This document provides a summary of a team's preliminary design review for a cigarette smoke detection system. It introduces the team members and outlines background information on the differences between cigarette and fire smoke. The problem is enforcing no-smoking policies in hotels. The requirements are for a low-cost detection unit and monitoring system that is more sensitive than existing detectors. The proposed design uses a laser-based photoelectric sensor to detect smoke and an ultraviolet/infrared sensor to detect flames. Wireless nodes would transmit data to a monitoring station using an IEEE 802.15.4 protocol and MiWi standard. The estimated budget is $1,400, within the $2,500 allocated budget.
