Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in 1797, freed in 1826, and became a preacher in 1828. She was a prominent civil rights and women's rights activist known for her 1851 speech "Ain't I a Woman?" advocating for equal rights and challenging the idea that women were weak and incapable. Sojourner Truth died in 1883 at her home in Battle Creek, Michigan after a life dedicated to fighting for the rights of African Americans and women.
