift strategies have resulted in positive
impacts to early well life productivity, but they may be coming at the expense of late-life volumes. Upsized
completions have contributed to double-digit improvements in early cumulative 180 day volumes, but the
longer term implications are less ideal with lower EURs. We have observed this in b-factor benchmarking
and type curve analysis.
Is this acceleration of early volumes – combined with forecast increases in drilling and completions activity
across the entire Permian – creating an even steeper treadmill effect for operators? How are changing well
profiles going to impact the ability for the Permian region to sustain growth? Will companies need to invest
more to keep growing at the pace they did in 2018? Wood Mackenzie's base case view is that the Permian
Basin production profile begins to plateau as early as 2023, but if today's well underperform as they
mature, the cost to continue this growth will materially rise regarding both capex/boe as well as total
drilling and completion expenses across the entire region.
One outcome could be an extended period of M&A, where consolidation helps fill production gaps that
emerge.
Biography:
Ryan Duman is a principal analyst in Wood Mackenzie's U.S. Lower 48 Upstream team, where he works
with specifically with E&P's, service companies and investors in the Rocky Mountain region. Mr. Duman
specializes in basin characterization, decline curve analysis, economic modeling, and competitor
intelligence. He has previously managed the North American supply team and has extensive experience
modeling E&P company positions and building short- and long-term oil and gas supply forecasts. Mr.
Duman holds a bachelor's degree in environmental science from the University of Michigan and a master's
degree in natural resource economics from Michigan Tech University.
