 As defined under Resource Conservation and Recovery
Act (RCRA), Solid wastes are any solid, semi-solid,
liquid, or contained gaseous materials discarded from
industrial, commercial, mining, or agricultural
operations, and from community activities.
 A subset of solid wastes that pose substantial or potential
threats to public health or the environment is known as
hazardous solid waste.
 Unites States Environment Protection Agency regulates
household, industrial, and manufacturing solid and
hazardous wastes under RCRA.
INTRODUCTION

 Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) more commonly known
as trash or garbage consists of everyday items we use
and then throw away, such as product packaging, grass
clippings, furniture, clothing, bottles, food scraps,
newspapers, appliances, paint, and batteries. This comes
from our homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses.
 Hazardous waste is generated from many sources,
ranging from industrial manufacturing process wastes to
batteries and may come in many forms, including
liquids, solids gases, and sludges.

 The total generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) in 2018 was
292.4 million tons (U.S. short tons, unless specified) or 4.9 pounds
per person per day. Of the MSW generated, approximately 69
million tons were recycled and 25 million tons were composted

COST INVOLVED IN SWM

 In California, disposal fees from 2021 averaged $310
per ton for restricted hazardous waste and extremely
hazardous waste.[1]
 Waste hauler transportation fees in Illinois can range as
high as $800 to $1,000 for reactive hazardous waste.[2]
 However, hazardous waste transportation fees can cost
between $65 to $200, again depending on company, type
and weight/volume of hazardous waste, and frequency
of pick-ups.
