ARE ONLINE SOURCES CREDIBLE? PERSPECTIVES FROM PRE-SERVICE TEACHERSijejournal
Media literacy empowers students with the ability to think critically about the online tools they use on a
daily basis. It supports informed decisions about how they access and evaluate information located online.
Media literacy aims to achieve the challenge of stimulating the desire to explore, to equalize learning, and
develop critical thinking skills. In other words, it is possible to demonstrate how media literacy can be a
fundamental strategic instrument in classrooms, now more than ever.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Digitally Literate
1. Informationally literate means the ability to use technology correctly to find information
and apply that information. It helps teachers and students to investigate technology and learn
more. People are are informationally literate are able to determine the information needed,
access the needed information correctly, and incorporate the information they find into their
everyday learning.
Being informationally literate has a value. The value is being able to problem solve and
promotes thinking skills. This would promote those skills by asking questions and finding the
answers. It would also promote forming opinions because when you find out information,
usually everyone has an opinion about it. It would also help teachers because whatever
information you find, you can use it in class for debates. Students usually love to get into two
teams and debate against each other about different issues. This would also promote thinking
skills for the students as they go back and forth. However, it would also help them evaluate
sources. It could help them with determining if the source is credible or not.
However, as a student and a future teacher I need to know how to access, evaluate, and
use information in the 21st century. As a student I would need to know how to use these things
for typing up essays or even finding valuable and reliable information for my work. I need to be
able to know what websites are not trustworthy to access for my essays. I would not want to
read and learn information that are valuable. This would go along with evaluate. Once I find a
source, I would want to evaluate it as a student to make sure the information I want out of it is
correct. Also, as a teacher I would want to know how to access, evaluate, and use information
because you do not want to give your students the wrong information if your sources are not
reliable. In the 21st century mostly everything is on the computer. When you ask someone to
2. find information out, they go right to the internet. Anyone can post anything on the internet.
Therefore, you want to have the skills to know what source is trustworthy or not.
Also, the relevance of the topics plagiarism, copyright, and fair use to information
literacy is prevalent. When students or teachers find information that they want to use, they do
not want to plagiarize. When teachers are teaching their students and use information in their
power points or worksheets, you want to credit where you found the information. You never
want to take someone’s work. Also, copy and paste is easy to use and a lot of people use it when
they find information they want to use in their essays or projects. It is a problem that is
happening in today’s century because it is just a click away.
Lastly, in different ways technology has impacted the need for increased information
literacy. These ways would include different programs to help students who need more help in
reading comprehension. There is a lot of individual work on computers that can be done to help
students achieve in different areas, such as reading comprehension. Also, another way would be
researching information for a research paper or report. No one really uses the library anymore to
find their research. Therefore, they go to the computers to search the internet for that. Because
of that, technology has impacted the way students and teachers do their research. You need to be
able to know what sources to use and if they are reliable.
