INTRODUCTION OF WOMEN CAREER:-
The financial demands on the Indian families are becoming raise day by day. The sky rocketing cost of living,
increasing expenses on education of children, increasing cost of housing properties in India force every family
in India to look for ways and means of increasing the household income. As a result, women in India who were
mostly known as homemakers are forced to go for jobs and take up even careers that were considered only
suitable for men such as working in night shifts in call centers or BPOs.
Today’s women has scaled every peak, both literally, and figuratively. Barely two decades ago, most women
did not work unless it was to while away the time before getting married, or for financial reasons. But today
most women pursue a career not for these reasons, but for the challenge and satisfaction a job provides. There
are no taboos any longer against working women. It is this transformation in the social scene that has enabled
women to rightly take their place as contributing partners in the workplace, pouring into the economy an
immense flow of brain power and energy. Despite the progressive attitudinal change, it is significant to note
that barely 32% of the total working population are women. Here too, it may come as no surprise that a large
percentage constitute unskilled labour, and less than one percent of the total working women’s population in
India holds coveted corporate job. Traditionally the careers for women have been largely in the hospitality
sector, in personal services, as air hostesses or beauticians, in teaching, catering, selling and clerical jobs, where
the intrinsic personal qualities of women are among the requirements for the career. Whatever the field, it
remained mainly a job and not a career which could be fulfilling and satisfying. But in recent years, women
have pushed for greater challenges, making progressively strides in enlarging the scope and ambit of these
careers, and entering areas which hitherto were largely male domains.
THE ADVANTAGES OF A WORKING WOMAN
A working woman is always advantageous, which men do not realize. But before talking of the advantages, I
would like to clarify that when the woman works, the primary financial responsibility lays on her.
1. Responsibility: She understands the concept of responsibility and that’s why she is able to handle the
pressure of household cores and office works simmontenously. There is a saying that “ Don’t take tension
but take responsibility and act upon it” which properly fits to working women
2. Spending Onus: Since the primary financial responsibility lies on the woman, she analysis finance and
spend more responsibly. The household financial problems are been shared due this. A stable life can be
provided to the children. A working women is an asset to her family. She look after financial status of
house.
3. Maintenance: In case marriage breaks women don’t have to wait for men for maintenance if she is
financial stable. She can look after herself and don’t have to be dependent on anyone.
4. Attitude Shift: Working women shift attitude of people who think women cant work outside and look
after the financial condition of family. Some people also think that a working women cant handle home
properly, this attitude is changed now a days.
PROBLEMS FACED BY WORKING WOMEN
1. Mental harassment: The true equality has not been achieved even after 61 years of independence. In
order to achieve success in corporate sector, women feel that they must do better than their male
colleagues. This leads to higher expectations and efficiency by their bosses and subordinates. Working in
such conditions inevitably puts strain on women to greater extent as compared to men, thus making them
less eager in their career. No one thinks of upgrading their skills with technological advancement which
makes it easy to terminate woman’s employment and hire other persons. Maternity leave is seldom given.
Women’s issues do not occur on the priority list of most of the trade unions. A woman could still bear up
with these problems if she controls over money that she earns but in most cases, their salary is handed
over to father, husband or in laws. Therefore, main purpose for seeking employment to get independence
is nullified in many cases.
2. Sexual harassment: Today, almost all working women are prone to sexual harassment irrespective of
their status, personal characteristics and the types of their employment. They face sexual harassment on
way on transports, at working places, educational institutions, hospitals home and even in police stations
when they go to file complaints. It is shocking that the law protectors are violating and outraging modesty
of women. Public transport system is overcrowded and women become easy targets for physical
harassment. Most of the women tend to be concentrated in the poor service jobs whereas men are in an
immediate supervisory position, which gives them an opportunity to exploit their subordinate women.
There must be gender equality which includes protection from harassment and right to work with dignity.
