Objective of TARUMITRA
TARUMITRA is a nationwide student’s organization to promote
ecological sensitivity in India. It has been campaigning for
sensitizing various sections of society on ecological issues. It
was started in 1988 by students in Patna, India. U.N has
conferred a special consultative status to TARUMITRA from
2005. It has over 2,00,000 members in over 1000 high schools
and colleges. TARUMITRA has also had several full-time
volunteers from abroad.
TARUMITRA has also set up a bio- reserve in Patna in a plot of
land given to them by the Patna Jesuits. It has a rare collection
of over 400 vanishing trees and plants of North India. The center
has a large genetic nursery, a Tissue culture lab and facilities to
accommodate 50-100 students for nature related campus.
Tarumitra, meaning "Friends of Trees" in Hindi and Sanskrit, is
a student movement to protect and promote a healthy
environment on Earth. Started by students in Patna, India in
1988, the movement has spread into hundreds of high schools
and colleges all over India.
TARUMITRA main objective is to protect trees and variety of
plants. It is a student movement to protect and promote a
healthy environment on Earth. It aims in spreading information

about ecological sensitivity and organizing campaigns for the
preservation of bio- diversity.
It co-ordinates the movement through students and schools help
the cause by joining it. No wonder, most of the schools feel
proud of being a part of this environment movement.
When I visited in TARUMITRA for the first time I was green
horn but with the help of philanthropic it made me understood
another aspect of life which is completely different and pensive.
For me being in the campus was momentous. The work which is
done was not mnemonic but was sombre. It also made felt
corroborated to nature. The campus is limpid.

INTRODUCTION
TARUMITRA, meaning “Friendsof Trees” in Hindi and
Sanskrit, is a student movement to protect and promote a healthy
environment on earth. It was effort of Jesuit Fr. Robert Athickal
from St. Xavier’s school, Patna and students from few schools
under the leadership of Anindo Banerjee that the movement
came into existence in 1988. In April 1989, four high school
students from Loyola High School set out on a cycle rally in
North India from Patna to New Delhi to promote awareness
about the environment and the movement.
TARUMITRA has expanded from the city of Patna to the
remote areas of the country. It has joined hands with similar
organizations to support the cause. It also takes part in
International summits on environment.

Activities and initiatives
TARUMITRA began with a few activities which included 9 day
workshop on how to paint trees, fruits and flowers, making a
mouse trap with boxes, event organized for school kids in
TARUMITRA, helped in the process of creating manure and
fertilizers. It also takes along the children of the area to promote
and protect the environment of Attapady.
To inspire and educate the children TARUMITRA members
regularly visit different schools in the locality. TARUMITRA
Day, an annual event organized by AADI (Attapadi Adivasi
Development Initiatives), brings together more than thousand
students to taru-mitra campus for one full day for environmental
activities.
The activists of TARUMITRA has taken out massive rallies,
organized protest demonstrations, resisted the felling of trees
and forests, built road side gardens, cleaned up garbage dumps,
planted rare variety of trees, taken house-to-house awareness
schemes to name a few. TARUMITRA has developed several
garbage dumps into beautiful roadside gardens called “oxygen
belt”. Each garden is maintained by school or a plant nursery.
TARUMITRA maintains a total of 38 oxygen belts.

TARUMITRA has perspicacious people, who advise and it’s
like oracle and the organization is serving our Mother Earth. The
activities are repercussion.

Work at TARUMITRA
Work at TARUMITRA was quite tough at the beginning as I
had to plant trees in genetic nursery. So I had to do a lot of hard
work to learn the name of the different variety of plants and also
I had to separate them according to their types. I had to put soil
in packets to plant seeds and hardly had I known that what
amount of soil will be put or how to mix the fertilizers with the
soil. On the 1st
day of our work we had given a demonstration of
our work that what we are going to do. I also take the help of
Margret mam to learn what amount of soil will be mix up with
what percentage of fertilizers.
Then, we did the cleaning of the campus. Lifting up bamboos
was quite difficult to me but we were divided into groups and
with the help of our group members we did that and also learn to
keep our campus and surroundings clean.
We also cleaned the house, arranged the bricks for construction
work. Then we separate the leaves for sampling of plant from
the trees and plant that leaf into a small packets, watered the
plant. So, I had to spend 3-4 hours per day. Also we learnt new
things about plants that how to plant it and take care of it that
was quite interesting and difficult also. The experience was
ebullience because we were working in the scholar guidance and
green fingers. The whole area in TARUMITRA campus is
13. 13
fostered so well. Sometimes we also inculcate and make the
work perspicuous. Sometimes the advices or the inculcated ideas
made us erudite and then I needed help. I was trying to have
couched in all activities. The work done is imminent.
Suggestions for TARUMITRA
14. 14
Though we experienced many new things about the
TARUMITRA my suggestions for TARUMITRA would be we
should be given more information about the plants in genetic
nursery and also about the uses of plant that which plant is used
for what purpose?
The campus should be more cleaned and well arranged.
Conclusion
15. 15
The work done in TARUMITRA is quite interesting as well as
difficult as it was the first time that I have been doing this and I
had to do everything very carefully and perfectly. Though this
short time work was filled with a number of difficulties I
enjoyed thoroughly doing it with a lot of enthusiasm and
interest. I also love to get involved with this NGO anytime in
future. I had learnt about varieties of plants and their plantation.
At last I would like to thank Miss Margret, Miss Dev Priya &
Mr. Shashi Darshan for helping me and allowing me an
opportunity to work in TARUMITRA which enriched my
knowledge a lot.
