Space farming involves growing crops in environments outside of Earth, such as other planets. It presents unique challenges due to differences in available resources like soil, sunlight, and gases. Space farming is being explored due to increasing population and limited food resources on Earth. Experiments are conducted at facilities that simulate conditions on Mars, like the Mars Desert Research Center in Utah. Research is also performed on the International Space Station to test growing plants in microgravity.

2. SPACE FARMING
It is nothing but the cultivation of crops and field management outside the Earth or simply other
celestial bodies.
• Each environment would have differences in the availability of inputs to the space
agriculture process: inorganic material needed for plant growth, soil media, insolation,
relative availability of carbon dioxide, nitrogen and oxygen, and so forth.
• It also involves the response shown by the plant towards various space aspects such as zero
gravity, radiation from stars etc….

4. WHY SPACE FARMING??
• The reason is quite easy: 1.Increasing population;
2.Scarce of food resources.
• And also it is a measure to conserve the natural
bio-reserve such as forest….it had been
destroyed by various factors such as slash and
burn agriculture and also part of urban
development.
• So through space farming: Advantages: Unlimited
area; Disadvantages: Implementation.

5. MARS DESERT RESEARCH CENTER (MDRC)

6. MDRC
• It is situated in Utah, United States.
• It is named so because of the similarities of topography in Mars.
• Its extension is also situated in various continents according to the nature of
Mars.
• Simple structure having two main blocks consisting of a greenhouse, research
lab…and there is a connecting underground tunnel between the two blocks.
• It is part of Mars Society under the project MARS.
• Objective: ‘living on mars’.
• It was also established to conduct research in growing plants in an
environment closely similier to Mars.
