And, no, we're not going to talk about music…
or maybe yes…

6. Stereotypes
What is an “stereotype”?
– “To believe unfairly that all people or things with a
particular characteristic are the same…” www.merrian-webster.com
8. 12 Stereotypes about the Spanish that
are definitely NOT true

1. We all know how to dance
the Flamenco.
2. Bullfighting is universally
loved
3. We are lazy and take naps
daily.
4. We eat paella every day.
5. We’re constantly drinking
sangria.
6. We eat tacos.
7. We all have dark skin, brown
eyes and black hair.
8. We’re very religious and
attend mass frequently.
9. We only live in Madrid and
Barcelona.
10. We spend all our time
partying.
11. It is veeeery hot.
12. Rafa Nadal/Marc Marquez
is our only athlete.
9. Flamenco
●

● There are other regional dances: In
Madrid, it’s the chotis; in Galicia, the
muiñeira; the jota in Aragón and the
sardana in Catalonia, just to give a few
examples.
● You can see here young traditional
music in Galicia.
● No, we don’t. This dance is
native to the south of Spain.

10. Bullfighting
Actually, bullfighting is
quite controversial in
Spain.
There are anti-bullfighting
associations throughout
the country, and in regions
like Catalonia and the
Canaries bullfights are
prohibited.
11. We are lazy and take naps daily
● We cannot take one
every day (we wish!).
● This painting's tittle is
“La siesta”. The
author was the
spanish painter
Ramón Martí Alsina.

12. We eat paella everyday
● Paella is a Valencian rice
dish with ancient roots
that originated in its
modern form in the mid-
19th century near
Albufera lagoon on the
east coast of Spain
adjacent to the city of
Valencia.

13. We eat paella everyday
● Not even close. It’s
common in Valencia, but
every region has its own
cuisine and its own
specialities. If we had to
choose a national dish, it
would undoubtedly be the
Spanish tortilla (which
consists of eggs, potato
and onion).

14. And not only tortilla...
● In Galicia, my region, we
eat empanada, “pulpo á
feira” octopus, galician
sausage, caldo and lots
and lots of seafood.

15. And even not only drink sangria

Actually we prefer wine or
beer or simply water.
Sangría is for tourists or
for picnics in the
countryside with young
people.SOURCE: www.aguasdemondariz.com
16. We eat tacos
This is not Mexico. We may speak the same language, but
that doesn’t mean that we eat the same food

20. We're very religious and attend
mass frequently
Spain is filled with
churches from north to
south. However, Spain is
a secular country with
religious freedom, only
the 10% of the
population regularly
attends mass.
The 70% of the
population in Spain
claims to be catholic.

21. We only live in Madrid and Barcelona
Spain has 47 million inhabitants, according to data from the
National Statistic Institute (INE), and of those people, only 4.8% million reside in
these cities. That's just 10% of the population. SOURCE OF THE MAP: www.zonu.com
