This was an idea I shared with the Recreation Director in South Orange New Jersey about starting a kickball league. Most of the numbers and name of teams are made up, but guidance from a more experienced recreation leader will help me make this into a more achievable program.

have begun. So
Much of what
we have al-

plished this year would not be possible
without the contributions from the mem-
bers of the 6th Man Club. Our 12 game
winning streak was very exciting. The
UTEP game this Saturday is an oppor-
tunity to begin a new streak. We need all
of you in the stands cheering on the Ag-
gies. The attendance at the Don Haskins
Center earlier this year was 9,366. Not
only do we want to beat UTEP on the
court, but we want to beat that attendance
number. Thank you for your support of
the 6th Man Club and Aggie Basketball!

son which was held by the 1994-1995
team.
Sim Bhullar also has the most blocks
of any Aggie Freshman ever with 57,
previously held by James Moore .
Sim needs 2 blocks to set the school
record for most block by an individu-
al in a single-season. Currently held
and set by Roland Grant 1973-74 sea-

Interview with Tony Delk
with Brian Adams
Tony Delk has had one of the most storied ca-
reers in college basketball. He led the 1995-
1996 Kentucky Wildcat team to an amazing 30
-1 record and a National Championship. He
was named the Tournament’s Most Outstand-
ing player as well as an All American. Tony
would go on to be drafted in the 1996 NBA
Draft #16 overall. To put this in perspective,
Kobe Bryant was selected in the same draftt at
#13th overall followed by Steve Nash who was
drafted #15th overall. He went on to
play over 10 years professionally. I
was fortunate enough to sit with As-
sistant Coach Tony Delk. I felt I had
a good plan going into this inter-
view. I told him this would be the
best interview he would ever take
part in. Unfortunately, I laughed
through most of it so my dreams of
being the next Walter Cronkite have
since subsided. I have had the opportuni-
ty to meet many former professional ath-
letes, but I have not met one as intelli-
gent and humbling as Tony. I have per-
sonally watched Tony work with many
of the players. The result of Tony’s work
has been very apparent during the 12
game win streak. He has also been a key
asset in the recruiting and scouting of
future prospects. He makes time to serve
as an academic advisor to players. Without
further ado my interview with Tony Delk:
Brian: Alright…red or green chili?
Tony: red chili, I had a green chili enchilada
last night actually. But it didn’t work for me.

Q&A with Tony Delk (continued)
Brian: You work pretty closely with the guards, what
do the guards need to do to continue to improve?
Tony: They need to take better care of the ball. Younger
players such as Terrel and KC did not play last year. So
they missed the experience of working with someone like
Hernst Laroache. Terrell had his knee injury and was not
able to be at practices to truly learn from Hernst. KC was
not able to practice last year either. So they are gaining the
experience they need as each game passes. But they are
learning. Every college team who has an experienced point
guard is a successful team.
Brian: Are you seeing improvement?
Tony: You know, you want them to progress as the season
goes along and they are doing that. Their instincts are im-
proving, and they are gaining experience with every game
and practice so I like where they are going.
Brian: I watched you and Billy Keys, play some legend-
ary 3 on 3 games this past summer against Daniel
Mullings, Eric Weary, and KC Ross-Miller (or Terrel
de Rouen). Do you use this as a learning experience to
exploit their weaknesses and make them work on those
specific things?
Tony: We knew their weaknesses since we are the veteran
guys. So we capitalized on those weaknesses, which we
were able to identify immediately. This is a great way to
improve on those deficiencies which existed in their game.
Billy has been playing for a long time, and he knew what to
do to make them uncomfortable. Just to be clear we won,
and they haven’t asked to play since.
Brian: What area do you feel needs improvement as we
prepare for the Conference Tournament?
Tony: Rebounding! Since I have been here we have been a
rebounding team and have had a wide rebounding margin
average. Teams have narrowed those margins recently, and many
teams come in making sure their emphasis is on the boards. So
we have to make sure our intensity and energy is just as high.
Brian: Did the road trip this past weekend (San Jose St and
Utah State) give the team some extra confidence in felling
they can play with anyone and anywhere?
Tony: The guys showed a lot of poise in both games. You can
only get this experience in games which create these unique situ-
ations. Utah State was a great test and they didn’t panic or give in
to the pressures of the game or the crowd.
Brian: Have you gotten used to the weather in Las Cruces?
Tony: I have lived in places like Boston and Detroit, where it
snows quite a bit. However, cold and snow are not a good mix-
ture for me. It’s bad for my skin. So this weather is perfect for
me. It gets pretty hot in the summer, but I like the weather. In the
end, it comes down to adapting.
Brian: Where does your career take you in 5 years?
Tony: At the collegiate level, I can definitely see being a Head
Coach. If it’s the NBA, maybe a scout or eventually a General
Managing position for some team.
Brian: You are always on the recruiting trail
do recruits recognize you?
Tony: More so the parents than the kids. This generation is not as
basketball savvy due to so many players leaving to go pro. The
previous generations had guys like Michael Jordan, Len Bias,
Kelvin Sampson, Hakeem Olajuwon. They were all well known
before they went pro, but now guys leave after their first year.
They look me up on Wikipedia after I meet them.
Brian: Do you edit your Wikipedia page?
Tony: No I should though.
