Chris Underhill was a social entrepreneur who dedicated 40 years to helping marginalized people in poorer countries. On a study trip, he saw mentally challenged children begging on the streets, which motivated him to establish organizations to help the less fortunate. In 2000, he founded Basic Needs, which uses a 5-pronged approach through community healthcare, livelihood programs, research, and collaboration to help over 657,000 people in countries like Ghana, Tanzania, India and China. The presenter was inspired by Underhill's dedication and participates in charitable projects through Boys Brigade, which have been both fulfilling and eye-opening experiences.

2. Our group has decided to deliver to our audience our slideshow on a social
entrepreneur who has caught our eye as an advocate for the less fortunate
people.
• His name is Chris Underhill.
He was an entrepreneur for over forty years.
Having grown up in a privileged environment,
he was well sheltered from the outside
world and did not realise the hardships
that many other children were facing in
poverty stricken nations.

3. Turning Point
• This all changed when, on an overseas study-immersion trip, he came
across a bunch of mentally-challenged young kids. He felt really sad at
how they were made to beg and plead on the streets in order to
survive, due to their mental disability.
• He felt that something had to be done, thus he took it upon himself
to set up organizations and foundations for the less fortunate, as he
was willing to sacrifice 40 years of his time and effort to accomplish
this task.

4. Beginning of entrepreneurship
• At the turn of the century in 2000, Chris set up a foundation for
marginalised people. This organization revolved around helping needy
people in poorer countries, like Ghana, Tanzania, India and China.
He felt that much had to be done in order to break the poverty cycle that
was so inherent in third world nations. Poverty brings with it heightened
stress, social exclusion, malnutrition, violence and trauma, all of which
contribute to mental illness.
It is a vicious cycle: people living with mental illness experience widespread
stigma and discrimination, suffer violence and abuse, and find it harder to
get work, get an education or contribute to their family and community.
They are more prone to other forms of illness and disease, and find it
harder to access health care.

5. Methods of Approach
• Basic needs takes a holistic approach towards community-based
healthcare and through its programmes, ensures that its patients are
well cared for.
Since it started in 2000, Basic needs has helped over 657,000 people.
It does so through a 5-pronged interlinking module :

5) Collaboration

6. Personal Empathy
• Chris dedication and perseverance in seeking help for the less
fortunate people has really inspired us teens to reach out and lend a
helping hand to others in need.
For the past few years, me and my
buddies in Boys Brigade have been
actively participating in Boys Brigade
Share-a-Gift projects.

7. Conclusion 28/12/16
• This venture as well as the magnanimity of Chris Underhill has really
opened my eyes to the plight of others and taught me to be more
caring and benevolent towards others who might be in need of help.
The BBSG project has been an extremely fulfilling project as well as an
eye opening experience as it becomes really satisfying to oneself to
know that we able-bodied youth are able to distribute gifts to the
needy, knowing that our efforts are bringing joy to others and putting
smiles on their faces.
