• Developing countries rarely have welfare systems and so
people with mental illness have to struggle, not only with their
condition, but with their poverty.

countries and this year we have been able to initiate work in
China and Pakistan, as well as beginning work on our first

5. Why did he do that?(His
inspirations)
• Chris Underhill said from one of his interview:
• "Mental illness is a problem that is often ignored, particularly
in the poorest countries. At the heart of our work is
consultation with mentally ill people and the drive to work
with them to help solve their problems"
6. How did it benefit the people
• Chris Underhill has created a movement in the field of mental
health that expands existing talent in local communities and
puts the mentally ill and their families in charge of resolving
challenges. Chris has spread his model across the developed
and developing world, and in this process normalized the
integration of the mentally ill into society as active and
engaged citizens.
• From his experience of living and working in developing
countries and working with the disabled, Chris understood
that resources for care needed to be geographically
decentralised so that care could be provided by and made
accessible in the community.
