This paper is not put together in defence of polygamy for Allah has already confirmed its validity as clearly stated in the Noble Quran: “Marry of the women that please you, two, three or four, but if you fear that you will not be able to deal justly with them, then only one.” Moreover, the Prophet (PBUH) demonstrated in detail how polygamy should be put into practice by his divinely guided lifestyle. The average family structure today is different than 250 years ago. Society has shifted from pre-industrial to industrial structures. In pre-industrial, agricultural societies, the extended family and interdependent community were the norm. With industrialization, work moved to factories in cities, families became more nuclear and isolated. Functionalists theorize the nuclear family best fits industrial needs, allowing social mobility. However, critics argue functionalists overlook diversity in family forms and negative aspects of modern family life.

Assessment involves a genogram to identify multigenerational patterns.
