Ask how many have a Facebook page? Or LinkedIn? If so, what do they do with them?
Although cell and landline phones were seriously affected, internet services were largely unaffected in areas where basic infrastructure remained, despite the earthquake having damaged portions of several undersea cable systems landing in the affected systems; these systems were able to reroute around affected segments onto redundant links. Several Wi-Fi hotspot providers reacted to the quake by providing free access to their networks. Thus, people could use social media to let people know how they were doing.
Egyptian Revolution started with students in Egypt organized a rally to overturn the existing leader Hosni Mubarak; it grew exponentially through the plea in Facebook

This slide shows how employers are increasingly using social media to SOURCE employees (find talent that would fill the job requirements and fit the corporate culture).
LinkedIn is by far the biggest choice of employers to use to find talent for their companies.
The percentage of employers who are actively hiring, almost 9 out of 10 use social media sites to recruit. This is up 6% from the year before. It is estimated that the number will grow another 6% this year. Contrasting social media with traditional job boards, employers plan to use job boards less, making knowledge of job searching via social networks more important.
It is up to you whether you want to have a professional Facebook profile; many do not. If you work in a visual arts medium such as photography, other sites such as Flickr might be more relevant. (more on online resumes and domain names later)It is highly important to make your online presence very user-friendly. No matter where the employer finds your information, you must have links to your other profiles and sites.
You can post your resume on any profile you have. LinkedIn takes your professional information and turns it into something of an ‘online resume’. Wherever you post it, make sure it has plenty of keywords that are relevant to your position, making your profiles more searchable (on people searches, Google, etc)
Employers want to know all they can about you as a candidate and potential employee. If you show you really know what you’re talking about, that helps them decide to use your expertise! It also helps others in your network know more about you.
Networking is more than just getting connected with a person and then asking for a job. Make friends, share knowledge and resources, and let your network get to know you.
Employers want to be sure your knowledge of your field is current. Keeping up to date using news feeds and discussing them in your profiles shows that.
This information comes from a paper published by Carnegie Mellon University called “Job Search Game: Job Search on Online Social Networks”, which recommends this 5-step process to enhance the outcome of using social media for job search.
The word ‘LinkedIn’ has a link to www.linkedin.com. If there’s time you can do a LinkedIn demonstration
The word ‘blog’ is shortened for ‘web log’ and is basically an online diary or journal. As such you can write about anything you like. You can also share photos and media in most blogging sites as well. The importance behind blogging is showing how much you know about your work. You can use it like answering questions to behavioral interview questions– write about a time when you assisted an angry customer, for example.
Log out of your personal social media profiles and then Google yourself. See what appears as an outsider would. If you don’t like what you see, either remove or tighten the privacy settings on your account.
How to improve your profile from an employers’ perspective. 80% of respondents reacted positively to seeing memberships to professional organizations, while 67% like to see volunteering or donating to a nonprofit. They also want to consistent activity on their profiles and that their personality is well-rounded and diversified.
