Introduction
 Snakes
 Elongated, legless, carnivores, covered with the scales &
many have skull.
 Types
 20 families & 3600 species all around the world.
 Habitat
 Found every where, moist, water, desert and dry places.
Venom vs Poison
 Venom is lethal and injected to the body.
 Poison is inhaled or ingested to the body.
Nature of Snake Venom
 Snake are of 2 types according to the venom:
 Venomous snakes
 Non-venomous snakes
 Venomous snake insert venom to the pray.
 Nonvenomous snake kill pray by swelling or
constriction.

Cytotoxins Eg. Rattle
snakes
Types of Venom
Therapeutic use of venom
 Neurotoxins(Target the central nervous system. )
 Treat opium addiction, liver, lung, esophageal and skin
cancers as well as leukemia and arthritis.
 Hemotoxins(Target the circulatory system, contain
anti-clotting activity.)
 Treat heart attack, severe chest pain.
 Cytotoxins(Refers to a substance or process which
results in cell damage or cell death.)
 Breast cancer , Ovarian cancer
Back painsMenstrual painsHeadachesArthritis
Cure and Medication in Situation
 Do it R.I.G.H.T.”
R =Reassure the patient. 70% of all snakebites are from non-
venomous species. Only 50% of bites by venomous species
actually envenomate the patient.
I = Immobilise in the same way as a fractured limb. Use bandages
or cloth to hold the splints, not to block the blood supply or
apply pressure. Do not apply any compression in the form of
tight ligatures, they can be dangerous!
G.H. = Get to Hospital Immediately. Traditional remedies have
NO PROVEN benefit in treating snakebite.
T = Tell the doctor of any systemic symptoms such as ptosis that
manifest on the way to hospital.
Conclusion
 Perhaps venom is lethal to the health but it has many
medicinal use and different medicines are being used
by us composing of venom.
 Venom antibodies must be produce in the human
body to avoid the severe infection after bite.
 Venom secretion is self defense mechanism so they
should not be heated or killed with out any reason.

Editor's Notes

  1. 520 genera,
  2. And its extraction from the fangs and its collection is called as milking of venom. Mostly in liquid form, have different concentrations and have proteins and enzymes composition that can bind in human body and produce adverse results also.
  3. The have venom for their self defense and this is the secondary mechanism. Mostly they use to kill pray,
  4. There are basically three types of snake venom according to its effects
