PROJECT TITLE: WEEE-Trace
(www.weee-trace.eu)
TYPE/PROGRAMME: CIP Eco-Innovation (http://ec.europa.eu/environment/eco-
DURATION: innovation) - Executive Agency for Competitiveness and
Innovation
Duration: 36 months (July 2011 – July 2014)
WEEE TRACE project intends to make use of Information and
Communication Technologies i.e. radiofrequency tagging or image
recognition; to ensure cradle-to-grave traceability of waste from electrical
and electronic equipment (WEEE) flows in order to raise their collection
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
levels to 65%/85% as required by new legislation, guarantee these
wastes are conveyed to the appropriate treatment plants and minimize
illegal exports or leaks to substandard treatment. Additionally, proper
identification of WEEE at treatment plants facilitates the identification of
hazardous substances and achieving increased reuse, recycling and
recovery targets.
Project will run pilot experiences in Spain and in the Czech Republic and
will implement the solution at the complete waste collection and
treatment chain of Ecolec in Spain. It is intended to use these
experiences to apply the solution to other European WEEE compliance
schemes or to other waste streams with similar control and traceability
requirements.
ACTIVITIES OF THE
ENTITY RELEVANT
FOR THE EIP RM
Recycling. Increase of and better access to recycled
RECICLING
materials.
Some potential for substitution of virgin materials by recycling
materials in the manufacturing of appliances or increase in
reuse rates.
11. Increase collection levels and proper treatment of
RELEVANT OBTAINED/EXPECTED RESULTS WEEE by 52,000 tonnes/year (a 32% increase vs.
2009 baseline).
Increase recycling or reuse rates of collected
WEEE by 5%.
Reduction in treatment costs of waste fridges
between 4 to 10 €/unit as a result of increased
RECICLING collection volumes, improvements in logistics,
better identification of treatment needs and
minimization of administration compliance burden.
Avoidance of emissions of 53,200 tonnes of CO2-
equivalent per year as a result of the collection and
treatment of CFC in waste fridges (12% additional
emissions avoidance vs. 2009 baseline).
Avoidance of emissions of 5,800 tonnes/year of
CO2 as a result of the increase in recycling levels
and recovery of materials (29% additional
emissions avoidance vs. 2009 baseline).
Over an addressable market of 29 customers with
similar needs across Europe, Project expects to
achieve 2 additional replication opportunities
during its 36 months duration.