Sexual harassment of a female at the place of work is incompatible with her dignity and needs to be
eliminated
3. Discrimination at Workplace: Women still face blatant discrimination at their workplaces. Indian women are
often deprived of promotions and growth opportunities at work places but this doesn’t apply to all working
women. A majority of working women continue to be denied their right to equal pay, under the Equal
Remuneration Act, 1976 and are underpaid in comparison to their male colleagues. This is usually the case in
factories and labor-oriented industries.
4. Safety of Working Women While Traveling:
Typically, the orthodox mindset in the Indian society makes it difficult for a working woman to balance her
domestic environment with the professional life. In some families, it may not be acceptable to work after six
o’clock. Those families that do accept these working hours may experience considerable anxiety every day about
a woman’s safety while traveling. So many issues affect a working woman because she is closely protected or
watched by her family and the society.
5. Women Make Less Money Than Men:
Most people already know without even looking at statistics that women earn less money than men, and that
women have fewer employment and advancement opportunities (despite the fact more women hold higher
degrees than men), but here are some other areas where women are disadvantaged that you might now know
about 8 in 10 single parent families are headed by women. Women are more likely to be unemployed during a
recession than are men. Women are more likely to be laid off when companies downsize. More women than men
work low-wage, part-time jobs. Fewer women than men meet the eligibility qualifications for unemployment
benefits (because they earn lower wages and often are only given part-time hours).During a recession men's
median salaries stagnant but women's salaries have already dropped 3%.
SOLUTION TO SOCIO- ECONOMIC PROBLEMS OF WOMEN IN INDIA
1. Education to women:
The government should give priority to women education. It should provide special incentives to girls to pursue
their education.
2. Social awareness campaigns:
There should be effective social of awareness campaigns promoting the cause of women. The campaigns may be
in respect of Anti- dowry campaigns. The educated women campaign. The widow marriage campaign. Anti- child
marriage campaign, etc.
3. Positive approach at workplace:
The employer's and male colleague and male colleagues should adopt a positive approach towards women at the
work place.
4. Effective role of NGO’s:
The NGO’s should take up the women related issues at various forums. They should assist the victimized women
and support them during the crisis.
5. Simplification in legal procedures:
The legal procedures relating to women complaints must be simplified so that the victim women can effectively
take the advantage of such procedures.

Barely two decades ago, most women did not work unless it was to while away the time before getting married, or for financial reasons. But today most women pursue a career not for these reasons, but for the challenge and satisfaction a job provides. There are no taboos any longer against working women. It is this transformation in the social scene that has enabled women to rightly take their place as contributing partners in the workplace, pouring into the economy an immense flow of brain power and energy. Despite the progressive attitudinal change, it is significant to note that barely 32% of the total working population are women. Here too, it may come as no surprise that a large percentage constitute unskilled labour, and less than one percent of the total working women’s population in India holds coveted corporate job. Traditionally the careers for women have been largely in the hospitality sector, in personal services, as air hostesses or beauticians, in teaching, catering, selling and clerical jobs, where the intrinsic personal qualities of women are among the requirements for the career. Whatever the field, it remained mainly a job and not a career which could be fulfilling and satisfying. But in recent years, women have pushed for greater challenges, making progressively strides in enlarging the scope and ambit of these careers, and entering areas which hitherto were largely male domains.
  • 3. THE ADVANTAGES OF A WORKING WOMAN A working woman is always advantageous, which men do not realize. But before talking of the advantages, I would like to clarify that when the woman works, the primary financial responsibility lays on her. 1. Responsibility: She understands the concept of responsibility and that’s why she is able to handle the pressure of household cores and office works simmontenously. There is a saying that “ Don’t take tension but take responsibility and act upon it” which properly fits to working women 2. Spending Onus: Since the primary financial responsibility lies on the woman, she analysis finance and spend more responsibly. The household financial problems are been shared due this. A stable life can be provided to the children. A working women is an asset to her family. She look after financial status of house. 3. Maintenance: In case marriage breaks women don’t have to wait for men for maintenance if she is financial stable. She can look after herself and don’t have to be dependent on anyone. 4. Attitude Shift: Working women shift attitude of people who think women cant work outside and look after the financial condition of family. Some people also think that a working women cant handle home properly, this attitude is changed now a days.
