Professional baseball
returned to Boise after
an 11 year hiatus in
the form of the
Boise A’s. In front of a
crowd of 1,814, the A’s
dropped the game 8-3
to the Portland
Mavericks. But the
bigger story of the day
was base
umpire Christine Wren
who became the first
female umpire in the
Northwest League
and, at the time, the
only active female
umpire in pro ball.
At the advisement of
home plate umpire
Gary Lieberman,
security surrounded
Wren throughout the
two hour and 37
minute ball game.

Riley Pint
RHP - Saint Thomas Aquinas HS (FL)
Riley Pint’s biggest strength is his fastball. It’s not
just about velocity though; even when he’s throwing
it in the upper 90’s it has good movement. Pint has
a good feel for a changeup that should continue to
improve as he’s forced to throw it more.
Robert Tyler
RHP - University of Georgia (GA)
Like Pint, Robert Tyler is known for his big fastball
that has reached triple digits. Ranked as the 25th
best prospect by MLB Pipeline, Tyler’s fastball has
been graded as a 75 on a 20 to 80 scale. His
secondary pitches need development.
Ben Bowden
LHP - Vanderbilt University (TN)
Ben Bowden spent his first two years at Vanderbilt
working out of the bullpen. A strong showing in the
2015 Cape Cod League helped him earn a spot in
the Commodores rotation in 2016, but a lackluster
string of starts sent him back to the bullpen as a
closer.
Garrett Hampson
SS - California State University, Long Beach (CA)
Garrett Hampson profiles better as a second
baseman according to scouting reports, or he could
be used as a utility man. Hampson played short,
second, and third in summer 2015 for the USA
Collegiate National Team in the Americas Baseball
Festival in Cary, North Carolina.
Colton Welker
3B - Stoneman Douglas HS (FL)
Colton Welker’s impressive approach earned him
a slash line of .562/.638/1.104 through his first 16
games of his senior year. His actions are still a bit
choppy and indecisive, but his hands and feet work
well enough to give comfort that he can stay on the
infield.

The Boise club operated
as an independent team
from 1987-89, before
joining forces with the
California ( Anaheim )
Angels in 1990 to begin an
11 year run. During that
association, the team won
four league titles (1991,
1993, 1994, and 1995);
with manager Tom
Kotchman leading the
team to 501 wins in 835
games, by far the most in
NWL history.

NWL PLAYOFF PROCEDURES
FIRST HALF: June 17 - July 25
All positional rankings are based on winning percentage
In the event of a first-half tie:
1. Head to head record
2. Winning percentage within the division
3. Head to head average run differential
4. Total run differential average based on half
5. Coin flip
SECOND HALF: July 26 - September 5
All positional rankings are based on winning percentage
In the event of a second-half tie:
1. Head to head record in second half
2. Head to head for full season
3. Division record for second half
4. Head to head average run differential for the second half
5. Division record for full year
6. Won/loss full season
7. Total run differential average based on the full year
8. Coin flip
FIRST-HALF WINNERS WILL HAVE 7 DAYS (MONDAY, AUG 1) TO DECIDE IF THEY WOULD LIKE TO HOST GAME 1 OR GAMES 2 AND 3
If one team wins both the first and second half of the season, then the team with the next best winning percentage for
the entire season will get into the playoffs. If there is a tie for the next best winning percentage then the second-half
tiebreakers come into play.
Playoff procedures with regard to games affected by poor weather
1. During the Divisional Final Series: If Game 1 is rained out, then both teams will remain in the same city and play the
next day. Games 2 and 3 will be pushed back one day and extend the series so that it lands on the travel day. If the
Divisional Series is tied and there are no other days to play on prior the Championship Series, then the tiebreakers
will be as follows:
- Best overall season record
- Head to head season record
- Winning percentage within division for the season
- Head to head average run differential for the season
- Total run differential average based on the season
- Coin flip
2. During the Championship- Series: If Game 1 is rained, then both teams will remain in the city and play the next day.
3. During the Championship Series: If Game 3 is rained out then the series would be extended by one extra day. In
Three or four team tiebreakers
Clarification: Scheduled first-half games that cannot be made up in the first half are to be played in the second half
following normal NWL makeup game procedures. However, scheduled first-half games that are made up in the second
half will be counted toward second-half results, not first-half results.
Three or four team tiebreakers in the first half (Refer to first-half 2-team tiebreaker procedures once the
number of tied teams is reduced to 2)
1. The combined winning percentage of the tied teams when competing against each other in the first half. The
combined winning percentage for each team is the combined total number of games won against the other tied
teams divided by the total number of games played against those same teams.
2. The winning percentage against all teams within division for the first half
3. The average run differentials among the tied teams when competing against each other in the first half
4. If there are still teams tied, apply the 2 team first half tiebreaker procedures
Three or four team tiebreakers in the second half (Refer to second half 2 team tiebreaker procedures once the
number of tied teams is reduced to 2)
1. The combined winning percentage of the tied teams when competing against each other in the second half
2. The winning percentage within division for the second half
3. The winning percentage within division for the entire season
4. The overall winning percentage for the entire season
5. If there are still teams tied, apply the 2 team second half tiebreaker procedures
FIRST ROUND – IN NORTH AND SOUTH
Game 1: Wednesday, September 7
Game 2: Thursday, September 8
Game 3: Friday, September 9
Travel Day: Saturday, September 10

  • 20. NWL Award Winners HawksFacts June 18, 1975 Professional baseball returned to Boise after an 11 year hiatus in the form of the Boise A’s. In front of a crowd of 1,814, the A’s dropped the game 8-3 to the Portland Mavericks. But the bigger story of the day was base umpire Christine Wren who became the first female umpire in the Northwest League and, at the time, the only active female umpire in pro ball. At the advisement of home plate umpire Gary Lieberman, security surrounded Wren throughout the two hour and 37 minute ball game. 18
  • 22. 2016 Rockies Draft Picks ROUND 1 2 3 4 Lottery A PICK 4 45 81 110 38 Riley Pint RHP - Saint Thomas Aquinas HS (FL) Riley Pint’s biggest strength is his fastball. It’s not just about velocity though; even when he’s throwing it in the upper 90’s it has good movement. Pint has a good feel for a changeup that should continue to improve as he’s forced to throw it more. Robert Tyler RHP - University of Georgia (GA) Like Pint, Robert Tyler is known for his big fastball that has reached triple digits. Ranked as the 25th best prospect by MLB Pipeline, Tyler’s fastball has been graded as a 75 on a 20 to 80 scale. His secondary pitches need development. Ben Bowden LHP - Vanderbilt University (TN) Ben Bowden spent his first two years at Vanderbilt working out of the bullpen. A strong showing in the 2015 Cape Cod League helped him earn a spot in the Commodores rotation in 2016, but a lackluster string of starts sent him back to the bullpen as a closer. Garrett Hampson SS - California State University, Long Beach (CA) Garrett Hampson profiles better as a second baseman according to scouting reports, or he could be used as a utility man. Hampson played short, second, and third in summer 2015 for the USA Collegiate National Team in the Americas Baseball Festival in Cary, North Carolina. Colton Welker 3B - Stoneman Douglas HS (FL) Colton Welker’s impressive approach earned him a slash line of .562/.638/1.104 through his first 16 games of his senior year. His actions are still a bit choppy and indecisive, but his hands and feet work well enough to give comfort that he can stay on the infield. 20
