3. You may wonder what are these sectors.Let me tell about
them.
Informal Sector:The unorganised sector where the economic
activities are not regulated, recognised and not taxed by the
government.
4. Formal Sector:The organised sector where
the economic activities are regulated,
recognised and taxed by the government.
5. In India women make up a large part of
informal sector. They can be seen
working as domestic workers, agriculture
labourers,labourers in construction sites.
6. Domestic workers:Domestic worker is a person who is
paid to help with cleaning and other menial tasks in a
person's home.
Agricultural labourers: Agricultural labourers are
those who work on the land of the other people for
money. These people are also called as tenant
farmers.
Construction labourers: Construction labourers are
those people who do physical labour in construction
sites like cleaning them, loading and unloading tools
etc.
7. Their condition is worse than that of the men in informal
sector. They usually face horrific abuses and discrimination
like caste, gender and colour discrimination. Some of the
reasons for the worse conditions of the women in the
informal sector are listed below:
1)They are paid less money than men for the same amount of
work.
2)In addition to hard work outside the home they are also
expected to do the house hold work when they come home.
8. 3)In most cases , their income is
expected to be handed over to the
male members in their families ,
leaving them with little economic
independence.
9. Now, let’s discuss about the women who are working in formal
sector.
As a result of improving educational opportunities and as a
result of educating women and some laws and programmes like
'Beti Bachao,Beti Padhao’,many women are finding
employment in the formal sector.
10. Women these days are playing a leading role in
research, banking, healthcare, education etc. Some of them are also
heads of some multinational companies and also are holding some senior
positions in government.Ex:Sudha murthyhave a great position in the
Infosys company. She is the chairperson of the company.
11. But Even though our constitution guarantees equality at the workplace
,in reality, also in formal sector women and men are treated
differently.Almost many of abuses,discriminations,and challenges
women face in the informal sector are also faced by women in the
formal sector. Some of the challenges and disadvantages of the formal
sector are given below:
1)There is usually a large and considerable gap between the salaries of
a woman and a man for the same work.
12. 2)According to the Global Wage Report 2016 which was
published by the International Labour Organisation,it tells
that,in India men earn 30% more than women for the same
work and same amount of work.
13. 3) Sexual harrasment of women at the workplace is a big
deterrent to equal opportunities at work.
4)Women are still responsible for taking care of the family
and for domestic chores even though she has to work outside
the house which takes long hours.
5)After marriage women are often compelled by family and
society to give up her dreams, career and her goal to start a
family.Women often have to make a choice between their
career and raising a family, but men hardly ever have to make
this choice.
14. Sexual Harrasment:Troubling a person by making
unwanted sexual advances or obscene marks.
Deterrent:Discourage, Prevention or Inhibit
Wage:Income,Salary,Fee,Earning
Compelled:occur by overwhelming pressure or urge
forcefully.
Chores:Household work or routine task.
15. Right Values
Ok!I have a question for you.Now Tell me who do the
house hold work in your house?
It is definitely our mothers, grandmothers, sisters or
sister-in-laws.Also in some of our houses they go to
work.
So,it is important not to undermine their value just
because they stay at home and don’t think that they do
not do any work at home.
We must appreciate the hardwork they do to ensure the
house runs smoothly. In order to do that,Thenak them
when they do something for you and help them as much
as you can
