Thriller Conventions Within The Film:
Characters:
The main protagonist is a white male, and he is set with the task of saving
everyone on the train by himself.
Female character puts protagonist in a pressured situation, acts as the typical
damsel in distress.
The antagonist is hidden for almost the entire film, this adds to the entire
experience of the film as you’re trying to work out who it is, along with the
protagonist.
PlotLine:
The motive of the entire film is that the protagonist is being righteous, and he
is trying to stop the train in order to save the people inside.
The story is very quickly introduced, not much is explained. This keeps the
audience in the dark about what they’re seeing as the protagonist doesn’t
know either.
Setting:
Set on a train, the public environment puts more pressure on the protagonist
as there is more than just his life at risk. This provides added anticipation as
you can’t imagine civilians being killed in a train crash being a typical ending.
Camera/Sound:
Sound is used throughout to get across the feelings of the character, for
example when the train first crashes, sound is used to depict confusion of the
main character.
Camerawork is very dynamic throughout, and it involves a heavy amount of
close-ups, this is used to show the hectic nature and the emotion in the face
of the protagonist.
Mise-en-scené:
Everyone looks executive, wearing suits on a more upper class looking train.
Only one woman who is in smarter clothing, wearing a skirt not trousers.
Male character shown to be the hero, female shown to be weaker and needs
to be saved.