  • 4. PROBLEMS FACED BY WORKING WOMEN 1. Mental harassment: The true equality has not been achieved even after 61 years of independence. In order to achieve success in corporate sector, women feel that they must do better than their male colleagues. This leads to higher expectations and efficiency by their bosses and subordinates. Working in such conditions inevitably puts strain on women to greater extent as compared to men, thus making them less eager in their career. No one thinks of upgrading their skills with technological advancement which makes it easy to terminate woman’s employment and hire other persons. Maternity leave is seldom given. Women’s issues do not occur on the priority list of most of the trade unions. A woman could still bear up with these problems if she controls over money that she earns but in most cases, their salary is handed over to father, husband or in laws. Therefore, main purpose for seeking employment to get independence is nullified in many cases. 2. Sexual harassment: Today, almost all working women are prone to sexual harassment irrespective of their status, personal characteristics and the types of their employment. They face sexual harassment on way on transports, at working places, educational institutions, hospitals home and even in police stations when they go to file complaints. It is shocking that the law protectors are violating and outraging modesty of women. Public transport system is overcrowded and women become easy targets for physical harassment. Most of the women tend to be concentrated in the poor service jobs whereas men are in an immediate supervisory position, which gives them an opportunity to exploit their subordinate women. There must be gender equality which includes protection from harassment and right to work with dignity. Sexual harassment of a female at the place of work is incompatible with her dignity and needs to be eliminated
  • 5. 3. Discrimination at Workplace: Women still face blatant discrimination at their workplaces. Indian women are often deprived of promotions and growth opportunities at work places but this doesn’t apply to all working women. A majority of working women continue to be denied their right to equal pay, under the Equal Remuneration Act, 1976 and are underpaid in comparison to their male colleagues. This is usually the case in factories and labor-oriented industries. 4. Safety of Working Women While Traveling: Typically, the orthodox mindset in the Indian society makes it difficult for a working woman to balance her domestic environment with the professional life. In some families, it may not be acceptable to work after six o’clock. Those families that do accept these working hours may experience considerable anxiety every day about a woman’s safety while traveling. So many issues affect a working woman because she is closely protected or watched by her family and the society. 5. Women Make Less Money Than Men: Most people already know without even looking at statistics that women earn less money than men, and that women have fewer employment and advancement opportunities (despite the fact more women hold higher degrees than men), but here are some other areas where women are disadvantaged that you might now know about 8 in 10 single parent families are headed by women. Women are more likely to be unemployed during a recession than are men. Women are more likely to be laid off when companies downsize. More women than men work low-wage, part-time jobs. Fewer women than men meet the eligibility qualifications for unemployment benefits (because they earn lower wages and often are only given part-time hours).During a recession men's median salaries stagnant but women's salaries have already dropped 3%.
  • 6. SOLUTION TO SOCIO- ECONOMIC PROBLEMS OF WOMEN IN INDIA 1. Education to women: The government should give priority to women education. It should provide special incentives to girls to pursue their education. 2. Social awareness campaigns: There should be effective social of awareness campaigns promoting the cause of women. The campaigns may be in respect of Anti- dowry campaigns. The educated women campaign. The widow marriage campaign. Anti- child marriage campaign, etc. 3. Positive approach at workplace: The employer's and male colleague and male colleagues should adopt a positive approach towards women at the work place. 4. Effective role of NGO’s: The NGO’s should take up the women related issues at various forums. They should assist the victimized women and support them during the crisis. 5. Simplification in legal procedures: The legal procedures relating to women complaints must be simplified so that the victim women can effectively take the advantage of such procedures.
