The Solar Market Garden combines solar-powered water pumping and drip irrigation to allow farmers in remote, dry areas to grow crops year-round. It consists of a solar panel array powering a water pump that fills an underground reservoir, from which water is gravity-fed through a drip irrigation system to water crops. Installed systems in Benin draw water from either surface streams or underground wells to irrigate half-hectare gardens, paying for themselves within 2-3 years through high-value crop sales.
