Glenwood Neighborhood - Danville, VA
Summer 2016, DRF interns explored and identified the unrealized, and often overlooked, resources in the smaller neighborhoods around the Dan River Region by engaging in Asset Based Community Development (ABCD). ABCD is an approach to community improvement which focuses on the identification of a neighborhood’s strengths, rather than its needs.
Interns were assigned to teams that worked within local neighborhoods to identify the skills, personalities, associations, institutions, structures and relationships that make up that particular community. This information will help DRF and residents gain insight into the resources available, and those still needed, to help the neighborhood thrive.
DRF believes that interns working at this grassroots level can contribute to our efforts to make significant changes in that community’s civic capacity. Therefore they are contributing towards the work of DRF’s larger, overall goal of a more vibrant and revitalized Dan River Region.

The Aimhigher scheme, which provided financial support to students from low-income families to encourage university attendance, will end later this month. The £600,000 annual funding helped over 1,400 students in the region apply to university last year, a 66% rise since the program began. Teachers fear the loss of Aimhigher will crush the aspirations of hundreds of students to attend university by eliminating funding for trips, mentoring programs, and university visits. Without these opportunities, many students will never consider careers requiring higher education.
Southwell Flood Action Group
The community of Southwell in Nottinghamshire has experienced two major flood events in 2007 and 2013 that damaged over 300 homes. In response, local residents came together to form the Southwell Flood Forum to make the community more resilient to future flooding. The Forum has undertaken extensive volunteer work clearing waterways, established fundraising events raising over £22k, and created a community resilience plan with over 60 trained flood wardens. While continued challenges remain around maintaining engagement and mitigating complex flood risks, the Forum looks forward to partnering with other organizations to further strengthen Southwell's resilience.

These sorts of activities could support anything from child cancer research, to the local tennis club, to environmental causes, to efforts to assist the underprivileged etc etc. They are all important and they all make a difference!
Since our inception in September 2012 we have grown to have 21 Chapters in 8 countries and thus our growth has been significant but are just the first steps towards realising our vision of making volunteering a global norm!

Lansing Charitable Donation
The Lansing Foundation Board of Directors is deciding which charity to donate $500,000 to annually. They analyzed several alternatives including Wounded Warriors Project, Susan G. Komen, St. Jude Research Hospital, United Way, and YMCA based on criteria. YMCA best met the criteria by supporting a healthy lifestyle for all, providing a positive environment for children, and impacting the local community, including having a presence in Omaha. The board decided to donate $250,000 to healthcare, $150,000 to childcare, $70,000 to family programs, and $30,000 to education programs through the YMCA to benefit the community.
