Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in 1797, walked to freedom in 1826, became a preacher in 1828, and changed her name in 1843. She was a prominent civil rights and women's rights activist known for her 1851 speech "Ain't I A Woman" and her published memoir. Sojourner Truth died at her home in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1883.
