This document reviews the SMARTTM Volcano educational game. It summarizes the original games, which included definition matching, spelling practice, and picture identification activities targeted at 7th grade science lessons. It proposes changes to increase engagement and learning, such as placing definition matching questions on separate slides with text boxes for answers. It also recommends replacing the spelling activity with an educational video and increasing the number of images in the picture identification game while linking images to locations. The review emphasizes using multiple techniques like images, video and explanations to engage students and help them comprehend, retain and apply the lesson information.

2. Original Presentation
• Multiple games designed towards recognition and memorization
• Definition Matching, Spelling Practice, Picture Identification

3. Changes to the Games: Definition Matching
• Instead of providing the words for the pictures together on one page:
• Place a separate image on each slide
• Provide a text box for written answers
• After they click “Submit”, the correct answer is provided
• Create class discussion for why the answer is correct or incorrect
• Why Better?
• Separate slides provides better pacing for the lesson and increases focus on a
particular image.
• Answers for each question separately decreases wait time for answers,
increasing the learning rate and decreasing learning loss.

4. Spelling the Volcanoes
• Removal of this activity in favor of a video is preferred:
• The spelling does not adequately increase learning of their meaning
• A video can give multiple simple, memorable phrases connected to iconic
images.
• The break in interactivity from active consideration and examination to
passive allows the first lesson to settle and be connected to other examples.
• A Bill Nye style video is apt there.

5. Picture Identification
• The only edits necessary to this game:
• Increased number of images
• Connection of image to a location

6. Universal Design Considerations:
• Inclusion of these multiple techniques for learning increase the
amount and odds of a student comprehending, retaining, and
extrapolating knowledge from the lesson.
• For every text used, an image or video is employed.
• For every media object used, and explanation is created
